But yeah Prevenge was awesome and everyone should see it

Prevenge never came here :-(
(There was a speculative screening planned, one of those "if we sell x tickets the screening will go ahead" things, and it didn't sell enough - surprisingly I thought)

I've seen a number of good-not-great documentaries; Citizen Jane was my favourite. I'd also add 20th Century Women, which has a release date on IMDB of January 20, 2017.

O and speaking of Francophone animation, there was a delightful new Panique Au Village short - worthy of at least as much attention as anything Aardman do

I'm trying to catch up with Slack Bay on Mubi right now but the terrible subtitles trying to do equivalent vernacular are really putting me off.
― Alba, Friday, 21 July 2017 18:44 (seven years ago) link
lol! my copy of Slack Bay doesn't have subtitles and I read somewhere that the heavy regional dialect would even cause problems even with French viewers.

a bit like my terrible command of English at times, I suppose!

I didn't have a problem with the subtitles on Slack Bay, but then I'm not a French speaker.

Saw this last year and was just about to come here and say, don't sleep on the Serra, it's superb.
Does anyone else feel like it's been a pretty disappointing year for standout films so far in 2017?
I dunno, I saw all these good to great movies in the cinema this year and would be pretty happy with this as a final top ten:
SilenceManchester by the SeaCamerapersonToni ErdmannThe Other Side of HopeCertain WomenOJ Made in AmericaSlack BayIt Comes at NightSong to Song
― Bernie Lugg (Ward Fowler), Saturday, 22 July 2017 06:20 (seven years ago) link
Yeah, will see the Serra either tonight or tomorrow.
Films I have missed are Slack Bay (but its on MUBI so I'll try and see it that way) and Graduation. Maybe Certain Women and A Quiet Passion as well.
Would be happy to vote for Erdmann and Camaraperson in the 2017 poll. Probably to make up for the lack of 2017 films I've seen.

Seeing films with shit subs...its in my blood :)
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 22 July 2017 07:02 (seven years ago) link
My French certainly isn't good enough to question how accurate the translation was: I just meant I found the rendering of the paysan talk grating per se. Not easy for subtitlers. Maybe I'd rather a dubbed Eurotrash-style thing where they all have a particular regional British accent, ha ha. And maybe it's all just as crude a 'funny talk' representation in the original – I dunno.
― Alba, Saturday, 22 July 2017 11:46 (seven years ago) link
Anyway, I gave up, despite admiring aspects of it, because I think the humour just isn't for me. Which is a shame, as after the bad reviews saying the same thing I'd hoped to laugh like a drain at them not getting it.
― Alba, Saturday, 22 July 2017 11:48 (seven years ago) link
I want to rewatch it
― blog haus aka the scene raver (wins), Saturday, 22 July 2017 12:02 (seven years ago) link
Watched Slack Bay at the weekend - what I was reminded of is that Dumont doesn't really so much as humour as a more broken variant of it. Quiet laughs, if any.
To most who like what he does already it felt par for the course with a stranger-at-times world.
Not as a knock-out as the Serra. A one-of-a-kind film and easily top 5 for me.
― xyzzzz__, Monday, 24 July 2017 17:38 (seven years ago) link
Yes, I wanted to say that ppl have overstated the humour in Dumont's last two films, perhaps because there is some, where previously there was none, or very little. But yes, a broken variant - or an alien outsider's idea of Earth humour. All the Laurel and Hardy fat guy stuff in Slack Bay was more embarrassing than funny, ditto Fabrice Luchini's ministry of silly walkisms, Binoche's fluttery warbling etc - all part of his perpertual confrontation with 'good taste', looking at things you wouldn't normally look at, showing things you're not meant to in films, making you feel uncomfortable, and making you think about why you feel uncomfortable - and how all that fits in with certain traditions of cinema (eg the cruelty of slapstick).

I finally watched Dawson City: Frozen Time last night, and Frantz the night before. Best 2017 movies I've seen in ages. Screener Season was wretched this year, someone in complete desperation even leaked the Louis CK movie! The Shape of Water one has just leaked but I have little enthusiasm for it.
― calzino, Sunday, 7 January 2018 20:56 (six years ago) link
I've found a subtitled rip of that last Wajda movie, Afterimage that I might watch tonight, but I think that is a 2016 one.

Janbal, Sieranevada & The Square, I think.
I think at least on the festival-front, 2017 was less exciting than earlier years. That is, Danish festivals (and Danish film) had an absolutely amazing year compared to usual, but that does not really change world film culture. Are we making a film poll this year? Because if so, I'll wait until then to make a longer list. But here's my Top 10 of Danish film:
1. Team Hurricane2. Winter Brothers3. Wolf & Sheep4. A Horrible Woman5. A Modern Man6. Venus: Let's Talk About Sex7. Denmark8. Darkland9. Their Finest10. 3 Things

There used to be a "year in cinema" thread every year. I usually post this question every summer hoping to get some recommendations for fun/shitty comedies or fun/shitty action movies although Film is cool too.
The last movies I saw were Moonlight and Get Out so I definitely need to catch up. Looking forward to Phantom Thread.

Out of the 10 or so movies I saw, I liked Get Out and Baby Driver. and Gerald's Game on netflix.
I pretty much gave up on American movies this year. If they're going to focus on action movies for kids then count me out. As much as I hate to say it, prestige TV is where it's at.
