Yeah, I realised that 50c doesn't make sense. But I'd just read a Facebook post that was moaning about it being minus 2 and again not mentioning the scale. Annoys me, perhaps irrationally.
As does the ilb winter thread, so northern hemisphere-ist

i am so northern hemispherist that i didn't know that you guys actually call these months summer? do you? i thought you just had a hot winter

i guess that's stupid. maybe i didn't think that. i just never thought about it at all.
They eat seafood on Christmas Day and don't shoot fireworks for the Fourth of July. Southern Hemispherists are weird.

People who, in crowded public spaces, realize that they're walking in the direction opposite of the one they intend and thusly perform a quick 180 to rectify the problem. As with people who stop at the bottom of escalators and just outside of revolving doors, YOU CANNOT DO THIS. REMEMBER THAT THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE WHO AREN'T YOU.

I prefer it because you get more numbers.

Vapers. Just because it's allegedly safer and legal in public spaces doesn't mean you get to blow a fucking cloud in my face.

Whoever it is that owns HMV locally have just decided they don't want to keep paying the rent so have lined up somebody to take over the premises and are having a crash sale where all stock must go. I saw up to 70% discounts and all stock must go posters uup in the windows when I was just poping in there to browse for a few minutes.
Some of the staff in there have already been through the place closing rapidly a couple of years ago when it was in the premises facing its current location. So it must be very trying for them. Hope they can recover and get new jobs.
I'm assuming this is just something happening with the Galway premises. ON first seeing the posters i thought they might be repeating the events of a few years back and the firm folding nationwide.
Shame, we're running out of even semi decent places to buy music locally.
Other thing over here is the story that the government want to make An post into a bailiff service. So worried about reliability of getting things through mail order too. 2016 is already looking iffy.

Looks like this HMV thing is happening across this country. Grafton street closed today after it had been around all the time I've been in the country, with the possible exception of the months 3 or whatever years ago when the doors closed in all the Irish HMVs.I used to kill time in there in the early 90s leafing through the racks and finding obscurities taht hadn't got separate dividers.Found some great things there at the time. Wish I'd had the money and the time to9 go over there today and go through the racks.
Staff were told on Thursday that the shop in Galway was closing. Posters about the closing sale went up on Friday.A girl behind the counter in there today said that it was 3 years to the day since they suddenly had the doors closed. I'm not sure of that timing since i thought it was a different time of year but I assume she must know.
& the only other place in town that does sell cds first hand, and isn't just a section of a supermarket, was reducing the prominence of their cd section since Xmas.
Shame really I liked being able to physically sort through cd racks.

Kitchen prep anger: slicing tubes into discs and having stuff roll off on the floor constantly (carrots, scallions, zucchini). I have pretty good knife skills and could zip through the prep if physics would just quit getting in my way, but I have to slow down to keep stuff on the cutting board. If there's a trick to this, I haven't learned it yet.
― WilliamC, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 18:30 (eight years ago) link
tilt the board backwards? and put something clean underneath it to catch the escapees?
― koogs, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 18:44 (eight years ago) link
Is it possible to get a cutting board that is textured enough to keep things still without attracting dirt?
― Stevolende, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 18:45 (eight years ago) link
Fucking physics in general, always making shit fall and roll and slip and whatever the fuck stupid shit it thinks is a good idea for some reason.
(This morning's example: tried twice to roll my rolling office chair forward only to have the front wheel catch and tip the chair forward instead. You can't get that one thing right, physics, really?)

Solution: stop eating vegetables
― kinder, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 21:38 (eight years ago) link
A possible solution to9 the rolling off cuttingboard thing might be to have 3 of the four sides have a raised edge to them. Not sure fi that hinders movement otherwise. Or if anybody selss anything like that.
My cookery teacher has us putting a teatowel under the choppingboard to prevent that moving on the table service but that may be widespread practise anyway.
― Stevolende, Thursday, 28 January 2016 14:35 (eight years ago) link
I solve this problem by not chopping things into discs.
― ilxors ananimus (onimo), Friday, 29 January 2016 09:32 (eight years ago) link
You could try and cut everything square so it doesn't roll of course. But that might not help your culinary project.
