It's like all those competing versions of the Drifters.

When Kevin and Frank re-team, it will be time to get excited all over again.

Eric H., Friday, 2 November 2007 15:45 (seventeen years ago) link

i duno. joel, trace and frank doing shit together is pretty damn exciting.

chaki, Friday, 2 November 2007 16:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Just watched Giant Leeches and Girl from Lovers Lane last night.

"...this isn't the answer."

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 November 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago) link

And then in the leech movie, dumpy overweight pig husband muttering under his breath to tightly-packed, pert-bosumed saucy cat wife wearing mini kimono: "Quit wearing my things."

Eric H., Friday, 2 November 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago) link

That is one grimy movie, that one.

"Here you go, Miss Shelby."

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 November 2007 17:11 (seventeen years ago) link

It's like everyone except my favorite Best Brains members Michael Nelson and Kevin Murphy are trying to do their own "The New Adventures Of Mystery Science Theater 3000". :(

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 November 2007 17:36 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah for awhile. we talked about mst3k a couple times. my bro was a much bigger fan of the show than i was (and i thought it was great) and when he visited town i introduced him to trace, who talked to him about the show for 30 minutes and gave him a signed dr clayton forrester photo.

New Crow has his moments, but it's the interstitial shit on the Sci Fi episodes that's really tedious.

Lolpez, Friday, 2 November 2007 17:39 (seventeen years ago) link

the interstitial stuff btwn Frank-Dr. F was occasionally better than the feature, tho.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 2 November 2007 17:41 (seventeen years ago) link

everybody stop saying "frank" without the "tv's" honorific

Neither of them made it to the Sci Fi channel though.

I was probably wrong to side with Fujiwara upthread. These days, I dig MST3K a little bit more than the entire concept of movies.

Rifftrax have enjoyably increased in consistency and quality over the last 10-15 episodes or so. Unfortunately initial Film Crew DVDs are near the very low end of MST3K episodes.

zaxxon25, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 12:42 (sixteen years ago) link

joel, trace and frank will always be the "real" mst3k for me.

skitwise definitely but I'll lose my shit during any era of the movies themselves.

these days I'll ffwd through any interlude that doesn't feature frank, sweet frank

da croupier, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:26 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, the actual movie parts never really lost teh funny.

anthony totally otm about frank

latebloomer, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm guessing any possibility of a DVD release of any of the classic episodes is pretty much nil, right?

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 18:05 (sixteen years ago) link

They've released like 10 boxsets of 4 classic episodes each so far.

The Yellow Kid, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 19:43 (sixteen years ago) link

I was gonna say! They've been chugging out regularly, but they're a total mix of what they have the rights to at any given time, and have covered everything from the first to the final season.

(Actually I'm kinda pissed with myself now, turns out they've pulled Volumes 9 and 10 -- I have nine but wasn't able to find ten, and now I know why!)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 19:49 (sixteen years ago) link

wait why?

chaki, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 19:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Gotta be something to do with the film rights. One of the Vol. 10 choices was Godzilla v. Megalon and I noticed some comment over on Amazon where a guy sez, "Wonder how they were able to get the rights to that one?" Perhaps Toho wasn't happy.

Prince of Space and Invasion of the Neptune Men were great

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 30 December 2007 04:35 (sixteen years ago) link

That photo is so weird. I guess I should have expected that Frank Conniff would pull a Terry Jones as he got older.

Picked up the Vol. 12 DVD set the other week -- worth it to finally have The Starfighters alone on DVD. "Bob Dornan, wild at heart."

Couple of the extra bits on the set were great -- for The Rebel Set they interviewed Don Sullivan, aka the 'sing-whenever-I-sing' guy from The Giant Gila Monster. Classy guy, one of those 'go to Hollywood to make it big' fellows (from Idaho! he escaped like Abbott did!) who never broke through but apparently had a great time in LA anyway. Good slice-of-life stories about his time as a young actor, how The Rebel Set came together, and how he didn't mind the MST take on it because as he says, "They took a dramatic film, and made it funny as well." Nice attitude!

For Parts: The Clonus Horror they interviewed Robert Fiveson, the director -- his stories were just as good, went over the whole stuck-with-no-budget origins of the production, how he initially cringed when he heard that MST wanted to do it but then thought, "Hey, wait, what's wrong with more attention?," enjoyed what they did with it and was especially gratified with the attention and support that a lot of MSTies gave him when the whole kerfluffle with The Island blew up a few years later.

Some of the trailers they provided as well were crazy. None for The Starfighters but one each for the rest, and each of them are priceless in cheesetastic ways.

Meantime! Some happy news I dug up about how the Vol. 10 DVD set had gone out of print before a lot of people could snag it due to a rights problem with Toho over a Godzilla inclusion -- the word is:

The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 10.2
Available February, 2008. Replacing Vol. 10 (which withdrawn due to rights issues involving episode 212- Godzilla vs. Megalon), this will contain the same titles, except that episode 212 will be replaced with episode 402- The Giant Gila Monster. The new disk will also feature a bit featuring Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu and J. Elvis Weinstein, in which they make sport of the rights screw-up. For those that managed to buy Vol. 10 before it was pulled, the Gila Monster DVD will also be sold as a single unit.

It's also the first time any of those three have done anything for the Rhino DVDs as a bonus appearance, and two-to-one it's going to be a Cinematic Titanic plug as well, why not? Anyway, glad this is happening because I missed getting my copy! (Vol. 9 is still unavailable due to rights problems as well, no word on that changing yet.)
