Also, here's a good treat that provides a not-often-heard take on the show -- Jim Mallon, the show's producer and o' course the voice of Gypsy, who got interviewed by Rhino recently for its podcasts. Give it an ear!

three months pass...
So I finally have all the MST3K episodes (excluding the ultra-early KTMA ones that no one has), specials, and ephemera in handy-to-transport AVIs.

What do I win? Does Cthulhu open up a dimensional gate so I can proceed to Level Two?

Possibly my favorite ever song they did.

"JUST POUND THEM DOWN
YOU STUPID CLOWN
THEY'RE WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLLD."

(I know I quoted that up above but hurrah for a redo.)

the "creepy girl" song was always a favorite of mine.

"the second E is a grammatical thing, otherwise it would be Crepy Girl"

What are people's thoughts on Mike's Legend Films commentaries? I only have Carnival of Souls and it's decent, though nowhere near MST3K quality.

The idea they had to sell their services as an extra commentary track for regular DVDs was brilliant, sad that nobody's taken them up on it. Maybe they could do a Kevin Smith and just record commentaries for current movies then create a subscription download service?

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 16:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Destroy - Pearl, Bobo and Brain Guy. The movies and riffing on the later Sci Fi episodes were still pretty decent, but the interstitial shit is just tedious.

I'm still missing several of what DAP marks with a "T" and possibly and "S" or two. But I haven't been tearing my hairs out over it, admittedly.

Anyway, yes, I have been enjoying the Buddha nature for most of 2006, welcome to the club!

Ditto.

Like, what do I have to do?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 00:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Shorts. So many shorts. I think some of these are on Youtube as well, if you happen to prefer Youtube.

I love this series, but being in the UK I've only managed to see three full episodes(plus the movie, which was the only one which they've ever been allowed to show on normal tv) due to the frustration involved in trying to download 700meg files on capped broadband.

But I do love me some Mitchell.
"I'm King Hussain!"
"Did I tell you I'm Italian? Let me restate that!"

You hurt me in my heart.

eyeless in gazza (Phil A), Monday, 3 July 2006 18:07 (eighteen years ago) link

I finally rented Manos from Netflix, and I actually couldn't get through it. Not to knock the riffing, but the movie is just so freaking boring. I think I got through about five minutes of women rolling around in the dirt, before I turned it off. The shorts work much better for my attention span.

And yeah, trying to download these things over broadband was a big pain for me too. I gave up a while ago.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 3 July 2006 18:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Hahahahahahaha oh Manoshand.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 July 2006 18:21 (eighteen years ago) link

My favorite short has got to be the one about "a date with your family." Priceless.

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Monday, 3 July 2006 18:22 (eighteen years ago) link

"The Girl With The Golden Boots" still completely slays me.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 July 2006 18:32 (eighteen years ago) link

there's not enough red zone cuba love on this thread

Bea Arthur - Lost COmic GEnius ? (dubplatestyle), Monday, 3 July 2006 18:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Red Zone Cuba would be in my POX, if there were one, along with for sure:

Racket Girls
Mr. B Natural
Village of the Giants
The Creeping Terror
Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
Home Economics Story

hmm... I should come back to this one.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 3 July 2006 19:34 (eighteen years ago) link

POX (episodes):

Alien from LA
Manos
Zombie Nightmare
Catalina Caper
Puma Man
Rocketship X-M
Teenagers From Outer Space
Mitchell
The Starfighters
Angels' Revenge

Pretty much all the shorts after "Phantom Creeps" finally ended are totally classic. I'm going to give a special shout-out to the under-appreciated "Progress Island, U.S.A."

My appreciation for the Coleman Francis trilogy is a different type of beast entirely.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 3 July 2006 21:22 (eighteen years ago) link

In no real particular order:

The Incredible Melting Man
Alien from LA
Zombie Nightmare
Catalina Caper
Pod People
City Limits
Tormented
Village of the Giants
Jack Frost
Overdrawn at the Memory Bank

This is probably the most successful thread I've ever started. What does that tell you?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 01:15 (eighteen years ago) link

Space Mutiny is underrated.

