Birch Barlow: Mayor Quimby, you are well known for your lenient stance on crime, but suppose for a second that your house was ransacked by thugs, your family was tied up in the basement with socks in their mouths, you try to open the door but there's too much blood on the knob....
Mayor Quimby: What is your, ah, question?
Birch Barlow: My question is about the budget, sir.

It weirds me out because I'm all set to pay for my own drink, then I have to re-evaluate the situation. Am I expected to participate in this too? Is the person in front of me a stalker or something? Is there someone behind me now? Did they order a coffee or a dozen donuts? Am I on candid camera?
There was no one behind me to pay it forward to, thank god, so I tipped the counter dudes and got the hell out of there.

it's nice that some of the money is going to charity, but it's impossible not to see this as a calculated marketing strategy to turn a profit under the guise of "random" acts of kindness, barf.

i think generally pay it forward is kinda nice, but it can for sure throw you off kilter
i am suspicious of people who do it habitually though. one of the managers in our office is a habitual pay-it-forward-er & loves to faux-humbly drop it into conversation etc & basically thinks he's got a box seat in heaven bcz of his Good Deeds. i take a very dim view of his charity in general because i know that he wants the world to know about it AND hopes that we're keeping score

It's like that thing in Australia that McDonalds does--don't know if it's universal--where they get celebrities in to flog burgers for a day, and give $1 from each of a certain kind of burger sold to a charity. Nothing is ever said about all the extra $$ they must make from people wanting to buy shitburgers from faded singers etc

if it's a competition then fuck it, get nothing & like it because i sure as hell dont like you enough to write you a bloody letter

echoing a post from upthread, i'm trying to figure out a blu-ray edition to get but every edition of a movie has the same reviews, with few exceptions. so there's a blu-ray from 2015 and on the page there are reviews from 2001 crowing about how glad the reviewer is that the DVD isn't a pan and scan that you have to flip over halfway through.

wow that's a load of horseshit. I would be seriously irritated if every fucking friend of mine called me on my birthday - i'd be on the phone for hours. my bestie and family, ok...but beyond that, leave me some me time! I love my FB love on my b'day, and besides I usually see my friends at a pub later that night anyway where they can tell me in person.
― Neanderthal, Sunday, 19 June 2016 21:23 (eight years ago) link
and then if you wrote a letter she would say "I'm so sad nobody wished me happy birthday" when all the letters arrived weeks late
Yes! I was trying to buy a DVD of a German film, preferably in German with a choice of English or German subtitles for German-practising possibilities, but good luck working out which version comes with what when all the reviews have been merged
and yes, recipe sites where you have to scroll past a billion photos just to get to the recipe, and they all have so many ads on that my laptop almost catches fire and it takes 30 seconds just to respond to page down or w/e. bonus rage points if you finally get to the recipe and the main ingredient is a brand-name sauce that you can't buy in whichever country you're in anyway
― a passing spacecadet, Sunday, 19 June 2016 21:24 (eight years ago) link
is there any website specifically dedicated to reviewing/cataloging the different versions of DVDs/Blu-rays and what they contain? I used to have the same issue above.

Okay now I agree with the anger there, but you know that in the frankly medieval version of friendship that she endorses, you would be expected to remember weeks in advance and write the letter then.
xp I'm amazed that I can't find anyone ranting on the IA threads about American Recipes and 'cups'.

I know I've come across a website called the cook's thesaurus that had possible substitutes for ingredients a cook might be missing. i.e. alternatives to using butter and other forms of fat or if you can't get a certain type of bean or whatever. Not sure if they went into things like proprietary brands' sauces but would think that if they didn't, somewhere online might.

Does the UK have a different cup value?
― how's life, Monday, 20 June 2016 10:19 (eight years ago) link
Weight not volume!
― Andrew Farrell, Monday, 20 June 2016 10:27 (eight years ago) link
I mean also yes, its difficult to find measuring jugs or whatever that have US cups as a measure, but it's also not how things are sold. Are things like flour or cheese actually sold by volume in the US?
― Andrew Farrell, Monday, 20 June 2016 10:31 (eight years ago) link
xp We did have a slightly different cup value but now we just use ml. Probably most people under 60 don't know what a cup is, unless they regularly try to follow American recipes or old cookbooks. (OK, maybe it's not that bad, since as an only very occasional recipe-follower I have a vague idea that it's somewhere in the 200-250ml range, which tbh is probably precise enough for me)
The ones which get me are the different verbs for things, e.g. sautéing for pan-frying, broiling vs grilling. I've probably complained about being confused by them on ILX before and there was probably a giant shitstorm of "omg British people are wrong about all these perfectly self-explanatory things and shouldn't be allowed near any cooking equipment" so let's not do that again.
un-xp ah yes, good point, a "cup" of a solid or powdery substance is confusing, esp if you're trying to buy the required ingredients
