That giant leaf vacuum is insane. What. Why not just let the leave be on the ground? AFAIK around here they just let em fly all over the damn place (and clog the storm drains lol)

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 24 November 2016 06:15 (seven years ago) link

I always forget that i can take the leaves from the front of the house where the trees are, to the back of the house where the beds need a good mulching. So thanks for the reminder.

going to proudly just let my leaves settle on my yard in celebration of not living in a gated community

― mh 😏, Tuesday, November 22, 2016 8:41 PM Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

i'm glad my new community isn't gated. the one at my old community was infuriating. I think I mentioned before, but they only let one resident per house put a number in the box, so if he wasn't home when you dialed the gate code - tough, they had to tailgate.

the weirdest incident was a few weeks ago, my last few nights in the old place, it's late at night and this dude who looks to be in a mondo hurry pulls into the community behind me. he goes to the call box, I go to the resident scan, and scan my card, right around the time that he presumably gets buzzed in by his friend.

I go in first and he follows up behind me, then he passes me at 30 or so mph in the oncoming lane (speed limit in the community is like 10 as it's winding). he zips through the community, and then stops next to the security guard, who is parked on the other side, preventing me from getting by. he chats with him, then leaves, and then I start to go and the security guard shouts WHOA, where are you going? do you live here? I'm like "yeah", and then he asks "why didn't you scan your card" and I said "I did!" and he was like "well that guy just told me you tailgated him in" and I'm like...."no, if anything he might have tailgated me in, he came in behind me then passed me at a fast speed" and he was all like "oh I'll go follow him then".

uhhh....so yeah, fuck gates. hasn't stopped the community from having a high theft rate, though I was never impacted fortunately. raccoons out the wazzoo too.

There's one stall in the office rest room, and for some reason, people like to close its door upon leaving.

Meaning that once every couple of times I have to use it, I first have to crouch down to see if there's any feet under there.

still won't identify the people who pee while crouched position, standing on the seat though

Two things would either happen, fifty percent of the time.

1.) I'd get an I'M IN HERE! yelled at me at top volume, or

2.) The occupant would remain curiously quiet, I'd open the door and be met with

I made the mistake of entering a bathroom without knocking, because I thought it was the entrance to a multi-stall bathroom, but instead it was the entrance to a one-seater bathroom, which did lock, but not everybody tended to lock them. so I open the door and there I am making eye contact with one of my trainees who is on the toilet.

I felt so bad and embarrassed afterwards and didn't call on that person the rest of the day out of guilt.

Neanderthal, Friday, 25 November 2016 20:47 (seven years ago) link

(in my defense this was my first day in this building, which was in another state, and I foolishly assumed their layout was similar to ours, shitter-wise)

This function used to come in handy back in the days when the lights would turn off after ten minutes, and I would open the door to activate the sensor to turn them back on.

not in the bathrooms pplains describes, or most public restrooms (at least here in FL). Port-a-potties are usually the only ones that have the 'occupied' thing. not everybody seems to know how to use them but with the latter it doesn't matter cos there's usually so many available the chances of walking in on someone are p minimal.

re: non-door locker comment upthread, I too don't get not locking the door when you're on the can but *shrug*

Neanderthal, Saturday, 26 November 2016 05:19 (seven years ago) link

Urgency?
Or traumatic incident in past of being trapped in a toilet and everybody finding out?
Leading to one having to slink away with tail between legs hand in notice, move to a new town where people aren't still talking about it.
Or something.

Neanderthal, Monday, 28 November 2016 22:42 (seven years ago) link

argh my new boss does this

I had a three-person meeting with him and the team lead last week and it was so infuriating when he asked questions about the details of what I was working on and then as soon as I started answering he would just talk over me and ask something different for the team lead to answer

and all our team meetings last 3x longer than they're supposed to and nobody can get a word in edgeways e.g.

boss: [rambling, vague monologue which finally reaches something which appears to be a question]
worker: well first we'd need to -
boss: I mean what I'm saying is -- [more vague ramblings, repetition of original question or possibly a different question with some of the same words in]
worker: OK we just did something which should -
boss: [muses on the nature of the universe for an hour]

people who have a policy for reservations that involve leaving a voicemail and say "we'll only call you if there is a problem".

so...how do we know for sure you got our message?

(there's a local theatre that does this and a few things people have showed up having not gotten a "there's a problem call" only to find out their voicemail was bungled.

also people who sell tickets using Paypal but don't bother to limit the transactions to their capacity so they oversell.

App notifications that don't actually notify you of anything.

I swear, Facebook must've figured out that seeing the number "4" inside a tiny red circle will trigger just about anyone to click and see what surprises they've got waiting. Most of the time, it's non-news like "So-and-so is still waiting on his friend request!" or "This post you have nothing to do with has a new comment."

Instagram has followed the lead now too. I'll click the notifications bug and see, yep, those same three people are still waiting for me to accept or decline their invitation.

pplains, Wednesday, 7 December 2016 22:53 (seven years ago) link

Not sure if it's bad bus stop set up or dumb people but the idea that there is no need for people to step away from the doors of a full bus that is about to empty. Or coming the other way the idea that you need to dodge around a bunch of people to get off a bus and will probably come very close at least to colliding with some eejit as you try to walk away from the bus.

Not sure if this is just down to pretty much nothing having been done about changing the layout of the pavement where the buses stop when they redid the square several years ago. I don't think there were any bus stops down taht side where my terminus stop is when the road was also open on the now pedestrianised side of the square.
I can't be the only person who finds that a major pain.

Also possibly even worse si the bus stop where the coaches out of town stop outside GMIT the campus that's most of the way out of town.
IT has a narrow pavement with a bus shelter on one side and the perimeter wall for GMIT on the other side of teh pavement. & it's where you need to stand with suitcases etc if you're waiting for a bus to the airport or to Dublin or wherever.
Just hoping that they will rethink that entire junction when they open the Garda station HQ that's being built opposite. Can't see how that junction is going to work if the main police station is on it as it currently exists.

I think this one's rational anger but as a help desk agent there's nothing more counter-productive than a client's thoughts about why something is not working and their rampant chatter. I mean, I wouldn't go into a hospital and try to correct a doctor's technique during a surgery. Just let me do my job.
