I have an organistational structure for CDs and books that is completely chaotic. Though I know where things should be. Herman Hesse is next to Voltaire which is turn next to You Are Worthless. In CDs The Beach Boys are next to Devo who are next to John Lee Hooker. Newly bought CDs are in various piles. My rooms a mess. There is alot of stuff in my wardrobe and under my bed as well.

I have two bookshelves, a tall one with books I've read and really loved and a short one with books I mostly haven't read. Both are full. Books from the short shelf migrate to the tall shelf, the public library, or Dad's shelves downstairs depending on how good they are; due to lack of space there is a constant rate of turnover. I really hate having things taking up space in my room; if it can't go in a drawer in the dresser or desk then it shouldn't be there at all, and I only hide things in the closet when I'm too lazy to throw them out or rearrange things and throw other things out. I make an exception for necessary items of furniture only.

I used to have all my records/tapes/CDs alphabetised until Laura ordered me to (a) de-alphabetise all of 'em 'cos it was sad; and (b) put "these old things" in the garage. I somehow don't think I'll pick up the habit again even without Laura to reprimand me! Everything's now completely mixed up, which is how I like it. Even more so with the imminent move (wherever that will be!).

I'm not sure if I'm really able to answer this question because it implies that cleaness/regularity/symmetry/simplicity &c are the only aesthetically pleasing forms of arrangement.

Some people may describe my record collection (and my whole room) as being messy, I consider it picturesque. I would say that, to me at least, it's aesthetically pleasing.

I build more shelves. I don;t think I could ever sell a book or a record. I don't even like giving things back to the library.

In high school I knew a girl who organized her books by the color of the spines and height. In hindsight her system seems so insanely particular that I could only wish to aspire to it.... My records have a semblance of being alphabetized, but on closer inspection the awful truth is revealed!

I use CDs as wallpaper, carpetting, shelves etc. Sometimes unintentionally. I like having them all randomly lying around as well, and putting the first thing I see in the stereo. Categorization = fear of making random connections

I do that with clothes because I only have so much rackage, but CDs? When it's so easy to pop to Muji and get another minimal perspex CD holder thing? No need! Like Ed, I don't think I'll ever be able to get rid of a CD or book.
