Franco/Hathaway was terrible but didn't rely on a bunch of misogynist jokes.
Yeah, they were terrible by circumstance. Seth MF was terrible by design.

Seriously, scanning back, I totally forgot nearly 95% of past hosts had ever hosted, even in recent years. Whoopi? Ellen? Chris Rock? Alex Baldwin and Steve Martin? Sure, why not.

Most of the ones you mentioned sort of rolled back their presence once the ceremony got in full swing. Seth MacFarlane kept himself out there the entire night, ego trippin' like a motherfucker.

the real blunder of the night was whoever directed the show not cutting to enough celeb faces during the jokes. thats the only reason the jokes exist

JD & leong, do you also believe that the Haneke Twitter is the real one?

I didn't hate MacFarlane like some of you did, some of his jokes hit the mark, but a few were unfunny in a cruel way. Mostly I felt like it was a total waste of an evening. I didn't have a rooting interest in a single category, and I didn't even watch more than 15 minutes--I sat in an adjacent room on the computer listening. Actually watching would have been less of a waste. I should have stuck with my initial idea of watching a movie instead.

during the opening monologue i was like 'when did the oscars become a roast' but i assume thats the gervais effect

Nearly every strategy Seth seemed to be attempting was done a zillion times better by Steve Martin.
― Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:12 (eleven years ago) link
Also, it's pretty brazen for the show's producers to spend a good solid 15 minutes' worth of broadcast time constructing an alternate narrative in which a movie they helped shepherd to screen (Chicago) revived movie musicals, and then positioning that development as the single most important thing to happen to movies in the last decade.
― Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 25 February 2013 16:15 (eleven years ago) link
Off-topic about the hosting, but I didn't realize (or remember) Anne Hathaway got married...to a guy who, by all appearances, manages a comic book store.

xpost yeah it was like Oscars Tribute To Chicago was the theme for the show

i'm not a student of this stuff; do the oscars usually try so hard to work in the presence of movies that actually made money (avengers, bond) ?

That was the whole reason they reopened the best pic noms above five. Blockbusters still never win, though.

Moulin Rouge came out a year prior to Chicago, but no one said a peep about it last night. I guess because, even though it's a musical, it didn't come over from Broadway?
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 February 2013 16:20 (eleven years ago) link
More like it didn't win any Oscars that, 10 years later, still demand an explanation.

because even they know that putting an elton john cover on stage and parading it around as the spirit of oscar is ridiculous?

Seth MF won me over when he flipped the Mel Gibson joke back on the audience, "oh, you're on his side now?". But then he lost me again with the Clooney/9 year-old thing.

Lots of people like Seth MacFarlane. Many other people like watching the Oscars. But nobody likes both, not even Seth MacFarlane, who has no idea what the Oscars are.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 25 February 2013 17:49 (eleven years ago) link
He sang a show tune about the hot nudity in The Accused – 30 seconds of Googling would have explained why that line wasn't a keeper, but obviously Seth's staff was too chickenshit to give the boss any bad news.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 25 February 2013 17:50 (eleven years ago) link

― Gukbe, Monday, 25 February 2013 17:51 (eleven years ago) link
Seth had some really foul jokes but I thought the production in general was really terrible, and often Seth was a bright spot by comparison. If someone could just rein him in he could be a very strong host. But I don't get the sense that he's able to go out of his comfort zone at all.

Was there no lifetime achievement award last night, or did I miss it? (Was that the Pennebaker segment? Usually they don't honor people together.) Also, doesn't last year's winning director usually present this year's, like with actors? They had Fonda and Douglas do that.

Doing a Twitter search, no one seemed to pick up on the Kardashian/beard joke as being about Kanye. Related to that, McFarlane seemed kind of uncomfortably and opaquely between dry loutish Kimmel wit and dry loutish Charles Nelson Reilly.
