Gawker commenters in general seem to be just as dumb and offensive as Reddit posters.

except for Fleshbot commenters, they're class acts

oh man, I had forgotten about the existence of fleshbot between say 2008 and now!

left just the tip

strange that music and porn were the two subject areas gawker couldn't make work in covering -- both media most beset by mass illegal file sharing, right?. i guess wonkette didn't succeed enough either, but the gawker main covers plenty of that beat itself.
kinda talking out my ass here
― goole, Thursday, 31 January 2013 22:30 (eleven years ago) link
i cant really speak to idolator, for fleshbot (and to some extent wonkette) the big issue was ad sales -- hard to sell ads around politics or porn. for fleshbot in particular, the only ads you can sell are porn ads, so its difficult to do strong independent journalism and still make a living, plus you cant sell inventory across the sites in your network. plus there was a point where gawker was doing some pretty good porn-industry journalism and i think it became clear that... whats the point of having the site if flagship is doing the journalism on its niche

I see where y'all think that mandatory tipping isnt dumb but it v clearly is.
― b'hurt's tauntin' (darraghmac), Thursday, 31 January 2013 22:53 (eleven years ago) link
it is dumb but that is how it works here, and shafting the server is not an appropriate response to its stupidity
― mookieproof, Thursday, 31 January 2013 22:57 (eleven years ago) link
its not mandatory, its automatic. its a small but distinct difference.
― ❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Thursday, 31 January 2013 23:00 (eleven years ago) link
I wouldnt stiff the waitress or anything, when in rome etc, but when i leave rome i reserve the right to say 'rome does shit dumb'

it's not the autotip that's dumb, it's the fact that servers are legally allowed to be paid below-poverty-level wages (just reiterating the obvious here)
― 1staethyr, Thursday, 31 January 2013 23:07 (eleven years ago) link
but if tips are mandatory u miss out on the karma boost
― flopson, Thursday, 31 January 2013 23:10 (eleven years ago) link
i love auto-gratuity because it makes it so easy to leave super-tip

I knew right after I posted that I couldn't have come up with a more Canadian joke, sigh. But I tip well at least.

I worked at headquarters for a buffet chain that re-classed many of their employees as "servers" so they could legally reduce their pay below minimum wage.
Can you imagine working a minimum wage job and getting the memo that your wage was being cut?
How did they make them servers? In addition to their standard tasks like restocking the buffet and cleaning tables, they were made to pour coffee, offer deserts, and do a few other server tasks, and had their wages cut for it.
A buffet chain! Have you ever seen someone tip at a buffet chain?
― © all the feelings (Austerity Ponies), Friday, 1 February 2013 14:59 (eleven years ago) link
yup; all of my older relatives who were on fixed incomes loved buffet chains (yours in particular) and would always tip 15% on their meals

― Jeff, Sunday, 21 April 2013 17:28 (eleven years ago) link
how much would you tip on an $18 cocktail. asking for a friend
― 乒乓, Friday, 7 June 2013 20:07 (eleven years ago) link
I think it depends on the context, like if it's $18 cause the place is ripping you off or if it's $18 because it's some crazy drink that involves lots of preparation
― iatee, Friday, 7 June 2013 20:10 (eleven years ago) link
I would never pay $18 for a cocktail.
I would run out of the place and never go back.
― waterface, Friday, 7 June 2013 20:10 (eleven years ago) link
I always tip $1 per drink if ordering at the bar. This is partially to encourage establishments to avoid having $18 drinks.
