Whoa! I thought for sure that Dudes were eliminated because I thought I saw one of them talking about going home! It was sweeeet seeing them SMOKE Ray during the footrace. I originally didn't like them and their Neander-brows, but then they pull some drama like this and are actually pretty funny sometimes.

As for Rambah: Amber is completely riding on Rob's coattails. Rob remains mad skillz; saying that Meredith pushed Gretchen down in the caves!! As for not slowing down, he saw that there were two teams there and thus knew that whoever had overturned did have some help; if there was only that single team, then slowing down to yell out the window would've been appropriate -- which, mind, is what the other teams did.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 21:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Is anyone else hoping that next week's episode feature Alex snapping and slamming Alex's head repeatedly in a car door?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 13:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Did anyone else notice that everyone kept calling the goats "him" and "he" even as they were squeezing milk from the teats?

Huk-L, Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:00 (nineteen years ago) link

All goats are male. Also, by induction, we can prove that everyone thinks Gretchen is a goat.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:02 (nineteen years ago) link

You mean Lynn, Dan? He is a racist ass.

Leon WK (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Now Uchenna and Joyce are the only racers that I don't completely hate.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, the second "Alex" should be "Lynn", or as I now like to think of him, "That Doughy Waste Of Space Who Should Be Beaten With Tire Irons Until He Bleeds From His Eyes, Preferably By His Infinitely-More-Likable Boyfriend As That Would Satisfy My Sense Of Dramatic Irony".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Gretchen was getting on my nerves a little bit but she and Meredith really kick ass and are far and away the toughest older couple to ever appear on the show (no one can compare to the previous two seasons' oldsters, though). Gretchen is made of iron and, screechy voice aside, I'm kind of in awe of her.

I just can't hate Rob and Amber! I see exactly why I should, but I can't do it; they're too good at both the tasks and manipulating the other players.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah. But then Uchenna basically said the same thing. Though he put it in a much more more palatable way, and he said it more because of his family than the colour of his skin.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:13 (nineteen years ago) link

There's a gigantic and obvious semantic difference between "I can do this; I've seen people do this hundreds of times" and "They can balance things on their heads because they were born to do it; we weren't".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say.
I was more impressed that Uchenna did it so well because he's a man, and that's traditionally something done by women, who I always thought had a better sense of balance because of their curves and stuff. But I guess having seen it done hundreds of times trumps having curves.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I was sooooooo hoping the brothers wouldn't get eliminated and would have to go through the next leg of the race in their swim trunks and ridiculous hats.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:27 (nineteen years ago) link

I was sad they had to be eliminated, but I guess they must have really fucked up their directions when they left for the detour.

Leon WK (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:29 (nineteen years ago) link

am i the only one who thought that the balancing thing didn't look as hard as all the quitters made it seem? uchenna was totally otm - "just think about the water". i like that couple more and more every week. too bad about the brothers. they proved to be likable idiots in the end, like hello, you're in a race, why the hell are you stopping for a warddrobe change? also, i'm glad army guy and pageant girl are fighting, they seem a little less dauntingly all-american. also, how meredith and gretchen continue to place is one of the great mysteries of the world - they look completely lost out there.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:32 (nineteen years ago) link

also, how meredith and gretchen continue to place is one of the great mysteries of the world

It's because GRETCHEN IS MADE OF IRON!

My favorite moment with them was when Gretchen kept going "HURRY HURRY HURRY" and Meredith finally said, "Geez, would you cut me some slack?" and she said, "Okay" and SAT BACK AND SHUT UP! That moment showed A) they've really been together for a really long time and know each other inside and out; B) there's a simultaneous sense of comfortableness and respect for each other; C) they are really equals in their relationship despite the way Gretchen's extroversion and Meredith's introversion might make you think that G dominates.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:38 (nineteen years ago) link

OTM

When will the other teammates get it through their heads that it doesn't help to yell "hurry hurry" at the person doing the roadblock? So much time is lost every season with one person asking the other to just shut up.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:40 (nineteen years ago) link

i keep waiting for meredith to mumble something about the government, or perry como, or his slippers. but you're right, i guess the two of them do have that well-worn dynamic. it's just that they never seem to do anything particularly quickly; half the time they don't even do it CORRECTLY, i'm shocked that they've outlasted all the teams they have.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:46 (nineteen years ago) link

They will need to get a Fast Forward in order to win the race because they just aren't outrunning anyone, but they do rebound from mistakes remarkably quickly, moreso than oldsters past.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Rob and Amber are the greatest thing ever. When they passed the wrecked car last week, they moved into the pantheon of great reality characters.

