Looks from what I was reading earlier that what I was thinking about the bellybutton was right. After birth it no longer serves a purpose and people are already living with smooth indentations there for various medical reasons. Would be surprised if the level of scarring from most operations didn't drop heavily over the next couple of hundred years, if not sooner. So the idea of a navel would only be kept on for cultural reasons. Expectations of what made one human etc, if those haven't changed massively in the interim.
