Definitely that.

And that every news site on earth now throws a blaringly loud video of the story into every text article.

that is the worst, especially on mobile sites.

especially when the video is hidden somewhere on the page and you can't find where it is to disable it or it freezes your shitty chromebook

I was waiting in line at the airport just a few minutes ago, waiting for the monitor to ding and tell me what attendant to see. Instead, this person down at the end starts waving and shouting, so I head down there. "I think your monitor number button is broken," I say. "Oh," she says, "I didn't press the button."

Why not!?!?!

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 January 2017 23:43 (seven years ago) link

Also, I hate the sound of people eating in movie theatres, especially popcorn.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 January 2017 23:44 (seven years ago) link

i don't understand the monitor dinging story. i've never waited in a line at the airport where they pressed.. what, buttons? to make a sound that indicates you're next?

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 8 January 2017 00:40 (seven years ago) link

At the Southwest counter there is a monitor that dings and says things like "proceed to clerk 34" or "proceed to clerk 21" or whatever. When it's not dinging it's just showing pictures of Southwest staff making silly faces, which I stared at until they yelled me over, which they would not have had to do if they simply pressed the button and made the monitor ding and say "proceed to counter 21."

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 8 January 2017 01:52 (seven years ago) link

That's up there with people who knock gently on my front door instead of pushing the doorbell.

And another yes to harbl's turn signal.

13.1 and 26.2 stickers on cars. You ran a marathon, fuuuuucking grrreaaaattt I needed to know.

Everybody, everywhere, always. Maybe better suited for the depression thread. (Not to mistaken for misanthropy - I love people, I just find them deeply irritating)

Eallach mhรณr an duine leisg (dowd), Sunday, 8 January 2017 17:00 (seven years ago) link

I don't really deal with Facebook much these days, but I had a couple of friends who whose running devices would automatically post the distance they just ran. "Dan just ran 10 miles!" or whatever. I really wanted to post, like, "Josh just walked a half block!"

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 8 January 2017 17:19 (seven years ago) link

"Brian thought about walking from Staples to Trader Joe's but it was like half a block and the car was right there so..."

13.1 and 26.2 stickers on cars.

Yeah if you're so great at running long distances, why are informing me of that while you're driving?

It seems a trifle defensive. Like a beer mug that says "I didn't drink very much last month." Or a cookie tin that says "normally I go gluten-free, but I'm splurging right now."

I'm not sure why I hate James corden so much - everyone seems to live him. But for some reason he has the stink of britpop lad culture on him.

xp Neanderthal heh

But for some reason he has the stink of britpop lad culture on him.

I got the impression England had basically gotten sick of him for this very reason and he was banished over here. Also get the impression his super nice "character" is entirely an act designed to steal some of Fallon's thunder.

hes more stage school than lad culture

When someone says 'are you there' on the phone while having spent the last 40 minutes talking to them and taking 2 seconds to breathe. Strikes me as high maintenance.

Technology getting too small to be handled comfortably. Had to pick up a Flash drive at the airport cos I realised i'd left my memory stick at my mother's place. Now got this thing which is 32GB but is the size of a thumbnail including the part you stick into the computer.
So actually being able to take it out of the computer and put in the tv then take it out of the slot there is a pain.
Could do with a handle or something.

Can't get a grip on it if i have it on a multiusb extension thing cos it doesn't stick out as far as the USB connections on the cables beside it.

Stevolende, Saturday, 14 January 2017 10:50 (seven years ago) link

was it a name brand drive in original packaging? I'm justifiably paranoid guy when it comes to flash memory devices

mh ๐Ÿ˜, Saturday, 14 January 2017 15:46 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, it was name drive bought from name high st type shop. Airport branch.
It's just really fiddly cos the only bit that isn't the metal connection is a couple of mm thick plastic handle strip. So manipulating in and out of slots demands manual dexterity. Not sure how easy to see through bubble pack it would be. Hate to need to use this if I had arthritis or something. Slot on tv is an indent behind the screen so it's a pain. Memory stick was its own handle for things like that. Several cm of body etc.

Stevolende, Saturday, 14 January 2017 16:36 (seven years ago) link

I'm with you on those, especially the little bluetooth things.

Had to pick up a Flash drive at the airport

Glad I read the rest of the sentence. Was wondering why you didn't tell it to just grab a taxi.

^ For sure.

I wish we also lived in a time when a movie with a female ensemble class was not billed or perceived as a "female movie" VS. whether it's just a good or bad film.

Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Tuesday, 17 January 2017 20:15 (seven years ago) link

Overheard a relative and my 7-year-old son talking about Ghostbusters this Christmas

RELATIVE: Did you ever see the sequel? People didn't like it as much as the first one.

SON: No, I've only seen one Ghostbusters. Why didn't they like it?

RELATIVE: Well, first of all, the Ghostbusters were girls....

pplains, Tuesday, 17 January 2017 21:30 (seven years ago) link

And yeah, I had so many corrections I wanted to make out loud, but the relative was female and I didn't want to jump in to mansplain the canon and timeline of Ghostbusters to her.

pplains, Tuesday, 17 January 2017 21:31 (seven years ago) link