M & G are unstoppable. I still am reeling from all the blood on Gretch's face last week. That was so awesome.

U & J are the only likeable ones, but they're also completely boring.

L & A are really irritating, but very entertaining nonetheless. When Lynn called that random black guy 'Tupac', he earned a special place in my cold, black heart.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 15:06 (nineteen years ago) link

so is everyone actually gonna watch the recap/outtakes episode? i kinda wish there was a whole behind-the-scenes episode after every race. i feel like we miss so much good stuff.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 15:32 (nineteen years ago) link

They usually have some good extra footage on the amazing race site, but I haven't checked it out in awhile.

Leon WK (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 16:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm probably going to watch the recap, 'cause I missed this show until last week & now I'm kind of obsessed with it. I think R & A will win.. Lynn & Alex were *slightly* less annoying this week. Prom Queen really crossed a line calling the guy a redneck & etc., I bet they keep fighting from now on.

I'm sad to see the brothers go! They looked like A.R.E. Weapons out there.

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 17:35 (nineteen years ago) link

*AHEM* I believe we have some episodes to discuss. i am officially sick of the oldies. i mean, i was before, but i can't take her voice anymore. they are excruciating to watch. "we had a bad elephant". yeah, that was the problem. headshaving=classic. and 9 times out of 10, americans of african descent always look great bald. she really didn't have anything to worry about. plus, that hair was looking kinda raggedy anyway.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 13:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Hahaha "kinda raggedy" is a massive understatement!

I love the oldsters. I love that Meredith is on the verge of completely losing his shit at all times and Gretchen is all, "Well, this sucks that we're being all shouty at each other; NOW MOVE IT!!!!!!!!" I love that Gretchen climbed into the elephant for no discernable reason. I love that they beat out yet another fucking stupid couple (oh Lynn, how do I hate thee? Let me count the ways: 1) You are a douche. 2) You are a shitbag. 3) You are a mouth-breathing Neanderthal. 4) Haha "I could eat my face cream" YOU ARE SUCH A WITTY FUCKO argh. 5) etc etc).

I want to give Joyce many hugs. Oh yes.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 13:52 (nineteen years ago) link

it's that mr. magoo quality that makes me cringe. but who knows, the luck of the punch-drunk could end up winning it for them. i mean, i am impressed that they are still there, it's just that when they do stuff like CLIMB ON TOP OF A WOODEN ELEPHANT FOR NO REASON, i keep waiting for the blood to flow.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 13:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I was waiting for Gretchen to fall when she got off the elephant. Ohhhh deeeear.

I wish they would have given Joyce a trip or a car or something for being first (and .. for shaving her head.)

Rob is benig a cunt unnecessarily. The train doesn't leave for 5 hours. And when POW asked him what's the deal, Rob says, "You'll find out." Just tell him, ya prick.

diedre mousedropping (Dave225), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 13:59 (nineteen years ago) link

It would have been awesome if Gretchen had fallen off and had the elephant run over her, because she would have shouted "Meredith, I'm fine! Just pick up my legs and go! PUSH THAT ELEPHANT I COMMAND THEE BY ALL THE UNHOLY POWERS OF MY LORD BEELZEBUB!!!!" and then she would have spit brimstone and melted the flesh off the bones of the kids helping them push the elephant and Meredith would have said "GRETCHEN STOP COLLECTING SOULS FOR SATAN AND HELP ME PUSH THIS THING!!!" and Gretchen would have said "okay" and stopped spinning her head all the way around.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:00 (nineteen years ago) link

My husband is hoping that Meredith and Gretchen get eliminated next or else he is planning to stab himself in the eardrums if he has to hear more of her screeching. She was so annoying in this episode, Meredith must have the patience of a saint not to completely lose it with her.

