in the Rolling Metal thread, when GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ makes a recommendation, I always know it's gonna be killer

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 01:32 (seven years ago) link

I'm not on that thread but agree that he is a quality poster.

Trying to remember his old screen name , The Something of Gene. The Story of Gene? Bring Me The Head of Gene? It was an album title, as it turned out.

Also Yr Null Fame, back in the day? Have always enjoyed his posts.

el sabor de gene - good guy from the olden days of the DroneOn mailing list

DroneOn, wow haven't thought about that in a long time. Were they the ones with the Sound Of Confusion FTP? Received a massive education in psych/drone rock from them back in the day.

I feel like most threads this has turned into a hey you got taste ilmer.
But I'm going to give a straight shout out to my girl and fellow expat Sharon Penny for consistently making me LOL

I respect their children. Their children are incredibly able and devoted, and I think that says a lot about ILXors. I don’t agree with nearly anything else ILXors say or do, but I do respect that.

Nah... SoC FTP was a different person - never knew who that was. Have always wondered what happened to folks in the great mailing lists diaspora.

BTW, DroneOn is still in stasis at: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/droneon

upper mississippi shakedown is the best - frequently otm, very thoughtful & reflective poster, good-humored and has good music taste

marcos, Friday, 21 October 2016 19:35 (seven years ago) link

awww DroneOn

I miss the late 90s mailing list era: DroneOn, hyperreal lists (idm, 313, ambient), pure-impure...

Also I love all of you, obv.

a passing spacecadet, Friday, 21 October 2016 19:56 (seven years ago) link

btw I think I only ever lurked on any of the above except for maybe 2 not very interesting posts on one of them so no, you don't remember me from those days, but if you posted to or even just read those lists then hi, missed you, hope you're doing ok

Ha, was resisting urge to post that as it seemed to have died a quick death.

one month passes...

I've been loving the hell out of a recharged k3vin k in the political threads.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 11 December 2016 21:08 (seven years ago) link

I've loved reading both k3vin and your own posts (missed your good mornings! when you didn't post them!).

Also, ShariVari. Would love to pick his brain over some borscht some day.

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 11 December 2016 21:18 (seven years ago) link

Might not sound like a compliment but for me Alfred is the least predictable regular poster in terms of opinions.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 11 December 2016 23:16 (seven years ago) link

lol

how so?

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 11 December 2016 23:18 (seven years ago) link

In this forum since we don't have avatars it takes me longer to assemble an idea of who each poster is and what they're like. There are lots of posters I still get mixed up. Most of those "(name) in (place)" posters are just jumbled together for me.
I've seen a lot of your opinions on films and music but I still haven't figured out what your favourite types of things are or what you're likely to say.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 11 December 2016 23:41 (seven years ago) link

Most of those "(name) in (place)" posters are just jumbled together for me

i mean, youd think these two pieces of info would actually help?

loudmouth darraghmac ween (darraghmac), Sunday, 11 December 2016 23:42 (seven years ago) link

i dunno man there seems to be an inordinate number of people living in alex

Our Sweet Fredrest (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 11 December 2016 23:44 (seven years ago) link

soto will like good film and bad music ;)

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Sunday, 11 December 2016 23:44 (seven years ago) link

Jim In Vancouver is easier for me to remember than the Alex and Josh posters.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 11 December 2016 23:45 (seven years ago) link

oh this is the nice things thread

soto is a voice of clarity on popular culture threads and his film criticism is up there with anyone on ilx's

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Sunday, 11 December 2016 23:46 (seven years ago) link

changing my name to "darragh in usa" but it'll take a few weeks for the local court to approve my new nomenclature

mh 😏, Monday, 12 December 2016 00:02 (seven years ago) link

his film criticism is up there with anyone on ilx's

what is this golf clap nonsense, try again

El Tomboto, Monday, 12 December 2016 00:03 (seven years ago) link

yeah that was almost damning with faint praise
alfred can and does write professional film criticism and does so independently here without compensation

mh 😏, Monday, 12 December 2016 00:06 (seven years ago) link

i liked "up there with anyone on ilx's", i felt briefly included as a player

mark s, Monday, 12 December 2016 00:09 (seven years ago) link

i guess that's my "say something nice abt imago" :D

mark s, Monday, 12 December 2016 00:10 (seven years ago) link

lol now there's a golf clap :P

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Monday, 12 December 2016 00:30 (seven years ago) link

soto's film criticism perhaps falls short of jonathan rosenbaum's but i would trust his opinion over more or less any other film writer on earth

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Monday, 12 December 2016 00:35 (seven years ago) link

that do

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Monday, 12 December 2016 00:35 (seven years ago) link

honestly, both of the prominent "al"s on here are very good writers, i just don't always agree with some dude
i may be forgetting other als

I met Mr. Soto, once ca. '07. I was at the lowest point in my life emotionally, creatively, and career-wise, and he was a total gentleman and a kindly conversation even though I was an incoherent mess.
