returning to the matter at hand tho
i fully accept i may be alone in this but aren't tuna steaks really kind of... dull
meaty but not meat, fish but not fishy. what's the usp beyond not being something else

I would do many things for a tuna sandwich right now. Not anything, but at least several possibly questionable things.

inspired by this thread i put curry powder in my tunafish but it seems like it didn't do anything

agreed - i like a tuna or swordfish steak well enough, it's nice in a hot country with a light side or whatever, but it is like the fish version of chicken breast.

Can of tuna, salt, pepper, red chilli flakes, hint of cider vinegar, spring onions, cheddar cheese, all mixed up, put on toast and lightly grilled. That was lunch today. And it was mega.

Once I poached a tune steak in olive oil and after letting it cool, I pulled it apart into flakes and combine with mayo, diced kalamata olives, celery, dijon mustard, red onion, diced granny smith apples, pepper, dill and boiled eggs. Spread on crackers was one of the best snacks I've ever made.

but it is like the fish version of chicken breast.
I must also concur with this. It's a rather bland fish when cooked as a steak. Probably the best use of good tuna is in sushi. I love spicy tuna rolls.

It's wtf to me that someone would go to that trouble for a snack.

poaching a tuna steak in olive oil to make sandwich mix for a cracker is the crowning triumph of this thread

this shit smells so bad. in their own little category of sandwiches that are gross even for people who aren't eating them.

undetailed but strong sense memories of hating unfamiliar colleagues across the break room for inflicting this

What I find strange is theres plenty of other seafood that pongs way more than tuna but people seem to only ever complain about tuna being smelly.

Mackerel sandwiches aren't very common (or people cracking open a can of it at their desk).
― nickn, Monday, 20 February 2017 06:00 (seven years ago) link
Hardboiled eggs are another example and people do eat them at their desk and of course in the lunchroom
I love em tho
Tinned tuna is fine if you eat it soon. There are more things that smell bad that people eat. Ever since i moved to LA i find there is a lot more stinky food here that wasn't smelly where i moved from. Might be because LA is warmer and people don't keep foods at the right temperature, but it has made me more cautious of where I'm getting it from -- deli meat, beef and pork for example

I don't think of tuna as being a fishysmelly fish. I've had more offensive fish lunches at work. I had leftover fish curry once. I should have been sacked.
― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 20 February 2017 08:57 (seven years ago) link
tuna smells gross - the smell of other fish is just a more pure fishy smell - tuna has a sort of dampness to the smell.

There are Italian-style tuna salad sandwiches that don't have mayo. Usually lemon juice, capers, olive oil, a bit of mustard.

don't worry dud voters, we classic voters will not require you to partake of even the tiniest morsel of a tuna sandwich against your wishes, with or without mayonaisse. we are a liberal bunch by and large and peaceable, if not overly provoked.
