The cast of "The Hobbit" should host, in character!!!!!

Was there no lifetime achievement award last night, or did I miss it? (Was that the Pennebaker segment? Usually they don't honor people together.) Also, doesn't last year's winning director usually present this year's, like with actors? They had Fonda and Douglas do that.

Doing a Twitter search, no one seemed to pick up on the Kardashian/beard joke as being about Kanye. Related to that, McFarlane seemed kind of uncomfortably and opaquely between dry loutish Kimmel wit and dry loutish Charles Nelson Reilly.

Doc Vig (Eazy), Monday, 25 February 2013 18:31 (eleven years ago) link

how is that about kanye?

This is called money bags. (zachlyon), Monday, 25 February 2013 18:32 (eleven years ago) link

They shifted all of the lifetime achievement stuff to the Governors Awards so that it isn't as rushed, right?

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 25 February 2013 18:33 (eleven years ago) link

I'd rather see that than a lame clip package of Bond scenes or performances from Chicago and Dreamgirls or the stupid loser song at the end.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 February 2013 18:35 (eleven years ago) link

I don't think anyone picked up on it because it wasn't a joke about Kanye?

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 25 February 2013 18:36 (eleven years ago) link

xpost (Well, OK, maybe it wasn't: Introducing bearded Ben, the Family Guy writer said: “The first time I saw all that dark facial hair I thought, “My God! The Kardashians have finally made the jump into film.”)

Doc Vig (Eazy), Monday, 25 February 2013 18:36 (eleven years ago) link

Terrible idea. Bergman and Kurosawa and Ray (or the Kazan controversy) has been the #1 reason to watch for a long time.

Yeah, and I guess that joke about the Oscar orgy at Jack Nicholson's place was supposed to be a joke about Roman Polanski?

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 25 February 2013 18:37 (eleven years ago) link

I thought it was just another dated Oscars joke, like the cocaine joke. Har har cocaine orgy '70s those were teh days...

James Morrison ‏@JamesPMorrison

@charlesmurray Yeah, if only self-confidence had anything whatsoever to do with talent or taste.

Yeah, James Morrison is a cool cat.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 February 2013 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

can't believe they did a tribute to Bond and didn't bother to get Connery, Moore, Dalton, Brosnan and Craig together to present an award. WTF.

akm, Monday, 25 February 2013 20:48 (eleven years ago) link

yeah thank god for Bassey

Pretty sure they were planning to get all the Bonds together, but the plan fell through when either Connery, Moore, or both dropped out.

Moodles, Monday, 25 February 2013 20:51 (eleven years ago) link

if you don't get connery, what's the point imo

christmas candy bar (al leong), Monday, 25 February 2013 20:52 (eleven years ago) link

would loved to have seen just dalton and lazenby up there

christmas candy bar (al leong), Monday, 25 February 2013 20:53 (eleven years ago) link

And a holographic Peter Sellers.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 February 2013 20:54 (eleven years ago) link

I'm pretty sure lazenby is dead

akm, Monday, 25 February 2013 20:55 (eleven years ago) link

oh I guess not. I thought he died last year, my bad. he should have been there.

akm, Monday, 25 February 2013 20:55 (eleven years ago) link

The best thing would have been Denise Richards just standing there alone onstage, waving to everyone.

Something I mentioned last night about the coveted death montage:

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/08/movies/awardsseason/even-the-oscar-memorial-list-is-a-focus-of-campaigning.html?_r=0

A friend on Facebook made the point that Donna Summer was left out, who, unlike Adam Yauch, actually won an Academy Award. (Not meant as a knock on Yauch, just that maybe last night wasn't the most sensible place to commemorate him. And yes, Knock on Yauch would make a great Dr. Seuss book.)

clemenza, Monday, 25 February 2013 22:48 (eleven years ago) link

Oscilloscope Labs has released over 40 films. I think Yauch deserves it just fine.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 25 February 2013 22:51 (eleven years ago) link

No Andy Griffith or Ben Gazzara!

Moodles, Monday, 25 February 2013 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

Excellent point--just looked over their credits, and they did Wendy & Lucy, the Cazale documentary, many more. Will point this out to my friend (who's more of a music guy). But I do agree Summer should have been there, having won one.

clemenza, Monday, 25 February 2013 22:56 (eleven years ago) link

If Griffith and Gazarra were omitted, that's bad too. A Face in the Crowd, all those Cassavetes films...I wouldn't think they'd require any lobbying at all.

clemenza, Monday, 25 February 2013 22:58 (eleven years ago) link

I think Donna Summer didn't actually win the award. She performed the song that won it, but the award went to the composer.

Moodles, Monday, 25 February 2013 23:03 (eleven years ago) link

Another good point. In the space of five posts I'm thinking, what the hell is my friend whining about?

clemenza, Monday, 25 February 2013 23:05 (eleven years ago) link

anne hathaway looks so bizarre on the cover of the newspaper today. her face is so humongous and alien-like.

scott seward, Monday, 25 February 2013 23:05 (eleven years ago) link

so my childhood friend billy was in charge of the tiger in life of pi. worked for two years on the tiger. that's what he won for last night. i didn't see the movie.

scott seward, Monday, 25 February 2013 23:07 (eleven years ago) link

The tiger was f'in rad, your pal did a good job

The tiger was some of the best FX I've ever seen. I've had people swear to me that it was real, despite all logic to the contrary.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 25 February 2013 23:18 (eleven years ago) link

I can understand that. It was fucking phenomenal, and heavy CGI is usually like sand in my eyes.

as usual, watched this 24 hour later with friends (annual ritual based on time zones)

ugh, this was the worst ceremony i have ever seen and i want to hire a hit squad on the smarmiest, least likeable, most misogynistic host ever. sadly can imagine Oscars finding us even worse options in future

H in Addis, Monday, 25 February 2013 23:26 (eleven years ago) link

he won an oscar for the lion witch wardrobe movie. i haven't seen him since high school. he was the brainy kid who was ALWAYS drawing. always. on the bus, in class, etc. very focused.
