Turns out imago is a lovely man who put up with my stream-of-blether about barth, accents, scott walker, daniel kitson, beer, daisies, gass, david thomson and paul anderson. V glad to meet meet ya L

Should warn everybody tho that I introduced him to elkin's famous defence of maximalism

My editor at Random House, Joe Fox, used to tell me, “Stanley, less is more.” He wanted to strike—oh, he had a marvelous eye for the “good” stuff—and that’s what he wanted to strike. I had to fight him tooth and nail in the better restaurants to maintain excess because I don’t believe that less is more. I believe that more is more. I believe that less is less, fat fat, thin thin and enough is enough. There’s a famous exchange between Fitzgerald and Thomas Wolfe in which Fitzgerald criticizes Wolfe for one of his novels. Fitzgerald tells him that Flaubert believed in the mot précis and that there are two kinds of writers—the putter-inners and the taker-outers. Wolfe, who probably was not as good a writer as Fitzgerald but evidently wrote a better letter, said, “Flaubert me no Flauberts. Shakespeare was a putter-inner, Melville was a putter-inner.”* I can’t remember who else was a putter-inner, but I’d rather be a putter-inner than a taker-outer.

so if he doubles down on his LJness u can all blame me ;-)

ban all pop music; stop watching television everyone, you're all thiiiiick

wins is a fine, fine fella & a magnificent conversationalist/drinking-slash-dining partner; also, he doesn't leave a mess but does leave presents in the shape of William Gass books, which on first glance appear very promising indeed. all in all thoroughly recommended as a houseguest.

& for my part I forced an episode of Xavier: Renegade Angel on him*, so you know who to blame when his wordplay finally attains a total synthesis of ego/id counterpoint

*that he'd already seen. obviously it's the best TV show

Sometimes Crabbits gets down on herself, and then I am mildly shocked that she doesn't understand what an amazing person she is. She always seems to me to be talented, thoughtful, funny, caring and kind. You'd be hard pressed to find a single ilxor who'd disagree with me on that.

oh no! must be the season of the rich (Aimless), Thursday, 13 November 2014 23:52 (ten years ago) link

Yo, crabbits is not only one of my all time favorite ilxors but one of my all time favorite people IN THE UNIVERSE; it makes me sad that so many ppl on earth will never get to hang out w her IRL

otm. Not a day goes by (unless it's a day I don't get around to looking at twitter) that I don't react positively to something that he tweeted.

clouds that is a great thread that i peak into once in a while, i've had both male & female partners in my life but i'm in a hetero relationship of 10 years or so and mostly identify as hetero and i don't wanna encroach you know. i don't know what the norms are re: that thread. no boys allowed is another great thread that i peak into but there is a strict no boys policy there.
