I like a tuna sandwich, but warm/cooked can tuna is opening up the gates of hell. Fresh tuna like a grilled tuna steak is a totally different food. Canned Salmon is just as funky and different canned, but it is better cooked into some redneck salmon patties than right out of a can.

I notice there is no ABOMINATION choice in this poll. Fish from a can or tin is disgusting, and I have refused it ever since little me was undergoing chemotherapy, some genius decided a tuna hotdish was what's for dinner, and waves of nausea led to a proj vom of epic proportions. I loathe canned tuna more than any other foodstuff (it's not tuna per se, because it's awesome in sushi and great seared, and I found lox-style smoked tuna once and loved it).

The Britishes are lovely people mostly, but I will loudly judge the lot of you for the puke-alike abomination that is tuna and sweetcorn, especially when it appears barf-like atop some poor, defenceless baked potato.

feel like those who hate tuna salad would beg for it when faced with eating ham salad

NOPE. You can put mustard on ham salad, there's no fucking CORN in it, bring it on.

In general, dud. Usually because there's too much tuna.

I daresay there are lots of wonderful tunasandw recipes up there, so its not 100% dud i.e. abomination, just that there is usually something else offered as a choice.

Did

Yep, my spelling corrector does not recognise the word "Dud"...

Tuna sandwich is A+++ yum, but fuck off if you're coming anywhere near me with sweetcorn. Literally the worst vegetable in the world. Like chewing on old, dead people's teeth.

"i hate canned tuna" is a near meaningless statement given the vast diff between a dense dry shreddy firm puck of pink skipjack and supple large flaked white albacore in olive oil

I can eat canned sardines and oysters, but canned tuna is just too reminiscent of feeding cheap canned to the cats growing up. Total psychological block, I'm sure it tastes fine and yada yada yada but I can't get past that and on to tuna salad.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 16 February 2017 10:04 (seven years ago) link

Right, let me gross-out the Americans again.

Every Wednesday growing up my mum worked in the evening so she'd prepare a tuna fish pie during the day that I'd put in the oven to heat so it was ready when my dad got home.

Tuna fish pie consisted of canned tuna mixed with canned condensed mushroom soup, topped with mash potato, and a sprinkling of cheese on top.

I've not had this in years but I reckon it would be perfect comfort food.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 16 February 2017 10:44 (seven years ago) link

sounds legit. no sweetcorn. not sure about mushroom soup though. not sure what condensed soup would work better. chicken? or is that really really weird?

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Thursday, 16 February 2017 10:46 (seven years ago) link

I know there is a wide range in the quality of canned tuna, but that's equally true of cat food. KEEP IT AWAY FROM ME.

A mix of canned tuna, Campbell's cream of mushroom soup, and canned green beans whacked into a casserole dish, topped with fried onions and baked until it is hot as napalm - this might as well be the state dish of Minnesota. Reader, I moved.

Great, a tuna stan. I like it raw or rare, but cooking it through and/or canning it ruins it for me.

At the moment, I am working at a Subway inside of a Walmart.
I had a customer come in one day and everything started out smoothly. This lady had been coming in for quite some time, so I kind of recognized her. She’s your typical Walmart customer. Overweight, looking like trailer trash and riding (as we call them in our store) a fat cart. She orders a footlong tuna sandwich and wants us to put all the veggies on it. So, like I said, everything was going smooth until after the veggies were placed on the sandwich. That’s when she said to me, “This may be a strange request.” At this point, I’m thinking that I’ve heard many a people say that, and it’s never really that strange. So, I ask her what she wants and she proceeded to ask me to put 4 white macadamia nut cookies on her tuna sandwich. I think I gave her a really disgusted look, but I’m not sure. I obliged and placed the cookies on her sandwich, but she wasn’t done yet. She then asked me to cover the cookies with vinegar until they were soggy and ready to fall apart. Then to top it off, she made me double up on the mayo over the soggy cookies. At this point, I felt like I wanted to puke all over her sandwich. I think I may have a little into the back of my throat.

This lady is now a regular customer and she gets this same thing every single day.

and they say the British are disgusting

Fish from a can or tin is disgusting

i couldn't live without fish from a can or a tin. it is amazing.

rtc otm tho, just buy the jarred brindisa tuna on ocado, it's expensive but it's worth every penny. big jar of it and some bread, maybe an anchovy or two, decent olive oil and a glass of wine. easiest and best dinner.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 16 February 2017 12:38 (seven years ago) link

ya

I also like those little oily tins of sardines, especially if they're slightly spiced

tuna sandwiches are good. excellent cricket match tea option and I'll generally go for a mix of white and wholemeal breads, cucumber preferred. my only real dislike is as dog latin says for the presence of sweetcorn

my mum made variations of tuna pasta too often for me to ever do that dish. i can barely eat pasta anymore, we had so fucking much of it as a kid. #middleclassproblems

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 16 February 2017 13:24 (seven years ago) link

Also I don't think I've ever had tuna pasta.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 16 February 2017 13:24 (seven years ago) link

we had potatoes loads but i dunno, i could never get sick of those. genetics. i fucking love potatoes and rice - i do like pasta fine just never cook it. was interesting to note a sharp decline in the sales of pasta sauces in the uk, feels like the end of a strange era.

those are good

I haven't tried canned tuna again for years because I'd start retching every time I tried as a kid. Something about that somewhat metallic tang (of the fish, not from being canned) combined with the texture is bleh
