I want to know why this Rat Pack bullshit endures, but not, like, Elvis impersonations. Would have been 100% more awesome if MacFarlane, having made it and been given carte blanche, decided to cash in his chits by doing Elvis impersonations.

Most of the ones you mentioned sort of rolled back their presence once the ceremony got in full swing. Seth MacFarlane kept himself out there the entire night, ego trippin' like a motherfucker.

the real blunder of the night was whoever directed the show not cutting to enough celeb faces during the jokes. thats the only reason the jokes exist

I didn't hate MacFarlane like some of you did, some of his jokes hit the mark, but a few were unfunny in a cruel way. Mostly I felt like it was a total waste of an evening. I didn't have a rooting interest in a single category, and I didn't even watch more than 15 minutes--I sat in an adjacent room on the computer listening. Actually watching would have been less of a waste. I should have stuck with my initial idea of watching a movie instead.

during the opening monologue i was like 'when did the oscars become a roast' but i assume thats the gervais effect

Nearly every strategy Seth seemed to be attempting was done a zillion times better by Steve Martin.

Also, it's pretty brazen for the show's producers to spend a good solid 15 minutes' worth of broadcast time constructing an alternate narrative in which a movie they helped shepherd to screen (Chicago) revived movie musicals, and then positioning that development as the single most important thing to happen to movies in the last decade.

Off-topic about the hosting, but I didn't realize (or remember) Anne Hathaway got married...to a guy who, by all appearances, manages a comic book store.

Moulin Rouge came out a year prior to Chicago, but no one said a peep about it last night. I guess because, even though it's a musical, it didn't come over from Broadway?

Seth MF won me over when he flipped the Mel Gibson joke back on the audience, "oh, you're on his side now?". But then he lost me again with the Clooney/9 year-old thing.
