lol I have a couple friends who think I have an active, exciting social life because I've been busy a couple times they've invited me over, but a couple of those times I had a cold or was feeling antisocial.

yeah, and sometimes I do have those moments where I don't feel like being out and about, but usually it was more "I have tickets to see Guns 'n Roses, and you want to go to some shitty bar".

1) (And maybe I've mentioned this before), 98% of laundry instructions say either "tumble dry low" or "lay flat to dry" or "line dry only." The other 2% that says "tumble dry medium"? Fuck you!
2) People who mindlessly forward videos of purported animal cruelty on Facebook, churning your stomach and making you upset ... until you look for more details and realize that vital information has been left out. Like, the other week there was a video pushed my way that showed animals let out of a barn, frolicking in the grass, and the tag was that they had supposedly been cooped up for months and months with no air and grass and sky and this was their first taste of freedom, when in fact it was old footage of happy, healthy cows that had been housed and cared for inside for the winter, for their safety, and this was just their annual seasonal release back into the pasture to graze. Then this morning I get one (and it's a sad video) of a cow in full view of its dead calf, the mother suspended in a strange harness and then dragged across the ground by a tractor. Horrible, right? And it is. Except apparently those cow harnesses are used when a cow collapses and refuses to or can't stand. This cow had just given birth - no idea how or why the calf was dead - and its back legs gave out, so it had to be moved or it would have either died or been put down. Yeah it looked bad, but how else are you going to move a 1000 pound immobile cow? There's no context provided at all, no news of the cow's fate or why what was done was done, just the shocking video of this cow being dragged. And yeah, maybe it was abuse, but maybe (or likely) it wasn't, so don't shove it in my face and accept what you see is the whole story. It would be like not knowing anything about humans or medicine then forwarding video of a sleeping pregnant woman whose screaming baby was being surgically cut out of her stomach. Shocking!!!

dunno where else to vent this, but as tech makes people so connected and info so readily available, I now find myself having to do little troubleshoots ALL THE TIME, e.g. this morning I had bluetooth problems, just now I ahd to figure out why my phone wasn't notifying me of new texts, it just something all the time

Firefox on android asks me if i want to subscribe to their newsletter every time i start it, which is every time i look at anything on the web.
worse, often it doesn't display the message until i either cancel the keyboard or until i click on one of the tiles on my home page, when it displays the message for a split second before heading off to the selected page.

on android lollipop there is this app/feature "my magazine" which is completely worthless, but it has its own clickable icon on the start screen which is easy to accidentally push... anyway I figure out how to kind of hide it, even though you can't actually delete it. BUT, it came back again a couple of weeks ago, and I forgot how I hid it the first time, so I have to regoogle the whole issue.
since when can we not modify, to our exact liking, products we've paid for in full?

Watching cylindrical objects roll on supermarket conveyor belts cos people don't realise they stay still if you put them lengthwise. So wine will be shaken up as will beer.
― Stevolende, Sunday, 20 November 2016 00:59 (seven years ago) link
That is watching drinks bottles and cans rock back and forth on a conveyor belt since they're moving in time with the motion of the belt. I don't drink much wine but did thik that you weren't supposed to shake the bottle up and cans may just froth massivel if opened post shaking.Lay them lengthwise and they stay on the one spot since they're not rolling back and forth with the rhythm.
― Stevolende, Sunday, 20 November 2016 12:32 (seven years ago) link
tbh the wine you buy that gets paid for via conyevor belt is not much affected by a bit of rolling, it's not like yr disturbing the crust in 100-yr-old port

Travellers came back after being evicted from their squat park up once. Council had put some large concrete blocks on the access ramp the travellers had used as access.I think the ramp is for disabled/pram access from the square I live on into the park. When the travellers came back the first time they dragged the blocks out of the way. Presumably with ropes attached to a vehicle. Blocks lay on their sides in the path for weeks until the council could evict the travellers again. After that the council put about 100 of these blocks at about €400 each down the length of the path and at various other points around the park. These things aren't exactly aesthetically pleasing. So parts of the park are a bit of an eyesore. They also don't work. Last Friday the travellers returned and dragged blocks out of the way again. Council has now evicted again. Now they've placed sets of 6ft blocks in some strategic places. These include totally blocking that access ramp.Surely there has to be some way of blocking incorrect vehicle access that doesn't block disabled/pram access and doesn't look ugly.
― Stevolende, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 08:08 (seven years ago) link
I'm assuming that original blocks are building blocks so about 3 foot long, 2 foot tall roughly. & possibly they were what the council had at hand and thought might have some effect. They've now been shown not to.& the idea that the park is going to have these items dotted around it permanently is a bit of a drag.
Local paper was complaining about the park being a bit of a state before they were introduced.

The whole thing where people rake leaves and grass clippings and pay to have someone take them away, then pay to have someone else bring them huge piles of mulch, which they then spread in their gardens? Or they SUVify down to Home Despot and buy big-ass plastic bags of soil, mulch, humus, compost, etc. It doesn't make me angry, just seems prissy and creates busywork.
You could jut let things take care of themselves, like they did successfully for billions of years before you arrived. Or, if you're into stewardship, mow the leaves and grass together and you have efficient mulch. Or if you're so inclined, compost it all and now you have dirt.

i'm glad my new community isn't gated. the one at my old community was infuriating. I think I mentioned before, but they only let one resident per house put a number in the box, so if he wasn't home when you dialed the gate code - tough, they had to tailgate.
the weirdest incident was a few weeks ago, my last few nights in the old place, it's late at night and this dude who looks to be in a mondo hurry pulls into the community behind me. he goes to the call box, I go to the resident scan, and scan my card, right around the time that he presumably gets buzzed in by his friend.
I go in first and he follows up behind me, then he passes me at 30 or so mph in the oncoming lane (speed limit in the community is like 10 as it's winding). he zips through the community, and then stops next to the security guard, who is parked on the other side, preventing me from getting by. he chats with him, then leaves, and then I start to go and the security guard shouts WHOA, where are you going? do you live here? I'm like "yeah", and then he asks "why didn't you scan your card" and I said "I did!" and he was like "well that guy just told me you tailgated him in" and I'm like...."no, if anything he might have tailgated me in, he came in behind me then passed me at a fast speed" and he was all like "oh I'll go follow him then".
uhhh....so yeah, fuck gates. hasn't stopped the community from having a high theft rate, though I was never impacted fortunately. raccoons out the wazzoo too.
