Last big meal out was with 8+ diners and the place gave us really grudging service all night - insisting that we only had a two-hour 'slot' for our meal when that would end 30 minutes before the kitchen closed, then wasting a lot of that time by not returning for 15-20 minutes to take our drinks order. Because of the size of our group, there was no way we could adjust tip for attitude (big groups get a mandatory service charge) without involving the manager. It felt arbitrary because the host/person who booked it swears the restaurant failed to mention anything about meal timings when he arranged it.

the reason you tip is because waiters work shitty jobs (like a bunch of other people in different parts of the service industry) and are paid below the minimum wage, legally.
not in San Francisco. Minimum wage is $10.55/hr - tipped employees or not

― 乒乓, Thursday, 26 September 2013 20:12 (eleven years ago) link
I couldn't tell, it was a "keep the change" situation but dude counted out a specific amount of money (including coins), pushed it across the counter and was like "no, I'm all set" and then turned to his friend like "see, I got this tipping thing!"
I am pretty sure they then went to sit down before their food was ready.

That's the thing I didn't get; Burger King is in Switzerland, right? Surely it works the same way there as it does here?

i been to mcdonalds there, the concept is certainly the same there, except you pay p much restaurant prices.
maybe they just got confused

Just a case of "In America you tip at restaurants, in Europe you don't" I guess.

you don't have to tip on planes in the 1950s (was at a dinner party at the weekend and this was handed round for some reason and I thought of ilx)

well this has taken a strange turn - particularly how the restaurant claims they have the original receipt and comped a meal to ensure she was tipped, yet the Visa statement shows the 111.55 amount.

Awesome night out at Texas Roadhouse..got a great chest pump while eating there, I'll explain.I forgot I was wearing my tank top ( Ha ha jk, but not to show off ) and the girls working were begging to see me in action. I seriously refused until the whole right section of the roadhouse was cheering me on, so had no choice. They had 2 of these huge beer kegs in the back. I'm not an expert on weight but I can guarantee you they were at least 175 pounds, so 400 together. So I'm laying on the broiler and I repped out at least 16 deep presses, while the waitresses are feeling my calves haha gotta love it. I could tell the guy who was my server was pissed and can only imagine his anger when he checked my receipt. Just another night out as a wealthy bodybuilder.#NOTIPS #lightweight #noSPOTnoTIPS

Had to buy a new dishwasher this past weekend. It was delivered and installed today. The delivery arrived separately from the guy who actually hooked up the electrics and plumbing a few hours later. I only had a single $5 bill on hand because I'm a piece of shit. I ended up tipping the installer, because he did more work, but I'm thinking I should have tipped the delivery guys instead, because they probably have a lower base wage.
