Buying a house not all it's cracked up to be imo but I'm a Millennial so what do I know.

i'm tired of worrying about how much my rent is gonna go up at any given time. after 2 years of no rent increase, our landlords suddenly jacked our rent by $300 at the start of this year, which was hugely painful to absorb into our budget. the area i live in is getting more and more sf tech ppl so the rents are increasing dramatically. i just want to buy a damn house and be done with it. i hate moving, so i'd like to find a city/area to live in and just stay there forever.

xps if my husband got a job that paid the same as his current one, we could def afford to buy a small house in portland, in a nice area (at the moment, anyway).

also, his "windowless closet for $360 a month" is a fucking bargain compared to sf - where someone was renting a truck - lined with plywood, and NOTHING ELSE, not even a damn parking space - for $800 a month.

well i mean as a lifelong portlander i can attest that, while rents might be really bad in the bay area, they've doubled or so in the last couple of years in portland. many people i know have been priced out of their neighborhoods, including myself. and it's mostly because of bay area tech money moving up here because it's cheaper. so i mean, that's been a huge issue for non-wealthy people in the pdx area. everyone you meet has basically moved here in the past few years.

although i might have to rethink moving to portland if it's full of sf tech ppl. that's what i'm trying to get away from.

start up culture is a really big deal here right now it's gross af

btw i'm not trying to dissuade you from moving up here! just trying to say that the tons of new blood flowing into the town has been actively detrimental to longterm residents, but i guess that's a tale as old as time

the other group of mass influx has been just-graduated 20-somethings who watch portlandia aspirationally, which is a whole other problem

Seeking good hiking trails not too far from town. We did the Wahkeena - Fairy - Weisendanger - Multnomah Falls hike in January and wouldn't mind doing that again but maybe switch it up elsewhere in the gorge? Thanks in advance!

Try browsing around in the Field Guide section of OregonHikers.org for a hike that appeals to you. btw, at this time of year the gorge is pretty crowded and by going a bit further afield you can hike at higher elevations that are too snowed under to hike most of the year. Mt St Helens has some very scenic hikes.

Yeah, I actually had that tab open and saw the Tunnel Falls hike which also looked nice.

We are short on time so were just looking for a quick escape from the city center, will probably end up in the Gorge. We don't mind getting an early start to battle the crowds and get back in time for our obligations. Thanks aimless!

Pretty good hiking to be had in town if y'all are really pressed for time, I dunno how far you've ventured into Forest Park but you may be surprised how beautiful and quiet it is only a couple miles down the Leif Erikson trail, and of course that runs for 10+ miles, with miles more of smaller trails spider-webbing off and around it.

And all without having to leave the city at all! Forest Park is the best thing Portland has going imo.

If you do go to the gorge I really like Elowah Falls, easy hike, beautiful falls you can get plenty close to, and there are other falls nearby you can chain together for a longer/harder hike, you can even climb to the top of Munra Point if you're in the mood for punishment. View from the peak is well worth it though!

De nada, let us all know what y'all ended up walking, always interested to hear about a local hike, Lord knows there are too many trails for anyone in particular to be familiar with.

Plenty of places in the world, in the country even, where there ain't any good hiking unless you're ready for a proper roadtrip, I feel this is an overlooked perk of Portland even now, when hiking seems as popular as ever. Good for us though, huh?

Timely right about now with this Pokemon Go blowing up all of a sudden..

Seems like the two major draws (beyond pocket monsters) are the social aspect, and that it makes you get up and walk around. And I feel like, well hell, if you like walking around...have you been to the Gorge?

From what I've gathered there probably aren't many Pokemon in the Gorge, but there may be an opportunity here...where's that thread where we give away good ideas...

Trip report: Woke up early (5:30am) on Saturday and hit the trails around Bridal Veil, Wahkeena, Multnomah & Horsetail Falls and back to NE Alberta for Pine State Biscuits before the line was nuts.

Sunday we woke up early for a shorter excursion and headed due east to Hillside and improvised on the network of trails heading south, connecting to the arboretum, Japanese garden & the zoo. We still had some energy so we connected to the "Four T" trail which was a mix of urban and offroad trails but once we got to OHSU we realized we wouldn't be able to take the tram down til 1pm so we just hopped on a bus down the hill back downtown.

Thanks again for the tips, if we ever get a chance to add in a few more days we will try to get out to the surrounding mountains.

Only worth it if you own or can access a car though (and you might find yourself wanting 4WD at that).

I never actually owned the NW one (lived in Eugene), but I'm sure it's good. Always nice to take a phone photo of his map before setting out

Love the arboretum, such a good idea. Does every city have a living tree museum? I suspect not, but they really ought to. Had never heard of the "4T" trail, sounds like a good excuse to finally try out that tram thing. Are the off-road portions nice?

Can vouch for the Sullivan books, I only have the NW one but it is an excellent resource, probably the best I've found in old timey paper form anyway

Yeah. We get a cold, snowy, icy winter around here from time to time. It's rare, but I've seen worse. Much worse. That said, I'll be damned glad when all the snow and ice are a dim memory. At least none of our trees has fallen over and we've had electricity every day.

it's usually ~ once every three years. this is our fourth or fifth episode in the past six weeks. and it prob won't be v clear until late in the weekend. not v good stuff imo.

boy 100 miles makes a big difference right now, streets are almost clear in Eugene but we are slated for more snow tonight in the 1-2" range

last weekend was rough, finally got out of the house to buy food on Sunday and it was still pretty sketchy

Every time I've visited Portland in the winter it's been rainy and grey but not cold; last week felt really strange by comparison because it never rained once and was shockingly cold and windy. Plus I saw Hood and St. Helens a couple of times which felt really strange in January.

just had to dig my car out enough to back it away from a tree who's neighbor in the plot completely uprooted. Missed me but took out a jeep.

We got roughly 8 inches here last night. Woke up this a.m. with electricity intact (hurray!), but our internet (via cable) was out until 20 minutes ago. I shoveled a couple of tons of wet snow for 3 hours this afternoon, but the temp was (a bit) above freezing and no wind, so not too bad.

The issue is how the images and action are being shared and applauded by white folx in a way to center whiteness, white feminism and the martyrdom of white women. Those folx seem to be reading the person as a white woman, calling her “Athena” and “Lady Godiva” and hash tagging ‘pussypower.’ That is the problematic behavior I am trying to discuss. The shift of the focus from Black folx to white women or NBPOC women and the lack of open understanding about the privileges at work. The second image was shared in one of the BIPOC groups I’m in online. I believe it’s a response to the first image (and others like it) posted by white women."
