I love tinned anchovies - they are the only tinned fish I will eat, but the Spanish tins of clams, mussels, octopus or squid are amazing.

Another form of tuna I will eat: bonito flakes. Love them wriggling away on top of okonomiyaki.

Is okonomiyaki readily available in the UK? I'd never heard of it until last month, during a stay in Tokyo. It's delicious and I brought back some bags of okonomiyaki mix. Apparently there's a resto here (Paris) that sells it but, like, just one, I think.

relevance to thread: sometimes Europeans do awful things like put mayo on fries, thus making them cousins of the foul tuna fish sandwiches.

maybe that case of botulism in a Lloyd Grossman branded jar of processed gloop didn't help. I peel and de-seed a shitload of tomatoes every week to make my own sauce/soup batches these days, so obviously I'm dead sophisticated.

But there is nowt wrong with this particular model of sarnie imo. It is sort of classic - but I see the BLT as a classic as well and even the chattering classes love a BLT maybe?. I had a tuna crunch baguette from Greggs the other day. It lacked a lot of crunch and could have done with some mustard, but it was still basically quite a tasty + enjoyable sandwich.

So I thought tuna casserole made with condensed canned soup (bleeugh) was a particularly midwestern thing but there you are, some UK people also mentioning it.

Does anyone do it the way I grew up with it? The sauce is bechamel. Thick bechamel, onions, tuna and then add whatever else you want (some people do corn, some apple or pineapple PS THIS IS WRONG AND AWFUL). Top with cheese and breadcrumbs or mash then cheesy topping then bake.

I am both a UK person and an exiled Midwesterner. The UK has become more attuned to both Thanksgiving and trash American food in the past decade, which may be why horrific forms of hotdish are being discussed here.

tuna sandwiches are fine (we don't use the redundant "fish" here) these tuna + soup + urine + spam casserole whatevers are obv unconscionable

For reference, mayo repulsed me until I was about 18 and I first experienced chips dipped in mayo. Or fries, for Americans. Chips dipped in fries.

I couldn't eat mayo, egg yolks, or the fat on any kind of red meat because of similar "vommed it during chemotherapy" reasons I still avoid canned tuna or any kind of squash (except for pumpkin in pie) to this day.

Mayo, god help us

I have only ever had processed mayo and quite like it. But if it didn't exist I couldn't imagine asking someone in a sandwich shop to rustle us up some raw egg yolk with mustard and olive oil, and dollop it on please.