I still can't believe Kelly telling Ron that he quit/took the easy way out of the army by becoming a POW.

Leon Future Coffee (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, because being a former pageant winner is so hard.
I think Joyce looks great with her head shaved!

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:47 (nineteen years ago) link

What did Phil say to Meredith and Gretchen at the pit stop? My cable cut out for about five seconds and I missed it (something about being the oldest couple to ever make it to the final four?)

The ride is over for M&G now, as all the douchey teams are gone, and they'll need some seriously crazy luck to eliminate one of the remaining three. Dan, you called the final three about six weeks ago -- nice job!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I was surprised Meredith didn't tell Gretchen to blow kisses. That seems to be his normal answer.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:54 (nineteen years ago) link

He said they were the oldest couple to make it that far.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I really hope that POW and beauty queen bite it soon. I bet some of their winnings would go to the GOP.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 15:03 (nineteen years ago) link

"Beauty."

Organized Crime (Leee), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I still can't believe Kelly telling Ron that he quit/took the easy way out of the army by becoming a POW.

I couldn't believe my ears when I heard that. I know the camera guy hurt himself trying to restrain his deafening shout of "THANK YOU, JESUS!" when he got that on tape.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:16 (nineteen years ago) link

OMG I'm so sad I missed this last night! Joyce shaved her head, huh? That's FINE with me, she was looking like that freaky bitch from The Dark Crystal that gave the gelfling the crystal shard.

I used to love M&G, until that one thing involving the 600+ metal boxes with clues in only 5 or whatever. Gretchen just kept LOOKING AROUND and COMPLAINING, I kept waiting for Meredith to lose his cool and be like "OPEN BOX ONE, QUEEN OF THE HARPIES!". Actually, I think I've been waiting for him to lose his cool since day 1, and he really hasn't.

I can't believe Lois Lane said that to GI Joe!

"UCHENNA, THE CLUE, IT'S OVER HERE!"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Joyce looked really great without her hair, she shouldn't have worried about it at all.

Kelly is the plainest "beauty queen" they've had on the show. I really have to wonder how she won anything, because it's not as though she has a great personality either.

Leon Future Coffee (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:27 (nineteen years ago) link

I imagine Ron gingerly landing his helicopter in enemy territory, strolling up to an Iraqi soldier and saying "Hey, take me as your prisoner. This military commitment thing is just not working out for me." Definitely the easiest way to get out of the army.

Rebekkah (burntbrat), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I still can't believe Kelly telling Ron that he quit/took the easy way out of the army by becoming a POW.

See it's gems like these that I miss when the idjit behind me's making unwise cracks Gretchen on top of the elephant, say.

Organized Crime (Leee), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:18 (nineteen years ago) link

"See it's gems like these that I miss"

you didn't actually miss it. it was shown on the preview for next week's show.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Median salaries of the current batch of racers broken down by job description. You will never guess who makes the most money.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 22 April 2005 11:59 (nineteen years ago) link

You're right, I would have never guessed. What is she doing with a loser like Ray? For reals...

Leon Future Coffee (Ex Leon), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:07 (nineteen years ago) link

She's half his age and makes three times his salary, so the only answer I can see is SEXUAL WUNDERKIND. Which, based on televisual evidence, makes absolutely no sense.

Either that or she is full of snakes.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Looks like it might be: MEREDITH - Corporate Executive.

Those salary guidelines have a pretty big possibility of error, since the contestants probably inflated their job titles somewhat. Marketing Executive in Youngstown? .. She sells phones at a kiosk in the old Dairy Queen.

diedre mousedropping (Dave225), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Deana's median salary is $14K higher than Meredith's! Not that I would sneeze at either's.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:16 (nineteen years ago) link

(I do see your point, though.)

I do like the Amazing Race pin Television Without Pity is selling:
