Lest we forget KWill also signed such luminaries as Sandy Alomar Jr. and Royce Clayton (y'know, for the OPS), traded Ray Durham for ... um ... something, and gave the Pirates 2/3rds of their current rotation (Josh Fogg & Kip Wells) in exchange for current Sausage Race Participant Todd Ritchie. Up until this off-season, KWill did everything in his power to whack the ChiSox behind the knee w/ a lead pipe. It almost makes me wanna wonder just why he got Colon...

Holy crap, I'm bitter.

Felicity, there are plenty of other middle relievers in the sea. Let Al go. You're too good for him.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

You flatter me, David, but middle reliever? I prefer set-up man and vulture specialist, hmph. But I am so over him.

I adore how Prior always finishes his follow-though with a little mitt-on-the-hip "attitude," like a runway model striking a pose at the end of the catwalk. He's wonderful.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Vulture specialist"? Like Mark Grace & Jose Canseco?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dave R, don't forget Kenny's spectacular "David Wells as a White Sox Player" experiment.

hstencil, Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

vulture specialist = a relief pitcher with more decisions than some of the starters! He's the master of that. He's also actually prety effective, so it's not all sarcastic for me to call him "WInning Pitcher" Levine.

Surely the "Vulture" is a classic roto archetype? e.g., the Angels have a tie or a small lead in late innings, the previous pitcher gets in a jam, Bud Black brings in sinker-slider specialist Al Levine to induce the double play, Levine walks the other guy's baserunner in or somehow lets him score, erasing the lead, and then proceeds to close the inning, Glaus or Garrett Anderson either rally for a couple or don't but if they do the the next thing you know the line looks like Levine (W, 8-6), Percival (S, 35). Not bad for 15 to 35 pitches.

The Canseco pitching story makes me sad. But I liked the inning of perfect relief Steve Finley threw in the D-backs championship year one game when they were getting blown out by the Roxx.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've got zero use for Snow. And if you want Mulder, I'd definitely need more than those two...

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

Can't a team get more than one hold in a game? What're the qualifications for a hold? Just keeping a lead, but for how many innings?

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

gygax! if you need pitching I am hurt you would go anywhere else!

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm beginning to think mark p's comparison of me to Kenny Williams wasn't a compliment.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Obviously I'm trying to become the felicity of holds.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Aaron, what do you want for your Alex Gonzalez? I am trying to corner the market on shortstops named Alex Gonzalez. I am completely serious.

HOLDS WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS
STATS ARE FOR LOSERS
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY

I am pleased that Prior is the #1 "Undroppable" pitcher on ESPN. If you try to release an undroppable player you get an error message. We shall become THE UNDROPPABLES.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Leee, just don't become the felicity of baserunning. Doh!

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

felecity is the Nelson Baker Hunt of cornering the Alex Gonzalez market

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Felicity-- make me an offer!

I can't find a definition of what a Hold actually is?!? My interweb research skills are FAILLLLLLING.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hold = same as a save. Except it's not.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, I mean, I know what it is... but like what exactly the conditions are before a pitcher gets a hold. Like, a save is that the tying run must be at the plate (???!?... the 13-year-old stat geek in me is crying that I don't remember this for sure).

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, the criteria is the same as a save in terms of the team's lead - actually I think it is tying run "in the hole"? In other words you can get a save/hold if your team is up by six but you come in with the bases loaded? I think?! Anyway, the criteria for saves and holds is the same.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

for a save the tying run doesn't have to be at the plate. Beyond that I'm not sure what the criteria is. I still don't know what WHIP is. Or a hold.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

WHIP is easy... it's Walks + Hits per Inning Pitched. I searched the MLBA rules but couldn't find an exact definition of a save or hold. Bummer!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

SAVES FOR RELIEF PITCHERS
10.20
Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions: (1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and (2) He is not the winning pitcher; and (3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions: (a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or (b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces); or (c) He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than one save may be credited in each game.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

ah, I was wondering why there wasn't a BB category for pitching.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

The thing is, "Hold" is not an official stat so there won't be an entry for it in the rulebook. But just substitute "hold" for "save" in the above.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bingo! (heh) I found a history/definition of holds:

http://espn.go.com/mlb/s/2000/0523/546788.html

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

The thing I love is that (c) definition for saves: "he pitches effectively for at least three innings"!

