Me too. I thought this was way less irritating than Radiolab though.

Radio lab cuts right through me, so so annoying.
― brimstead, Friday, 16 January 2015 23:51 (nine years ago) link
wow i was thinking invisibilia was local because its ad spots sound so low quality. i already hate it without hearing it. i hate the radiolab style so so much.

I actually got legitimately IA to an extreme about Serial, as you can read in the clusterfuck Serial thread
― walid foster dulles (man alive), Saturday, 17 January 2015 02:58 (nine years ago) link
I cannot really account for my anger about that show and its fanbase, or my hate-tinged obsession with it
― walid foster dulles (man alive), Saturday, 17 January 2015 02:59 (nine years ago) link
The first ep of Invisibilia didn't bug me too much but I totally get why it would be grating. I hate that call & response kind of editing they did sometimes, e.g., when talking about intrusive thoughts, one subject said "murder" then they cut to another saying "murder" then "arson," "arson" or what have you.

Truly irrational, but I hate it when I see patrons using the new drive-thru at Sonic.

At the grocery store yesterday there I was 2nd in line at the self check-out, even though there was an open counter available. I pointed it out to the person in front of me and they said "That's ok, these other people are almost done, I'm just waiting to use theirs." mjsbfsjkfb
Do you understand how lines work?
― ©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 18 January 2015 18:27 (nine years ago) link
When you're next in the line for check-out and the cashier closest to you logs out and fucks off, seemingly oblivious to a queue full of grumbling people.
― camp event (suzy), Sunday, 18 January 2015 18:38 (nine years ago) link
same IA that I post all the time: fking grocery store customers who just leave their cart in the middle of the aisle while they wander away to inspect cans of whatever RAAAAAAAGE
pull it to the side ffs
one day I'm just going to walk up & flip it over.
― difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 18 January 2015 19:19 (nine years ago) link
I hate this too, but I have also been a checkout chick and I remember how at first I felt too bad closing up on a line of people, and I'd always just keep serving people until the line was gone...and then I would only have like 5 minutes of my break left. After a while it was like grab that 'closed' sign and *BOOM* FUCK YOU ALL I AM ON LUUUUUUUUNCH. I would try not to be oblivious though. Oblivious was reserved for the million customers who tried to ask me for help on my WAY to the break room. I learned head down/eyes averted/completely deaf very quickly.
Also trolley rage is not irrational, VG. It is the only sane response to regular people being total assholes.

― Je55e, Sunday, 18 January 2015 20:52 (nine years ago) link
It happens about once in every four occasions in London. Yes, there are lunch schedules and breaks people have to factor in, but this is not the rational, reasonable thread, is it?
― camp event (suzy), Sunday, 18 January 2015 21:28 (nine years ago) link
Do you not use the box light system?
http://i.imgur.com/c6JxjSn.jpg
Where a cashier about to go on break would turn her/his aisle's light off and then serve only the customers who are still in the line at that moment?
― pplains, Sunday, 18 January 2015 22:39 (nine years ago) link
It's a Perfect system.
― Jeff, Sunday, 18 January 2015 22:50 (nine years ago) link

i also hate cashiers/servers/baristas carrying on conversations with each other while customers are being served, even if they are ringing you up while doing it.
i dont need my arse kissed but basic politeness would be appreciated while I am exchanging monies for yr goods

I worked at a very crappy, small supermarket with no 'this checkout is open' lights. We had the signs you put up and that was it.
VG, what about cashiers in small stores talking ON THE PHONE while they ring you up? Like, personal conversations. Encountered this everywhere in England, my IA was out of control.

What is rally parking?
(Google only presents areas to place your car before political or motorcycle gatherings.)
― pplains, Monday, 19 January 2015 01:51 (nine years ago) link
i worked for a union place where working through meals or breaks was not an option, and the company wouldn't have let me stay clocked in for any more time than they had agreed to pay me for. i was often told "go clock out and take lunch right now" by a shift lead even though there was a line full of people. so try not to blame cashiers when this happens; most of the time they're not doing it to be dicks.
― mitt fleekwood (get bent), Monday, 19 January 2015 02:10 (nine years ago) link
this is a management-level problem and probably a corporate-culture problem. and the unions, as imperfect as they are, are only protecting the employees by being so inflexible about things like breaks. those breaks matter.
― mitt fleekwood (get bent), Monday, 19 January 2015 02:15 (nine years ago) link
good cashiers in places with the light-up indicators turn them off reasonably early and then usher a quick last cart through if there's time before a break.
― valleys of your mind (mh), Monday, 19 January 2015 02:32 (nine years ago) link
In my America they also block the lane with a chain, a sign on a post, or at least a shopping cart.

paramedics & firefighters i know tend to habitually do this in case of quick getaway which is fine
but sitting in a parking lot waiting for some bozo to reverse his boat-sized pickup into a spot is enraging
90% of ppl that i encounter doing this are terrible drivers who suck at reversing & shd be murdered
everyone else, yr good

I saw I Australia angled parking spaces at the curb facing away from oncoming traffic to encourage this "rally" parking.
Also everyone had their rear view mirrors pulled toward them at a 45° angle which I couldn't understand either.
― pplains, Monday, 19 January 2015 05:17 (nine years ago) link
Never heard the phrase "rally parking" before this thread but when I visited a friend in Singapore he pointed out that 99% of the cars there are parked this way - something to do with orderliness or planning for the future or some other supposed shared cultural norm.
This friend had also lived in Thailand (where we were also going to visit) and told me to compare the parking there. When I got out of the Phuket airport and looked for a cab everything was just parked in a giant swarm with empty cars left in neutral so people could push them out of the way as needed. Our cabbie had to move a couple to get his car out.

my (corporate) workplace has an online driving class as part of our yearly junk, required if you drive for work at all. it strongly encourages backing in to parking spaces as backing out of parking is responsible for something like 90% of parking lot accidents
having been hit in a parking lot, seems to make sense to me
― valleys of your mind (mh), Monday, 19 January 2015 14:49 (nine years ago) link
also there are parking spots in my (north american!) city that are 45 degree angled like those pplains just mentioned. it's in an area that's been redone in the last decade, and yes, it's back-in parking
we're also getting a bizarre number of roundabouts/traffic circles now, with a bunch of idiots not really knowing how to use them. I have some anger for the people who refuse to acknowledge that different road patterns than they're used to might be ok
― valleys of your mind (mh), Monday, 19 January 2015 14:53 (nine years ago) link
Thing about "rally" parking is having to wait for the person in front of you (and perhaps the person in front of them) taking two or more tries at backing in just right, especially when most of these [North American] fuckers are driving huge-ass SUVs. Whereas, parking front-in allows the driver to do this sensible thing of waiting until traffic behind them is gone and then backing out.
Making "rally" parking mandatory to cover for the mistakes of the stupid penalizes the other 95-percent of the drivers out there.
I'm all for roundabouts though. They should replace every four-way stop with one of those. (There, that's three IA threads now where I've stated that.)
