I'm sorry I got involved in this discussion, actually--I just don't think it's particularly right that sometimes people come up with jackass requests about how they fucked up and get told to piss off. Sometimes, people come up with jackass requests about how they fucked up and people jump. It's not like it's a consistent "This person is favored" thing, it's like it depends entirely on who is reading at the time. Which seems like a shit way to do things--get on the same fucking page, yo.

That said I'm not sure there's a solution to what is definitely a problem. Maybe the moderators need to lez up more.

of course it depends on who's reading at the time, how the hell wd it not? the idea that some abstractly perfect rule can be formulated to deal with any possible situation that ever arises is insane — the discussion here has arisen bcz of different interps of a general rule of thumb abt what constitutes invasive personal information

(if not insane: go away and formulate the rule for us pls, so that everyone can interpret it perfectly conformistically in all situations forever)

yes of course this depends on non-general knowledge abt the various posters involved (ie i know and am very good friends with all THREE of the flatmates involved and know that in the past ed has requested that similar close-to-the-bone information be deleted)

i didn't actually think pete's initial post was out of order either in itself, i just think that the perfectly acceptable (if risky) discussion started had — essentially bcz of difft personal interps of the q. of invasivity — waddled itself across a line where [very mild] backtracking moderation was appropriate (not actually much more severe than writing h0rnby instead of hornby)