There was some crazy game involving the Red Sox last year where they won by like ten runs, but some dude got a save. I think they were up by like 15 in like the sixth inning, and they brought in a bullpen guy who mopped up the last three innings. He gave up five runs or something. And he got credited with a save!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

My sleeper is Danny Baez (closer- Indians).

Am I alone in finding the ceramic Greg Maddux bear hilarious? Does that seem normal to you people?

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

So is Peter Gammons indie as fuck?

gammons has a musical past. he was in bands (he played guitar) from the time he was in high school in western mass to the time he graduated unc in the late 60's. in his sunday baseball notes section of the boston globe he has a section where he uses song titles to name brief annecdotes from around mlb. he freaked me out when he used sebadoh's "as the world dies the eyes of god grow bigger" as a title to one of his articles. this was around 1993 so i can guarantee you not many people could've told you who sebadoh were let alone name any of their songs.

he must have kids with good taste or something.

otto, Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

How were we supposed to know it was Maddux? They should have him wearing glasses! What's not normal is the way his year is going. Ouch.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

welcome otto to the thread!

(otto is in my *ahem* other league)

felicity, i love how your boy estes flubs throws to keep his ERA down... estes has the accuracy of steve sax ("FORE!") when not throwing from the mound.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

thank gygax!

i'm kind of embarrassed because i think the team that's directly in front of me in *your other league* (you make it sound like a secret child from an illicit double life or something) has been abandoned by it's manager.

i'm not sure my ego can take getting shallaced by random chance.

otto, Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, who is that guy anyway? should i boot him? i thought he was a "friend of a friend" or something... hmmm...

if he has no activity at mid-season, i'll boot him.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

i don't know who he is, i was trying to find that out last week.

and hey, if anyone wants a ticket to tomorrows cubs/pirates game let me know. the guy i was supposed to go with (my boss, actually) just bailed so i have a free ticket.

otto, Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

gygax! is like the commisioner of the world or something.

"or something"

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 April 2003 20:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

I NEED SAVES! Someone help me!

The ceramic GM is cute. The real GM isn't as cute, but he started a season in equally asstastic fashion (y'know, where all those hittable pitches he threws got hit hahd), but he turned it around. Maybe he needs to get some "pitching help" (wink wink) from Don Sutton.

KKKKKKyle Farnsworth got me a hold pitching like a tee ball coach. Therefore, holds are klassik.

Have any of the Braves players ever seen winter before? They're dressed like Packer fans, w/out the cheese. They should lose for disrespecting the baseball gods and not Toughing It Out. Also, having Brian Litrell from the Backstreet Boys singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" for a Turner South promo - that's worth at least 3 circles of Hell.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 April 2003 23:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ugh someone stop the Danny Graves as starter experiment NOW.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 10 April 2003 23:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

But say hello to KKKKKurt Ainsworth!

Leee (Leee), Friday, 11 April 2003 03:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

He was sweet. And, lord, Pac Bell is gorgeous.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 April 2003 03:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

Fine! Nobody wants my David Wells? Hmph.

Ahem, speaking of Vultures, I present Tim "15 pitches" Spooneybarger:

Florida  IP  H  R  ER  BB SO HR ERA
Beckett 5.0 6 2 2 3 7 1 3.29
Tejera 2.2 2 1 1 1 3 1 3.12
Nunez, V 0.1 0 0 0 0 1 0 10.80
Spooneybarger (W, 1-0) 1.0 0 0 0 0 0 0 3.00

Pitches-strikes: Beckett 93-54, Tejera 46-31, Nunez, V , Spooneybarger 15-9

I care not for my 4-place drop in standings. I rule you all in strikeouts and wins.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 11 April 2003 11:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

"I care not for my 4-place drop in standings"

Your words say one thing but your heart speaks another.

I've decided to tinker with my lineup til the cows come home.
