My friend Olly from uni similarly couldn't eat pasta anymore. Whereas my parents never had anything but potatoes.

Also I don't think I've ever had tuna pasta.
we had potatoes loads but i dunno, i could never get sick of those. genetics. i fucking love potatoes and rice - i do like pasta fine just never cook it. was interesting to note a sharp decline in the sales of pasta sauces in the uk, feels like the end of a strange era.

Absolutely classic. Tuna melt on rye (the cheese has to be *melted*) even more Classic.

there is a wide spectrum of tuna sandwiches or tuna salads, from delicious to disgusting. if it's good then i'm down but i can easily see how people think it's an abomination
― marcos, Thursday, 16 February 2017 15:15 (seven years ago) link

people posting about fresh tuna steaks on a thread about tuna fish sandwiches is like going on a thread about eating shit and being like "I love shit, but I eat it in the form of food that hasn't yet been digested and converted into waste"

Fish from a can or tin is disgusting
You ever had fancy Spanish or Portuguese tinned fish (mackerel, sardines, etc.)? Divine.

I haven't tried canned tuna again for years because I'd start retching every time I tried as a kid. Something about that somewhat metallic tang (of the fish, not from being canned) combined with the texture is bleh

mmm, metallic tang

Tuna fish pie consisted of canned tuna mixed with canned condensed mushroom soup, topped with mash potato, and a sprinkling of cheese on top.
I've not had this in years but I reckon it would be perfect comfort food.

I love tinned anchovies - they are the only tinned fish I will eat, but the Spanish tins of clams, mussels, octopus or squid are amazing.
Another form of tuna I will eat: bonito flakes. Love them wriggling away on top of okonomiyaki.
― jane burkini (suzy), Thursday, 16 February 2017 18:00 (seven years ago) link
Is okonomiyaki readily available in the UK? I'd never heard of it until last month, during a stay in Tokyo. It's delicious and I brought back some bags of okonomiyaki mix. Apparently there's a resto here (Paris) that sells it but, like, just one, I think.

Well, I live about five minutes' walk from an okonomiyaki restaurant, one of maybe five in London. This is it: http://www.abeno.co.uk
― jane burkini (suzy), Thursday, 16 February 2017 18:14 (seven years ago) link
ah nice. I see that there are a couple more places now here, e.g. http://www.okomusu.com, just around the corner from the place with the best fries in town, Chez Nenesse (but only on Thursdays for lunch when the fries are made with duck fat).
relevance to thread: sometimes Europeans do awful things like put mayo on fries, thus making them cousins of the foul tuna fish sandwiches.

"was interesting to note a sharp decline in the sales of pasta sauces in the uk"
maybe that case of botulism in a Lloyd Grossman branded jar of processed gloop didn't help. I peel and de-seed a shitload of tomatoes every week to make my own sauce/soup batches these days, so obviously I'm dead sophisticated.
But there is nowt wrong with this particular model of sarnie imo. It is sort of classic - but I see the BLT as a classic as well and even the chattering classes love a BLT maybe?. I had a tuna crunch baguette from Greggs the other day. It lacked a lot of crunch and could have done with some mustard, but it was still basically quite a tasty + enjoyable sandwich.
