americans feel it a sign of weakness to say "sorry" because it implies fault for some reason. we really hate that, admitting fault

mh 😏, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 14:51 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, sorry about that.

"sorry" implies not so much an admission of fault, but an abject state of mind

The best apologies are when someone says "I'm sorry YOU feel that way".

"I'm sorry if you were offended."

pplains, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 21:31 (seven years ago) link

I had a co-worker who used to sit across the cube from me, so I'd hear her calls, and at least 3 or more times a day, I'd hear her say (in a calm demeanor) "Well, I'm sorry I offended you".

I was like...what the hell are you saying to these people that you have to say that multiple times a day?

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 21:36 (seven years ago) link

And if I offended you, I'm sorry, but maybe you needed to be offended. YOU CAN'T BRING ME DOWN.

lol

Neanderthal, Saturday, 4 February 2017 15:32 (seven years ago) link

That somebody would park so far forward outside a streetdoor on an access stairwell that you have to consciously watch yourself exiting. Means that navigating large objects in and out of doorway would be a hassle.
Seems like front wheel must be up to pavement.

Stevolende, Sunday, 5 February 2017 17:08 (seven years ago) link

People who, while trying to exit a parking lot, pull far forward and block the sidewalk even though its obvious the street is so busy they won't have a chance to pull out for a minute or so. And when they see that they're blocking a bunch of pedestrians for an unforeseeable amount of time make no attempt to back up but rather make us walk halfway into the street to get around them.

Also, when I've walked halfway across a crosswalk and a car tries to turn left in front of me. This is obviously insane, so the car will driver will beep the horn as if to say, "Hey, why don't you pause in the middle of the fucking street and let me pass by so I don't have to press on this pedally thing under my foot and lose 5 precious seconds." If you don't do as they ask they usually flip out and start shouting.

i'm pretty sure all motorist-related anger is rational. like when i was crossing at the crosswalk last week and had to stop in the middle of the road because this driver was driving sloooowly toward me and not stopping because they were looking at their phone. i wanted to kick their car door. but i didn't. i mean the driver was about 2 feet away from me and i was staring at them and i was standing in the middle of the road and they had no idea i was there. not a clue. that made me very rationally angry.

scott seward, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:20 (seven years ago) link

i always want to yell "hey, crosswalk!" but i feel like i'm gonna end up sounding like dustin hoffman in midnight cowboy so i just glare at people.

scott seward, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:21 (seven years ago) link

i'm really big on crosswalks. i always use them unless there isn't a car anywhere near me for blocks. i see so many people with small children and babies just running out into the middle of main street in town and kinda just hoping people will stop for them instead of just walking 50 feet to the crosswalk. drives me nuts.

scott seward, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:24 (seven years ago) link

sounding like dustin hoffman in midnight cowboy would be awesome tho

Eats like Elvis, shits like De Niro (Tom D.), Monday, 6 February 2017 18:25 (seven years ago) link

Is a crosswalk is a pedestrian crossing where pedestrians have the right of way? What we call a zebra crossing?

Eats like Elvis, shits like De Niro (Tom D.), Monday, 6 February 2017 18:26 (seven years ago) link

Yes.

Keyes OTM. Always want to do one of those 70s cop show moves where I jump and slide across their front hood.

pplains, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:29 (seven years ago) link

xp
Yes. And in California, at least, all intersections are considered crosswalks even if unmarked.

nickn, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:30 (seven years ago) link

So cars have to stop when you step on to them?

Eats like Elvis, shits like De Niro (Tom D.), Monday, 6 February 2017 18:31 (seven years ago) link

I did actually get out of the car one morning and scream at a truck that went right by a school bus that was picking up kids and had its lights on. that made me insanely mad.

scott seward, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:32 (seven years ago) link

yeah, you're supposed to wait at the crosswalk and then cars have to stop. though they often just go right by you. but it's a state law here in massachusetts i think. you're supposed to stop if you see someone waiting.

scott seward, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:33 (seven years ago) link

or cars will stop on one side of the street and like i said you can be stuck in the middle of the road waiting for people on the other side to stop.

scott seward, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:34 (seven years ago) link

Because, as a non-driver, I hate when pedestrians thank drivers for stopping to let them across when what they are thanking the drivers for is not breaking the law and mowing them down and leaving them a mangled mess of broken limbs and torn flesh.

Eats like Elvis, shits like De Niro (Tom D.), Monday, 6 February 2017 18:34 (seven years ago) link

the driving culture in britain is god awful. whenever i come back to vancouver from visiting home i am surprised that as a pedestrian i am treated like the royalty of the road. this happens mainly because there are stop signs at almost all intersections, but even when there aren't drivers will tend to let you by.

Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Monday, 6 February 2017 18:36 (seven years ago) link

i think people who have lived here for years still think of main street as a sleepy little street where they can walk wherever they want but it's really not sleepy anymore and people get hit by cars all the time. which is why i wish everyone would just use the crosswalks.

scott seward, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:36 (seven years ago) link

yeah, around where I live the cars never stop, even though there a big "Yield to Pedestrians in Crosswalk" signs. It annoys me irrationally to see people just standing there and waiting. Just step out and cause a three car pile-up, cucks.

duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Monday, 6 February 2017 18:36 (seven years ago) link

there are laws, people ignore them, which is dumb because if it's at all busy and the town isn't dumb, eventually they end up with an actual light or stop sign being installed and now drivers have to stop all the time instead of just having to pay attention to determine whether a stop is needed

there were a couple crosswalks installed around town with painted lines and a yellow pedestrian crossing sign that has blinking lights that are activated by pushing a button when you want to cross. my policy is to hit it and immediately start crossing, and if people act aggrieved that a human actually wanted to cross a street, I smile and emphatically point at the blinking sign, slowing my crossing to do so

mh 😏, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:36 (seven years ago) link

"thanking the drivers for is not breaking the law"

ha, this is true. thanks for not killing me!

scott seward, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:37 (seven years ago) link

there are often traffic stings in L.A. where cops will pose as innocent pedestrians and walk into the crosswalk and cops down the street will pull over anyone who doesn't stop.

i always assume around here that people driving up to a stop sign or crosswalk will NOT stop. i assume it more since we had a kid. what i think is amazing are the people who passive aggressively walk across the street or step in front of you as you're driving and force you to stop for them. like...they don't want to get hit but they're being such assholes that they make you screech to a halt. i don't think these people are trying to kill themselves, really. (though our wedding coordinator's husband a few days before our ceremony, he was driving on a freeway here and a 16 year old girl ran out in front of his car and killed herself that way...so nm)

nomar, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:39 (seven years ago) link

i'm also a fan of not thanking drivers but making passing eye contact with cars that are turning or slowing to acknowledge that I, human person who is walking, acknowledge their presence so they sure as hell pay attention

mh 😏, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:39 (seven years ago) link

yeah if someone is driving quickly like nomar said I'll wait for them to go through, but if I'm already standing at the crosswalk and some asshole a block away obviously could see me if they were looking, I'll start to cross but give myself space to jump back

fuck em, they shouldn't be going 45 mph in a semi-residential area with crosswalks and can have fun wearing out their brakes

mh 😏, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:41 (seven years ago) link

it definitely scared me when my kids were younger. i wanted them to be able to walk around main street but people wouldn't see them AT ALL when they stood at the crosswalk. but i would just tell them they had to wait until people stopped. and then i would tell them that most people were really drunk in town and they had to be really careful. i still tell them that.

scott seward, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:41 (seven years ago) link

"there are often traffic stings in L.A. where cops will pose as innocent pedestrians and walk into the crosswalk and cops down the street will pull over anyone who doesn't stop."

I would LOVE if they did that here.

scott seward, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:42 (seven years ago) link

I thank drivers all the time just not at a pedestrian crossing where I have right of way.

there are often traffic stings in L.A. where cops will pose as innocent pedestrians and walk into the crosswalk and cops down the street will pull over anyone who doesn't stop.

I wish they did that here.

(xp) hey!

Eats like Elvis, shits like De Niro (Tom D.), Monday, 6 February 2017 18:43 (seven years ago) link

note that this stretch of road I'm thinking of used to be four-ish lanes wide with parking on one side and an occasional turn lane in the middle, and it was re-painted a number of years ago with the idea there are a lot of businesses that could use foot traffic and it's not a long stretch. so it now has, depending on the area, one or two parallel parking lanes, two bike lanes, two lanes for traffic, and a middle turning lane

right after they did this, assholes would be so angry they had to go 30mph and would zoom around you in the bike/parking lanes. wtf.

mh 😏, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:44 (seven years ago) link

we live at an intersection on a residential street which is pretty notorious (among the people who live at this intersection) for drivers not stopping. i mean not just merely slowing down a bit, but full on accelerating through the stop sign. speed limit is 25, you see people going 60. i see people with kids in their car doing this. or people drag racing. the "drive like your kids live here" signs don't work, i guess.

nomar, Monday, 6 February 2017 18:45 (seven years ago) link

9 out of 10 Subarus will always stop for me when i'm at a crosswalk. just sayin'. anecdotal.
