This is one of the only planets in the SW canon universe that has more than one observed biome

Some of those are actually different planets btw. Sabine's family/clan are on Krownest, which is in Mandalorian space.

BTW they announced at Celebration that next season is officially the final season.

I'll be vague to avoid major spoilers, but the seeing Thrawn's plan get spoiled at the last minute by the one factor he had no idea existed in the season finale was great

the idea of really skilled swordplay being a matter of sizing up stances, countering, and very little actual action is good imo

oh it was SO GOOD

Watching the entire "canon" from CW to the prequels, and Rebels, OBK is basically the one dude who could probably whup Yoda. He didn't get lucky in EP III; he called it how he saw it, and he was right. There needs to be albums about OBK. The only other truly fearless motherfucker in that galaxy is R2-D2 and he's actually an avatar of god, so

your cognitive privilege (El Tomboto), Thursday, 11 May 2017 04:02 (seven years ago) link

In Revenge of the Sith, Yoda tella Kenobi he isn’t powerful enough to face Sidious, which Yoda then goes to do himself. I do not think, at least that point, if at any point, really, could Kenobi beat Yoda.

the ghost of markers, Thursday, 11 May 2017 05:25 (seven years ago) link

The orbital bombardment of the base by Thrawn is one of the most terrifying things I've seen in an SW movie in terms of showing actual warfare. Like you genuinely feared for the characters' lives there.

Old Lynch's Sex Paragraph (Phil D.), Thursday, 11 May 2017 12:51 (seven years ago) link

well, could Yoda have beaten Sidious? In the movie it's a draw; in the novelization he loses.

I think the best written/performed part of the Maul/Obi-wan episode isn't even the confrontation -- it's Ezra being so driven to help, and Obi-wan just calmly telling him, "You're not supposed to be here." But it doesn't seem to really bother him that this has happened, just acceptance that this is how things have flushed out.

That was the original series' idea of How a Jedi Should Be that stuck with me. Not that being a warrior makes you less of a jedi, but the monk-like existences of Ben and Yoda not simply an artifact of them being in hiding

mh, Thursday, 11 May 2017 14:07 (seven years ago) link

And then him just being chill while Maul basically throws a tantrum, and finally igniting his light saber only after Maul's finally done thinking out loud

your cognitive privilege (El Tomboto), Thursday, 11 May 2017 14:19 (seven years ago) link

it was almost a look of resignation when Maul puzzles out why Obi-wan is there and his primary purpose -- protecting the Skywalker kid, the only thing that spurns him to combat

I enjoyed reading Bloodline! I tend to agree that a lot of what's in it doesn't really appear so much on screen (which is a flaw of the newer movies, mostly TFA), but it did kind of jibe with what I expected about the First Order. Paramilitary, funded by some secret extremists within the government (Hail Hydra), salvaged existing craft from the Empire, mostly lived underground (literally).

Of the recent stock of writers allowed to dabble in Star Wars I'd put Claudia Gray on a higher tier than the others. The writing has a character focus, the connective tissue quotient is way too high on a lot of the others, or they're given characters that seem ephemeral

Dave Filoni with a new animated series coming this fall: https://www.starwars.com/news/star-wars-resistance-set-for-fall-debut

StarWars.com is thrilled to announce that production has begun on Star Wars Resistance, an exciting new animated adventure series about Kazuda Xiono, a young pilot recruited by the Resistance and tasked with a top-secret mission to spy on the growing threat of the First Order. It will premiere this fall on Disney Channel in the U.S. and thereafter, on Disney XD and around the world.

Featuring the high-flying adventure that audiences of all ages have come to expect from Star Wars, Star Wars Resistance — set in the time prior to Star Wars: The Force Awakens — will feature the beloved droid BB-8 alongside ace pilots, colorful new characters and appearances by fan favorites including Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma, voiced by actors Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie, respectively.

The series was created by renowned Lucasfilm Animation veteran Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels); executive-produced by Athena Portillo (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels), Justin Ridge (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels) and Brandon Auman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles); and art-directed by Amy Beth Christenson (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels).

“The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots” said Filoni. “My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”

Marc Buhaj, senior vice president, Programming and general manager, Disney XD, said, “Our colleagues at Lucasfilm have created a compelling narrative for an untold moment in the Star Wars galaxy, and we are excited to partner with them again on this new original series. Star Wars Resistance will bring viewers across generations an engaging story with heart, humor and both new and familiar characters.”

In addition to Isaac and Christie, the voice cast includes actors Christopher Sean (Days of Our Lives), Suzie McGrath (East Enders), Scott Lawrence (Legion), Myrna Velasco (Elena of Avalor), Josh Brener (Silicon Valley), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Bobby Moynihan (DuckTales), Jim Rash (Community), and Rachel Butera (Tammy’s Tiny Tea Time).

As summed up:

xxpost Pretty much my initial guess. (Also: given all the various breadcrumbs being laid EVERYWHERE re cloning things lately in Mandalorian, Bad Batch, etc., that would fit in as well. I've seen it argued that this is a massive Rise of Skywalker retrofit going on, which makes sense -- but I'm actually interested in how that plays out here.)

Finally finished watching Rebels after all these years, very good stuff. Obv on the whole, way more consistent than Clone Wars (though that had a lot of high points tbf) and weird since I watched Season 7 of CW and the first 2 episodes of Ahsoka before this... but yeah. Pretty worthwhile. All the characters (except maybe Zeb who they kinda stopped giving stories after season 2) got nice arcs and the last 1.5 seasons especially had great momentum

cool that they carried over the Disney/deco art style from the final Jedi Temple story into future properties - current Ahsoka credit sequence, some of the stuff we saw in Visions etc.
