I guess it wouldn't have been a misogynistic Oscars for the record books if the best actress winner didn't trip on her own dress.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 25 February 2013 15:03 (twelve years ago)

When was the last time the top 6 awards were divided among 6 different films? (Oscar trivia nerd)

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Monday, 25 February 2013 15:12 (twelve years ago)

Unpopular opinion: Seth MF would be kind of adorbs if he wasn't That Guy.

xpost without looking it up, I'm inclined to say the last time Ang Lee won director

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 25 February 2013 15:14 (twelve years ago)

Had to look it up myself but thanks anyways!

Previous occasion was 1956.

I want to know why this Rat Pack bullshit endures, but not, like, Elvis impersonations. Would have been 100% more awesome if MacFarlane, having made it and been given carte blanche, decided to cash in his chits by doing Elvis impersonations.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 25 February 2013 15:51 (twelve years ago)

macfarlane won me over with the volley of jew jokes + sound of music joke. probably the best host i can remember, honestly

turds (Hungry4Ass), Monday, 25 February 2013 15:53 (twelve years ago)

He's def in the top five or so.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 25 February 2013 15:54 (twelve years ago)

Was pointed out to me that Seth MF looks like a lost Brady brother, and now I can't unsee that.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 February 2013 15:56 (twelve years ago)

OK, maybe top 30. I was amazed, looking it up, at all of the old Oscar hosts!

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 25 February 2013 15:56 (twelve years ago)

yeah i dunno i think making a joke sexualizing a 9 year old girl p much automatically puts a host in the bottom half

This is called money bags. (zachlyon), Monday, 25 February 2013 15:57 (twelve years ago)

Franco/Hathaway was terrible but didn't rely on a bunch of misogynist jokes.

Yeah, they were terrible by circumstance. Seth MF was terrible by design.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 February 2013 15:58 (twelve years ago)

Seriously, scanning back, I totally forgot nearly 95% of past hosts had ever hosted, even in recent years. Whoopi? Ellen? Chris Rock? Alex Baldwin and Steve Martin? Sure, why not.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 25 February 2013 15:59 (twelve years ago)

Alec

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 25 February 2013 16:00 (twelve years ago)

Most of the ones you mentioned sort of rolled back their presence once the ceremony got in full swing. Seth MacFarlane kept himself out there the entire night, ego trippin' like a motherfucker.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 February 2013 16:03 (twelve years ago)

this sucked!

wtf shatner

wtf tribute to the great hollywood musicals of 11 years ago

wtf bad jew jokes, plus the poor fucker who seth mcf dressed up as a nazi for one gag five minutes later

babs.

wtf michelle obama

goole, Monday, 25 February 2013 16:03 (twelve years ago)

the real blunder of the night was whoever directed the show not cutting to enough celeb faces during the jokes. thats the only reason the jokes exist

turds (Hungry4Ass), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:05 (twelve years ago)

JD & leong, do you also believe that the Haneke Twitter is the real one?

Pretty sure the AW one is real...

christmas candy bar (al leong), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:05 (twelve years ago)

that onion joke is funny

turds (Hungry4Ass), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:06 (twelve years ago)

leong, hahaha no

"This is like church, except there's more praying." Old Bob Hope lives!

Pope Rusty I (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:08 (twelve years ago)

I didn't hate MacFarlane like some of you did, some of his jokes hit the mark, but a few were unfunny in a cruel way. Mostly I felt like it was a total waste of an evening. I didn't have a rooting interest in a single category, and I didn't even watch more than 15 minutes--I sat in an adjacent room on the computer listening. Actually watching would have been less of a waste. I should have stuck with my initial idea of watching a movie instead.

clemenza, Monday, 25 February 2013 16:09 (twelve years ago)

during the opening monologue i was like 'when did the oscars become a roast' but i assume thats the gervais effect

turds (Hungry4Ass), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:11 (twelve years ago)

my only stake was that john williams lose, and he did.

i'm trying to remember whose speech i found most cringey but it was a crowded field

goole, Monday, 25 February 2013 16:11 (twelve years ago)

Nearly every strategy Seth seemed to be attempting was done a zillion times better by Steve Martin.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:12 (twelve years ago)

Also, it's pretty brazen for the show's producers to spend a good solid 15 minutes' worth of broadcast time constructing an alternate narrative in which a movie they helped shepherd to screen (Chicago) revived movie musicals, and then positioning that development as the single most important thing to happen to movies in the last decade.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:15 (twelve years ago)

Off-topic about the hosting, but I didn't realize (or remember) Anne Hathaway got married...to a guy who, by all appearances, manages a comic book store.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 February 2013 16:16 (twelve years ago)

xpost yeah it was like Oscars Tribute To Chicago was the theme for the show

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:16 (twelve years ago)

i'm not a student of this stuff; do the oscars usually try so hard to work in the presence of movies that actually made money (avengers, bond) ?

goole, Monday, 25 February 2013 16:16 (twelve years ago)

that onion joke is funny

ugh no how can anyone think this

lex pretend, Monday, 25 February 2013 16:17 (twelve years ago)

chicago is literally a movie that doesn't exist outside of the oscars universe

has anyone actually seen it and if you have are you sure it wasn't a dream

This is called money bags. (zachlyon), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:17 (twelve years ago)

That was the whole reason they reopened the best pic noms above five. Blockbusters still never win, though.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 February 2013 16:18 (twelve years ago)

I missed the Seth MF lyric that Onion tweet was apparently referencing.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:19 (twelve years ago)

Moulin Rouge came out a year prior to Chicago, but no one said a peep about it last night. I guess because, even though it's a musical, it didn't come over from Broadway?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 February 2013 16:20 (twelve years ago)

More like it didn't win any Oscars that, 10 years later, still demand an explanation.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:21 (twelve years ago)

because even they know that putting an elton john cover on stage and parading it around as the spirit of oscar is ridiculous?

This is called money bags. (zachlyon), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:22 (twelve years ago)

Seth MF won me over when he flipped the Mel Gibson joke back on the audience, "oh, you're on his side now?". But then he lost me again with the Clooney/9 year-old thing.

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:30 (twelve years ago)
