got a speeding ticket in Valdosta in November - 86 mph in a 70 zone. valid ticket, but here's the fun part about Valdosta tickets
*they don't tell you the amount of your fine on the ticket, by design*they give you a court appearance date*Obviously, you can waive that date by pleading guilty - there's a spot on the ticket where you can sign to do just that, except nowhere on the ticket do they give instructions for what you're to do with the ticket after you've signed it (no envelope provided either)*There are no instructions as to how you can pay your fine if you don't appear in court, no website info or details on how you can find out the amount of your fine*I easily found the website searching on my own, but to pay it, you have to enter your citation number and fine amount. To get your fine amount, you either have to call a number or look at the schedule of fines they post online and find your violation on there and manually input the amount yourself.*You make the payment, and then later you get an email telling you if you sent it to the right place and for the right amount or not*Because I was 16 mph over, I can then get a secondary $200 "super speeder" ticket from the State of Georgia later.
wtf is this nonsense?

(tbh I'm not really 'angry' so much as I'm fairly sure I figured it out right, just amused at how ridiculously inefficient the whole process is)

I got a speeding ticket here in Southern California, pretty similar runaround bullshit. Best part is the ticket is $35... PLUS any little fee they feel like adding to it. New municipal building fund. New road construction. Starbuck's for the guys in the station fund. So it wound up being $240, would've been $300 if I had opted for traffic school; I'm poor and have a spotless driving record so I had to go for the former.
Just for the record, though, when I lived in NJ I got pulled over twice for speeding and neither time did I get points or a ticket, one dude gave me a warning and the other a small citation for not changing my address on my license (I had just moved and it slipped my mind) which wound up costing nothing when I had proof of changing it. So speed in New Jersey, I guess.

Wondering if the opacity of speeding tickets in particular states has any connection to how POC in those states get fine-mined for revenues?

No doubt about it. Also makes it easier for cops to throw POC in jail for the slightest justification

I was waiting in line at the airport just a few minutes ago, waiting for the monitor to ding and tell me what attendant to see. Instead, this person down at the end starts waving and shouting, so I head down there. "I think your monitor number button is broken," I say. "Oh," she says, "I didn't press the button."
Why not!?!?!

― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 January 2017 23:44 (seven years ago) link
i don't understand the monitor dinging story. i've never waited in a line at the airport where they pressed.. what, buttons? to make a sound that indicates you're next?
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 8 January 2017 00:40 (seven years ago) link
At the Southwest counter there is a monitor that dings and says things like "proceed to clerk 34" or "proceed to clerk 21" or whatever. When it's not dinging it's just showing pictures of Southwest staff making silly faces, which I stared at until they yelled me over, which they would not have had to do if they simply pressed the button and made the monitor ding and say "proceed to counter 21."

I don't really deal with Facebook much these days, but I had a couple of friends who whose running devices would automatically post the distance they just ran. "Dan just ran 10 miles!" or whatever. I really wanted to post, like, "Josh just walked a half block!"

Yeah if you're so great at running long distances, why are informing me of that while you're driving?
It seems a trifle defensive. Like a beer mug that says "I didn't drink very much last month." Or a cookie tin that says "normally I go gluten-free, but I'm splurging right now."

But for some reason he has the stink of britpop lad culture on him.
I got the impression England had basically gotten sick of him for this very reason and he was banished over here. Also get the impression his super nice "character" is entirely an act designed to steal some of Fallon's thunder.

Technology getting too small to be handled comfortably. Had to pick up a Flash drive at the airport cos I realised i'd left my memory stick at my mother's place. Now got this thing which is 32GB but is the size of a thumbnail including the part you stick into the computer. So actually being able to take it out of the computer and put in the tv then take it out of the slot there is a pain. Could do with a handle or something.
Can't get a grip on it if i have it on a multiusb extension thing cos it doesn't stick out as far as the USB connections on the cables beside it.
― Stevolende, Saturday, 14 January 2017 10:50 (seven years ago) link
was it a name brand drive in original packaging? I'm justifiably paranoid guy when it comes to flash memory devices
― mh ๐, Saturday, 14 January 2017 15:46 (seven years ago) link
Yeah, it was name drive bought from name high st type shop. Airport branch. It's just really fiddly cos the only bit that isn't the metal connection is a couple of mm thick plastic handle strip. So manipulating in and out of slots demands manual dexterity. Not sure how easy to see through bubble pack it would be. Hate to need to use this if I had arthritis or something. Slot on tv is an indent behind the screen so it's a pain. Memory stick was its own handle for things like that. Several cm of body etc.
