stevie (the one with cats) is indeed a fine fellow -- a great host to me back in 2005, and the best chocolate chip pancake maker outside of the US itself.

difficult listening hour, Noodle Vague, ShariVari & goole are all super-reliable and frequently inspirational 'go-tos' for me on all matters political, in the context of what is obv. a dark time.

SV & goole I value for always being so well-informed on all sort of current events & trends, and also being able to succinctly and pithily summarise e.g near-eastern domestic politics or obscure factions of online crypto-fascist neer-do-wells for the rest of us.

dlh & NV can do this too, but what I really value them for is their ability to place events in a broader analytical framework and convincingly connect them with some kind of positive leftist narrative of change, but without slipping into sentimental pieties and platitudes. NV also a knack of putting forward analyses which prod me out of some of my more complacent, basically bourgeois reflexive assumptions (but without resorting to challops or falling into the trap of being 'provocative' for its own sake).

goole should get a grant to write a Rick Perlstein-style history of the alt-right/batshit online conservatism

flopson, Monday, 20 February 2017 17:04 (seven years ago) link

I should pre-empt him with a Reagan bio.

I love Neanderthal for going on the friends and family no speak bcz trump thread and talking about wanting to glass a random drunk redneck, and all the other admissions that make me want to go "+1, x2, bro"

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 00:01 (seven years ago) link

I love JJJ for taking my job as mod hardman and doing it actually well, and sharing his family and guitar knowledge with us like we matter one bit

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 00:03 (seven years ago) link

I love Old Vague, Noodle Casino and Doctor Lunch the best, though. Top four posters

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 00:06 (seven years ago) link

And anybody (qualmsley dude) who mentions me on this thread is secretly REALLY THANK YOU but also come on, shut up, naaahh.

You're too kind! But let's not forget Doctor Frogbius, fact checkin calzino, and Veg Raggrrl.

I guess I'm being fused with Alfred because I found his opinions and tastes so mysterious. All will be revealed.

i like chatting it up w/ mh on the topic of jeans and buying a house

It might just be a result of the threads I frequent, not getting to see the bigger picture of Alfred.

I found Nakhchivan quite difficult to get an overall sense of him too.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 18:55 (seven years ago) link

Nakhchivan is a principle

his eye is on despair-o (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 21 February 2017 19:08 (seven years ago) link

nakhchivan - knows about wine; likes those weird places in eastern europe that are unrecognized by the international community; likes association football and wordplay; occasionally flips his shit and says some nasty shit to a poster he doesn't like

nakh's aesthetic is reasonably well-served with facebook-style context-free image posts but I miss the ilx version

mh 😏, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 19:35 (seven years ago) link

I miss Search. Search was really good at telling you (when you wanted them -- gender neutral -- to) if someone was posting about you in another thread.

being a chronicler of extremity is kind of a crowded field atp... i fell into the rabbit hole early, but i have to admit the fate of a number of harassees that put their heads above water really put me off trying to take it further

i always liked nakh's posts as well, i thought he was long gone?

goole, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 20:37 (seven years ago) link
