The film also introduces Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau, one of Carol’s oldest friends. She’s a top-notch Air Force pilot with the call sign “Photon,” and she’s also a single mother to a young daughter.

It must be so hard to act in these sorts of movies, with rubber suits on and dots on a soundstage in front of a screen, etc.. As an actor, you just have no idea until you see it all put together. You're saying the dumbest stuff and then going pew pew with your fingers and you just have to trust that when the CG magic and music and other stuff kicks in it'll look cool. You'd think that's a lot of pressure on both actor *and* director, but after decades of this they seem to have the rhythm down. Still, it's a miracle it works as often as it does.

Obviously acting is playing pretend, but it's a relatively recent phenomenon to have characters defined by CG embellishments. I would love to see a Brechtian superhero movie, with superheroes literally going through the motions but with no effects, just pointing their fingers intensely at invisible enemies.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:02 (five years ago) link
so basically Dogville with superpowers

xpost An entirely improvised movie with invisible sets and costumes and props could be funny too. (If it were funny.) Or exhausting.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:03 (five years ago) link
Yeah, Dogville with superpowers.
Just long stretches of people reacting in awe to nothing, then defending themselves by wiggling their fingers with a serious look on their face.

Why not just film a bunch of kids playing superheroes in a schoolyard? Same effect.
― grawlix (unperson), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:10 (five years ago) link
they generally are not oscar-winning actors. I guess the obvious follow-up question is, would oscar-winning actors play pretend superhero in their backyards any better than kids?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:13 (five years ago) link
Playing a superhero should automatically disqualify you from future Oscar nomination.

When I saw that (totally average) Ant-man sequel with Michelle Pfeiffer, then Annette Bening in this trailer, not to mention Jude Law, or youthified Sam Jackson, or Michael Douglas, it occurred to me that within a few years virtually every actor of note or otherwise will have been in a superhero movie. God knows, they might all end up in the same superhero movie at once. Someone should devise a predictive mathematical formula that will lead us to the superhero singularity.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:25 (five years ago) link

i hope she gets to continue being a person out of time, like a captain america who got frozen in the early 90s and is struggling with the idea of pearl jam being played on classic rock stations. back in the late 90s in my high school comics i had this running idea of a lost predecessor high school that got sealed away in the depths back in 1991. even back then that era seemed super removed (tho of course this has a lot to do with being 18) so there could be a lot of comedy there. as a superhero she has this dope costume, by day she's wearing hypercolor looney tunes jerseys or w/e. but that would require more commitment to the idea of period style than we saw in this movie, which doesn't even bother to give the extras 90s haircuts. the "grunge outfit" gag barely even registered.

Cosi was a bit of a wank tbh
He dresses like that and carries a hammer because of he's the commander of a special strike force called the Accusers. And he was working with Thanos because Thanos gave him an Infinity Stone which helped him push his own political agenda. All of this was explained in the GotG movie and this one, you don't need any knowledge of the comic book Ronan
also, Josh, I saw the first Guardians twice and the second one once and the entirety of my thought process when he turned up was "oh it's that guy that Danny Hellman made jokes about some poster on the old TCJ messageboard who worked at FBI having the same name as, and... he... works for the big space-god-monster in these or something. Or maybe not yet? w/e, bad guy."