GILLY'S BAGG'EAR VANCE OF COUPARI (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 01:21 (eighteen years ago) link

I'd take an MST3K thread over the flip out over/anticipate Arular thread, to be honest.

My ten:
Space Mutiny [xp!]
Wild World of Batwoman
Incredible Melting Man
Zombie Nightmare
Hobgoblins
Godzilla vs. Megalon
Overdrawn at the Memory Bank
Manos: the Hands of Fate
Puma Man
Master Ninja

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 01:26 (eighteen years ago) link

I remember "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank" as being a much better movie than Mike & the bots thought it was. Not that it was all that great of a movie, but it wasn't the "Monster A-Go-Go" trainwreck they seemed to think it was.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 01:38 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, it seemed mostly competent, if kinda lame. still, it made a good episode!

Puma Man and Space Mutiny are probably my favorite Sc-Fi Channel episodes.

Racket Girls is clearly the most underrated episode, judging the POXs so far. Seriously, the non-dud punchlines in that one just keep coming. It's relentless.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 21:23 (eighteen years ago) link

The problem is that I don't even remember that one.

Google google... Oh! The one with Michael Stipe. Yeah, that's a good 'un.

Here's Mike Nelson as "Jack Perkins", host of the Mystery Science Theater hour (when Comedy Central would split the re-run episodes during the week into two parts with the hosting segments tacked on):

Absolutely a killer episode. Monk is great.

Top Ten Underrated (no Mitchell or Manos, etc)
1. Warrior of the Lost World (megaweapon! liver face!)
2. Gamera vs. Guiron (hello/hello! zabriske point!)
3. Time Chasers (food court of the future! vermont!)
4. San Francisco Intl (windbreakers! davey!)
5. Riding With Death (mellow! abby!)
6. Girl In Lovers Lane (big stupid! heterosexual experiences!)
7. Tormented (sessions presents! beatnik!)
8. City on Fire (good morning! barry newman!)
9. Zombie Nightmare (tennis! canadian club!)
10. Fire Maidens from Outer Space (the secretary! more padding!)

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 18:02 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm still going with Rocketship X-M for "most underrated", since it was the episode that made me fall in love with the show, so many years ago. (Uh... fifteen years ago. I was watching the show beforehand, but I taped most of the first [1991] Turkey Day Marathon, and watched those episodes again and again and again.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 21:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Didn't they do a special in 1998 for the Academy Awards, too? (I was pregnant at the time and just really sick with the flu, but the riff of Captain Smith setting sail on Titanic sticks with me: "I'm gonna sink this bitch.")

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 21:49 (eighteen years ago) link

"Not since Fire Maidens in Outer Space has there been such a thrilling ladder scene."

i downloaded the 4th and 5th seasons and have been forcing everyone who comes to my apartment to watch them.

p@reene (Pareene), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 22:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Been Netflixing some of the episodes, and holy fuck I forgot how riotous the "Circus on Ice" short was.

-"Women are torn apart like fresh bread!"
-"It's Jules & Jim on ice!"
-"Spot the man in this chorus line."
-the entirety of the "fawn getting shot" sequence
-the best delivery/timing of the word "YES!" ever in a riff, via Joel

nate p. (natepatrin), Thursday, 6 July 2006 02:42 (eighteen years ago) link

4. San Francisco Intl (windbreakers! davey!)

Oh yeah, that's another POX choice.

I think Season 6 was pretty clearly the strongest, from a joke-writing standpoint.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 6 July 2006 05:06 (eighteen years ago) link

thank god this thread exists.

haven't read anything yet, but why was the show cancelled?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 6 July 2006 10:55 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm not sure why the Sci Fi network canceled them, but after 11 years I wasn't surprised. Disappointed, but not surprised. (Didn't Sci Fi pick them up after Comedy Central - or whatever it was then - dumped them?)
