So far I am noticing that early twitter use feels oddly like work, where you feel this need to do things to get followers and increase your reach.

― goole, Monday, 19 September 2016 20:24 (nine years ago)
I think all the handful of times I used hashtags so far were either ironic or in response to a specific thing (i.e dumb games where you're supposed to come up with a pun) except maybe one

so like twitter is a battery hog and it's not just my phone dying on me right?
― the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 16:40 (nine years ago)
by "twitter" do we mean their official client or
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh π), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 17:23 (nine years ago)
like tweetbot usually is 20-30% of my total battery usage, but it's because I'm sitting there scrolling through tweets, loading tweets, loading images, and pulling the little refresh thing all the time
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh π), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 17:24 (nine years ago)
^^ I've got autorefresh on.
Thing about tweetbot that does annoy me: it's always last to catch up with new features. Gif implementation took ages, and now that the 140 limit excludes links and pics it redirects me to web Twitter because it can't cope.

― dr. mercurio arboria (mh π), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 17:39 (nine years ago)
Didn't realize but you are right, was using tweetbot on (old) ipad
― the tightening is plateauing (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 17:45 (nine years ago)
i never could get with tweetbot's gestures. they felt different just for the sake of it. they still don't do polls, right? conversation threading has always been pretty awful. it was ALLLmost worth it for the syncing with desktop and the lack of ads but i just couldn't hang.
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 19:46 (nine years ago)
they don't do polls b/c twitter doesn't provide an API hook for polls, because twitter is trying to kill the lingering 3p clients like tweetbot without outright killing them

search is also vaguely crippled for 3ps, i forget how exactly. dont think they gave much heads up for the longer tweets either
normally have fenix on android but i'm using the official client until the latter issue is sorted - it's a lot better than it was but two clicks to get to a list and then a massive uneccessary nav bar permanently taking up the top quarter of the screen is infuriating

A few observations from my brief twitsperiment so far:
1) the only way to pick up followers in the beginning seems to be to reply to posters with more followers with retweetable posts. I have landed this trick twice and have a mere 22 followers. 2) but doing this takes an outsized amount of time and effort - finding the right joke right place right time right person combo. 3)I'm sure there's a point where growth could start to speed up exponentially, but only if you're really good at retweetable jokes 4) it seems really exhausting to get to even get to escape velocity 5) beyond the game of followers, it's sort of an annoying format, not that conducive to conversation compared to Facebook of even ilx, harder to read6) the majority of people who do have a lot of followers either have some separate minor notability (journalists, comics etc) or are just really long time users7) for the professionals, the tweets are really partly work and self promotion so there's much more incentive to put in the work 8) one thing I do think it could be really useful is for following specialized or obscure topics, like stuff beyond the same slate and salon pieces everyone already shares on Facebook

#1 I mean you cleverly reply to someone popular, they throw you a retweet; a few of their followers also retweet and this leads to a few new followers for you.
― the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Friday, 23 September 2016 00:09 (nine years ago)

I'm pretty bad at twitter and you can count the number of non-ilx non-irl non-bot followers i have on two hands but i still have a good time on it idk. for me the purest narcissistic frisson isn't the one you get from making a good joke and getting a lot of RTs but when an account ur twitter crushing on follows u back
― flopson, Friday, 23 September 2016 00:37 (nine years ago)
