I need to be thriftier in general, but there's a big difference between not owning lots of crap you don't need and refusing to invest in things that would easily prove their value, even if it's over time.

alvin noto (mh), Friday, 6 April 2018 15:04 (six years ago) link

There's definitely a thing where some people value money more than time which I am sometimes guilty of. Way too much time spent spent searching various websites or holding off on purchases just to ultimately save 10$ or so. There's always this feeling like you don't want to be ripped off, even if you have enough money to live comfortably, so you end up over-researching every purchase.

silverfish, Friday, 6 April 2018 15:29 (six years ago) link

Valuing money more than other considerations (including time) also comes out in more abstract ways. I had an old boss who counted how many post-its we were using. I think we would all have been better at our jobs (and made him more money) if we had been permitted to relax about the damn post-its. He had salespeople sharing hotel rooms; he scrutinized their 7-11 receipts. They groused about it all the time, and I'm sure it put them in a headspace that wasn't great for job performance.

One sometimes sees one of those Extreme Couponing show thingies where the family has a storage closet with 19 jugs of Drano and Rice-a-Roni and mouthwash - it was 75% off! - and I get sad, because either it will never be used, or those kids are going to be so fucking sick of Rice-a-Roni that they'll willingly drink the Drano.

Not to disparage anyone itt who practices austerity with good sense and perspective.

people that drive purely via memory. like roads/routes aren't going to change over time.

they just added a bike lane to the street outside my house (considering how many cyclists like to bike in the area, a noble idea). so they spent about a week or two converting the right lanes to bike lanes, with the protective poles and all, and then painted a huge-assed "right turn only" logo in the right lane at the intersection prior.

and already this morning, already saw two people who were going from muscle memory and not paying attention continue to go straight and plow right into the bike lane, and continue to keep driving as if they didn't notice the lane was too tiny to hold their car cos IT WAS A FUCKING BIKE LANE.

thinking our cyclists should give this one 6 months before they try it.

we have signs saying 'NEW ROAD LAYOUT AHEAD' but then they stay up for like two years and you're not sure if they've changed again

The one-way ends across the intersection from that car. I get what the city engineers are trying to point out to motorists, but clearly, the north side of Scott & Sixth is not a one-way.

Oo, the things I get so irrationally angry about.

i have a highschool friend who constantly posts landscape photos in portrait orientation on facebook so they’re always sideways.
if it’s my inlaws, or elderly relatives, i’ll cut them some slack.
but if you are under 45 there is no excuse for this kind of nonsense.

I only know of about six or eight browsers!

pplains, Saturday, 7 April 2018 20:57 (six years ago) link

Ha, you laugh but at work I use Firefox out of preference, chrome because a bunch of the work sites don't work in Firefox and SeaMonkey because it has (had) a built in irc client and we use irc for chat because it is still the 80s where I work.

(Also handy if you need to access more than one aws account at a time)

Google autocorrect now seems to do phrases or pairs of words rather than individual words. Not sure it's any better.

I had a letter misdelivered to my mailbox from the same number house on the next estate. Not sure if this is down to there being a new postman who isn't familiar with the area or what. I went to drop off the letter to the correct addressee and found out that there didn't seem to be a corresponding number for that estate. What I could see started at number 24, I wanted 6.
Finally found out that the correct address is in a small unit that appears to be part of the main road and doesn't have anything marking it as a continuation of the estate. Could see how it might have initially been supposed to be the beginning of the estate but that would be talking about original blueprint plans. Since when there has been a shopping area set up between the 2 parts of the estate.
This small unit is just a bit back from the main road with its own entrance way and nothing else connecting it to the estate it is numbered as part of.
I don't remember having seen any other letters for that address turning up here in the last 12 years. Just would have thought they might mark the unit that is that run of numbers instead of it looking like its part of the main road. Also letting new postal staff know that that was where those numbers were would be helpful. Wonder fi anybody else along here is as diligent about getting things to people. looked like it could be important though. & could be happening to anything addressed to that first run of 6.
So in short badly marked addresses that don't seem to be part of roads they are categorised with area pain.

This is hardly new or unusual, probably already discussed in this thread, but why the fuck does my phone auto-correct constantly change perfectly normal everyday words to something else? This happens all the damn time and makes zero sense, and makes me insane.

WARNING: This post contains references to female reproductive health matters. Also, the anger is not that irrational, but I don't know of any ILX threads for anger against health care as practiced in the United States.

I thought my periods were heavy before, but this morning I soaked through three of the heaviest tampons in 45 minutes each. The other day I dropped a couple blood clots the size of one of my fingers. I tried calling my gynecologist's office, but the doctor I saw last year is no longer there and the nurse was only able to suggest that I go to the emergency room. But realistically, what can they do in the short term? The nurse mentioned ultrasound, but last year they discovered small fibroids. I wanted to go with endometrial ablation, but I let myself be convinced to first try birth control pills (which didn't do anything noticeable to my period flows).

Polly of the Pre-Codes (j.lu), Friday, 13 April 2018 13:04 (six years ago) link

Planned Parenthood. I had to go to them somewhat recently because my gyno of a decade stopped taking my insurance (they actually did take it but not the "Obamacare" version, wtf). PP actually seemed up to date on the best guidelines for women than my gyno did. I kind of have bloodbaths like that too but if it's abnormal for you, you should see someone.

If I type 6 consequetive digits into a Google Keep document it treats it as a phone number, highlights it wrongly and makes changing it later twice as difficult (because it gives me a call / edit option)

705 / 713 is a phone number according to them when in reality it's just a fraction. ANSI standard dates also.

An annoyance I face every day is automated news. Specifically, I have to follow news regarding certain companies in connection with my job, and use google news alerts to track them. But my google news alert now gets clogged up with these bot-written pieces that are just like "Why You Should Consider Buying X Company Stock" or and then it just spits out a bunch of stats that it pulls from the stock performance or the company's financials. No actual news. Once in a while an actual news story gets pushed down by these too.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 19 April 2018 21:25 (six years ago) link

^^

Or bot sites that somehow update every single story to the current date each day. So if you're looking for news about Tyson Foods in the past 24 hours, why, some sites will have a whole plethora of news about Tyson Foods for you to enjoy.

For the third time in the 10 days he's been here new neighbor waits until after 9 to drill into the party wall.

It's summer and the windows are open. Which means opposite neighbour's scooter alarm isn't filtered out by the double glazing. Every time he sets or unsets it it sounds like aliens are launching some kind of laser attack.

Stop advertising computer keyboards as having "UK layout" when there's an @ symbol on the 2 key! Why would you even write "UK layout" in the advert?!
