Liked Patton Oswalt's tweet about the missed opportunity to play the Jaws music behind Ang Lee's acceptance speech.

Couldn't be bothered to stay up for this so missed all the fun. Not heavily invested in the results this year other than I really wanted Roger Deakins to finally win an award. I guess he must have pissed on someone's chips to miss out again.

buddy of mine from college wrote the Jimmy Kimmel "Movie about Movie" sketch -- there's a really funny scene with Wolf Blitzer at 3:30

That was probably the worst Academy Awards ceremony I've ever watched, and I sat through the Rob Lowe/Snow White one.

c'mon, Franco-Hathaway was worse.
Ted's Jew jokes went over well where I was watching.

Why wife thought he was Snuggy the Fabric Softener Bear and had no idea what the fuck was going on.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 25 February 2013 13:51 (eleven years ago) link
Franco-Hathoway was worse, yes. The issue with Macfarlane is that he's just so punchable. He needs to be sweeter and less smug to pull off innocently offensive. "Don't give a fuck while clearly giving a fuck" nagl.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 25 February 2013 13:52 (eleven years ago) link
I've mentally switched Boal and QT's respective wins. It's the only thing that makes any sense.

Franco/Hathaway was terrible but didn't rely on a bunch of misogynist jokes.

But he delivered them with a wink! He didn't mean it! He's such a gentle soul! He was channeling Frank Sinatra! Frank would have loved it! Women, can't live with 'em ... can't live without them!

sigh
dude loves old time hollywood and show tunes culture and all that but there's literally nothing he could ever do in his life to make his face appear grateful

I guess it wouldn't have been a misogynistic Oscars for the record books if the best actress winner didn't trip on her own dress.

Had to look it up myself but thanks anyways!

I want to know why this Rat Pack bullshit endures, but not, like, Elvis impersonations. Would have been 100% more awesome if MacFarlane, having made it and been given carte blanche, decided to cash in his chits by doing Elvis impersonations.

macfarlane won me over with the volley of jew jokes + sound of music joke. probably the best host i can remember, honestly

yeah i dunno i think making a joke sexualizing a 9 year old girl p much automatically puts a host in the bottom half
― This is called money bags. (zachlyon), Monday, 25 February 2013 15:57 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah, they were terrible by circumstance. Seth MF was terrible by design.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 February 2013 15:58 (eleven years ago) link
Seriously, scanning back, I totally forgot nearly 95% of past hosts had ever hosted, even in recent years. Whoopi? Ellen? Chris Rock? Alex Baldwin and Steve Martin? Sure, why not.

Most of the ones you mentioned sort of rolled back their presence once the ceremony got in full swing. Seth MacFarlane kept himself out there the entire night, ego trippin' like a motherfucker.

this sucked!
wtf shatner
wtf tribute to the great hollywood musicals of 11 years ago

I didn't hate MacFarlane like some of you did, some of his jokes hit the mark, but a few were unfunny in a cruel way. Mostly I felt like it was a total waste of an evening. I didn't have a rooting interest in a single category, and I didn't even watch more than 15 minutes--I sat in an adjacent room on the computer listening. Actually watching would have been less of a waste. I should have stuck with my initial idea of watching a movie instead.

― goole, Monday, 25 February 2013 16:11 (eleven years ago) link
Nearly every strategy Seth seemed to be attempting was done a zillion times better by Steve Martin.
― Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:12 (eleven years ago) link
Also, it's pretty brazen for the show's producers to spend a good solid 15 minutes' worth of broadcast time constructing an alternate narrative in which a movie they helped shepherd to screen (Chicago) revived movie musicals, and then positioning that development as the single most important thing to happen to movies in the last decade.
― Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:15 (eleven years ago) link
Off-topic about the hosting, but I didn't realize (or remember) Anne Hathaway got married...to a guy who, by all appearances, manages a comic book store.

i'm not a student of this stuff; do the oscars usually try so hard to work in the presence of movies that actually made money (avengers, bond) ?

chicago is literally a movie that doesn't exist outside of the oscars universe
has anyone actually seen it and if you have are you sure it wasn't a dream
