my friend texted me and asked if he should tip a livery driver. I said yes just because i didn't want to admit i didn't know what a livery driver was

μ-Fish (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 23 May 2009 06:06 (sixteen years ago)

oh man, memmories of many misadventures in nyc gypsy cabs flooding back. tipping them is a must unless they try to rip you off.

velko, Saturday, 23 May 2009 06:12 (sixteen years ago)

lool

also lol @ surmounter up there

man see united (k3vin k.), Saturday, 23 May 2009 06:14 (sixteen years ago)

Trying to find info on if/how much you tip the Peapod delivery dude; there is no consensus online. Does 10 percent of the order cost seem reasonable?

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 4 June 2009 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

yes

Obama seems to have the views of a 21-year-old Hispanic girl (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 June 2009 14:31 (sixteen years ago)

oh man this is why i would never order groceries. i eat beans and rice at home because it's cheap, coming up with the $60 minimum order PLUS delivery fee PLUS tip is going to have to wait until comfortable, lazy middle age.

Maria, Thursday, 4 June 2009 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

I would like to know a) where you are living and b) how many people you are feeding with groceries that cost less than $60.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 4 June 2009 16:01 (sixteen years ago)

lex after a long, drunk meal i have no idea how to figure out splitting up between eight people + tip either, especially when one person's all "well i just had two vegetarian starters and only one drink so i don't think i should have to pay as much"

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:12 (sixteen years ago)

that person usually gets punched

Obama seems to have the views of a 21-year-old Hispanic girl (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:13 (sixteen years ago)

i don't tip less than 15% on anything unless the next increment is way higher, but i don't know what customs are like in the second city (and deliver my own groceries)

Reggiano Jackson (gabbneb), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:18 (sixteen years ago)

i only punch that person if it makes the math easier.

xpost

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:18 (sixteen years ago)

there is a calculator on every cell phone. if you don't want to look like a nerd, go to the john and figure it out. i don't have a problem looking like a nerd i guess.

Swat Valley High (goole), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:19 (sixteen years ago)

me eitha

Surmounter, Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

xps - yea whenever i dine out w/ a big group i pretty much accept that i'm somehow gonna be paying a lot more than i should. somehow it always happens but it's kind of shitty to whine about it

mark cl, Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

ha dan otm

k3vin k., Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

It totally makes the math easier because the punched person is too busy going "OOOOOOOOOOW" to notice that you've dumped the entire tip on their credit card.

Obama seems to have the views of a 21-year-old Hispanic girl (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:21 (sixteen years ago)

I have noticed some 12% 15% 20% handy calculations appear on the bottom of some restaurant bills recently.

Prince of Persia (Ed), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

honestly, I don't get how ppl have difficulty calculating 15%

Obama seems to have the views of a 21-year-old Hispanic girl (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:23 (sixteen years ago)

guys if u cant figure out 15 or 20% in less than a second you shouldnt be allowed to buy ur own food

ha xp

k3vin k., Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:23 (sixteen years ago)

move a decimal point, add or divide by 2, add if appropriate

IT REALLY IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE, EVEN AFTER YOU HAVE DRUNK ALL THE BEERS

Obama seems to have the views of a 21-year-old Hispanic girl (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:25 (sixteen years ago)

15% is really hard. i have to calculate 10% then halve it then remember to add the two together then check i've actually got the relevant change and then aargh

lex pretend, Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:26 (sixteen years ago)

of course in ranty-type "add" really means "multiply"

Obama seems to have the views of a 21-year-old Hispanic girl (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:26 (sixteen years ago)

and all you need to do to calculate 10% is move a decimal!

Obama seems to have the views of a 21-year-old Hispanic girl (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:27 (sixteen years ago)

yes but WHICH WAY, is what my brain thinks when it's drunk

lex pretend, Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:27 (sixteen years ago)

10% is really easy but 15% would take me a while if drunk.

languid samuel l. jackson (jim), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:28 (sixteen years ago)

Bill is $153.57, 10% is $15.36 OMG FEAR MY MATH SKILLZ

wait half that is $7.68 add them together = $23 tip HOLY SHIT, A GENIUS

xp: hahaha okay lex, I do actually have some sympathy for that but really, if your tip ends up being larger than the bill it's a good bet that you've done it wrong

Obama seems to have the views of a 21-year-old Hispanic girl (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:29 (sixteen years ago)

lex, louis is your only rival in the ability to blithely make posts that make yourself look bad

yes but WHICH WAY, is what my brain thinks when it's drunk

― lex pretend, Thursday, June 4, 2009 1:27 PM (2 minutes ago)

hahahaah lex i wanna go out with you and convince you to tip six hundred dollars on a $60 bill

k3vin k., Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:31 (sixteen years ago)

if 60 was 960

Reggiano Jackson (gabbneb), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:32 (sixteen years ago)

huh

... some people aren't good at math, it's not really that weird

Surmounter, Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:35 (sixteen years ago)

I'm not just talking about this thread.

resistance is feudal (WmC), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:35 (sixteen years ago)

oh. i love lex. that's all.

Surmounter, Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

tipping hundreds of dollars on a bill that only goes into the tens is kind of hilarious, I sort of wish that would happen more often

Obama seems to have the views of a 21-year-old Hispanic girl (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

I think I accidentally lost a $100 bill (tucked between two ones) last year in SF when I put down a tip at Mel's Diner.

resistance is feudal (WmC), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:47 (sixteen years ago)

That's not nearly as good as "well, the bill is $20, so the tip should be $300"

Obama seems to have the views of a 21-year-old Hispanic girl (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:54 (sixteen years ago)

Nice of you to say...it felt really stupid at the time, plus I was sober.

resistance is feudal (WmC), Thursday, 4 June 2009 17:58 (sixteen years ago)

I'm MORONIC at math and I can move a decimal. I might have to pause and ask people to stop talking to me for 5 seconds, but it's perfectly do-able.

But not someone who should be dead anyway (Laurel), Thursday, 4 June 2009 18:02 (sixteen years ago)

i just about always tip 20%, makes the math easier. plus i tend not to spend more than $20-$50 at a restaurant anyways so it's not like it's all that much more money

mark cl, Thursday, 4 June 2009 18:03 (sixteen years ago)

Bill is $153.57, 10% is $15.36 OMG FEAR MY MATH SKILLZ

Yow, Hi Dere eats out at some ritzy places.

ANother thing is that my eating habits are pretty routine. If I drink and eat $27.45 worth of beer and pizza at a particular restaurant, it's probably going to be close to that number when I eat there again. So just remember what you paid last time.

···◊··· (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 4 June 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

(I do often eat at places that are too expensive, but I also tend to go out in groups of 4-5 so it sometimes balances out.)

Obama seems to have the views of a 21-year-old Hispanic girl (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 June 2009 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

Wait I thought that it was universally accepted that 20% on restaurant meals is the current standard? Lots of ppl are still doing 15%? Really?

quincie, Thursday, 4 June 2009 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

oh god I just waded into a tipping thread--wtf is wrong with me?

quincie, Thursday, 4 June 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

15% vs 20% is one of the regular fights I have with my wife

Obama seems to have the views of a 21-year-old Hispanic girl (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 June 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

i always do 20

Mr. Que, Thursday, 4 June 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

unless the waiter vomits in my lap

Mr. Que, Thursday, 4 June 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)

You have to pay extra for vomit.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 4 June 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

right, if there's vomit involved i do at least 30

Mr. Que, Thursday, 4 June 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

i like 17.5%

Surmounter, Thursday, 4 June 2009 19:16 (sixteen years ago)

^^^^ this def starts wandering into "fuck it, too much work" territory
