my friend texted me and asked if he should tip a livery driver. I said yes just because i didn't want to admit i didn't know what a livery driver was

oh man, memmories of many misadventures in nyc gypsy cabs flooding back. tipping them is a must unless they try to rip you off.

Trying to find info on if/how much you tip the Peapod delivery dude; there is no consensus online. Does 10 percent of the order cost seem reasonable?

oh man this is why i would never order groceries. i eat beans and rice at home because it's cheap, coming up with the $60 minimum order PLUS delivery fee PLUS tip is going to have to wait until comfortable, lazy middle age.

I would like to know a) where you are living and b) how many people you are feeding with groceries that cost less than $60.

lex after a long, drunk meal i have no idea how to figure out splitting up between eight people + tip either, especially when one person's all "well i just had two vegetarian starters and only one drink so i don't think i should have to pay as much"

i don't tip less than 15% on anything unless the next increment is way higher, but i don't know what customs are like in the second city (and deliver my own groceries)

i only punch that person if it makes the math easier.

there is a calculator on every cell phone. if you don't want to look like a nerd, go to the john and figure it out. i don't have a problem looking like a nerd i guess.

xps - yea whenever i dine out w/ a big group i pretty much accept that i'm somehow gonna be paying a lot more than i should. somehow it always happens but it's kind of shitty to whine about it

It totally makes the math easier because the punched person is too busy going "OOOOOOOOOOW" to notice that you've dumped the entire tip on their credit card.

I have noticed some 12% 15% 20% handy calculations appear on the bottom of some restaurant bills recently.

honestly, I don't get how ppl have difficulty calculating 15%

guys if u cant figure out 15 or 20% in less than a second you shouldnt be allowed to buy ur own food

15% is really hard. i have to calculate 10% then halve it then remember to add the two together then check i've actually got the relevant change and then aargh

of course in ranty-type "add" really means "multiply"

and all you need to do to calculate 10% is move a decimal!

tipping hundreds of dollars on a bill that only goes into the tens is kind of hilarious, I sort of wish that would happen more often

I think I accidentally lost a $100 bill (tucked between two ones) last year in SF when I put down a tip at Mel's Diner.

That's not nearly as good as "well, the bill is $20, so the tip should be $300"

I'm MORONIC at math and I can move a decimal. I might have to pause and ask people to stop talking to me for 5 seconds, but it's perfectly do-able.

i just about always tip 20%, makes the math easier. plus i tend not to spend more than $20-$50 at a restaurant anyways so it's not like it's all that much more money

ANother thing is that my eating habits are pretty routine. If I drink and eat $27.45 worth of beer and pizza at a particular restaurant, it's probably going to be close to that number when I eat there again. So just remember what you paid last time.

(I do often eat at places that are too expensive, but I also tend to go out in groups of 4-5 so it sometimes balances out.)

Wait I thought that it was universally accepted that 20% on restaurant meals is the current standard? Lots of ppl are still doing 15%? Really?
