what a fucking shiter, also my boyfriend is working about fifty metres away in the ABC tonight and not replying to texts
(I assume he will be fine but you never can get a reply quick enough at times like this)
― boxedjoy, Friday, 15 June 2018 23:39 (six years ago) link
Came past there about an hour ago. The fire is huge. ;_;
― calumerio, Saturday, 16 June 2018 00:01 (six years ago) link
Came past the abc too - it looked fine xpost
― calumerio, Saturday, 16 June 2018 00:02 (six years ago) link
That's a relief. I assume if there was any danger etc they would have been punted out. I hope everyone is ok and I haven't seen any news of casualties yet which bodes as well as these things can
― boxedjoy, Saturday, 16 June 2018 00:04 (six years ago) link
Was just about to ask... did you manage to get hold of him boxedjoy? I assume they've evacuated the immediate area, though I guess that may not be an entirely straightforward process at midnight on a Friday.
― brain (krakow), Saturday, 16 June 2018 00:05 (six years ago) link
Still nothing yet. I know i'm just being dramatic but even though i want to go to bed (working at 9am tomorrow eek) I know i won't sleep til I get an update
― boxedjoy, Saturday, 16 June 2018 00:15 (six years ago) link
he was evacuated early and quickly and his phone and bag were left behind which is why he hadn't replied. So thankful this morning!

Holy fuck, how could it happen for a second time. Isn’t the degree show on just now.

Renovations and roofing work seem to cause a lot of fires, but how exactly = ?
― StanM, Saturday, 16 June 2018 05:49 (six years ago) link
this is so fuckin sad
― CARL MARKS PRINCIPAL INVESTING AND ADVISORY SERVICES (bizarro gazzara), Saturday, 16 June 2018 06:03 (six years ago) link
Rotten news to wake up to. Second big fire in the city centre within a matter of months :-(
― Ward Fowler, Saturday, 16 June 2018 06:09 (six years ago) link
oh shit that's very sad, rip iconic CRM building :(
― calzino, Saturday, 16 June 2018 07:34 (six years ago) link
"Renovations and roofing work seem to cause a lot of fires, but how exactly = ?"
Was just listening to a report that the builders renovating the roof had to relearn 100 year old roofing techniques, but I'd presume this wouldn't include forsaking all modern fire safety regs as well.
― calzino, Saturday, 16 June 2018 07:51 (six years ago) link
Glad to hear that he was safe, boxedjoy.
Does anyone know how things are this morning? There's a few photos from earlier today in this Guardian 'In Pictures' piece, but it's hard to really tell: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/gallery/2018/jun/16/flames-spread-through-glasgow-school-of-art-in-scotland-in-pictures

OK, here's my answer, from police helicopter... awful.

― ||||||||, Saturday, 16 June 2018 09:26 (six years ago) link
This is crazy + wtf. It's like Glasgow's gone back to the 70s, when the whole place was constantly catching fire.

jesus christ that picture
― CARL MARKS PRINCIPAL INVESTING AND ADVISORY SERVICES (bizarro gazzara), Saturday, 16 June 2018 09:53 (six years ago) link
There's a very well established theory that links all these together with planning permission denial and the plan to bulldoze all of central Glasgow and build it all again. Interestingly the School of Art was one of the properties to be demolished in the Bruce Report.
― Bimlo Horsewagon became Wheelbarrow Horseflesh (aldo), Saturday, 16 June 2018 11:37 (six years ago) link
Part of Sauchiehall St is already closed off because of the previous fire, and for the last few months they've been digging parts of it up, so the whole area is going to be in a right old state for months and months.
Got a text from a friend who teaches at the Art School -
"It's unbelievable! Thankfully no-one hurt and no student work destroyed, just 20 to 30 million wasted on refurb over the next few years".
― Ward Fowler, Saturday, 16 June 2018 15:09 (six years ago) link
refurb??

If it's even possible I'd imagine the sum would be considerably larger.
― Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Saturday, 16 June 2018 15:22 (six years ago) link
Alan Dunlop, the school’s professor of architecture, said: “I can’t see any restoration possible for the building itself. It looks totally destroyed.”

This theory about building new housing ties in nicely with the absurd closure of The Arches
― boxedjoy, Saturday, 16 June 2018 22:42 (six years ago) link
I think my friend is talking about the work done on the building after the 2014 fire. And yes, the papers today are talking about £100m to rebuild this time round - so it's a goner :-(
― Ward Fowler, Monday, 18 June 2018 08:05 (six years ago) link
what happens to all the students who were at various points of their particular courses at GSoA? That would seem like an additionally expensive clusterfuck to sort out.
― calzino, Monday, 18 June 2018 08:19 (six years ago) link
I imagine lots of their work has been reduced to ash and while that may stretch some ppl's sense of "oh the humanity" :p, but still it's an absolute fucker.
― calzino, Monday, 18 June 2018 08:24 (six years ago) link
not to mention all the staff whose working lives are in chaos right now
― boxedjoy, Monday, 18 June 2018 08:29 (six years ago) link
Were any staff/students actually working out of the Mackintosh building? I thought they'd all been relocated while the refurbishment took place.
― Ward Fowler, Monday, 18 June 2018 08:41 (six years ago) link
ah right, I thought they might have still been using part of the building. I was talking to an Auntie about this last night, and she had a booze/phet assisted nervous breakdown during her fine art degree. And she was saying if her work had been destroyed it would have tipped her over the edge.
― calzino, Monday, 18 June 2018 09:23 (six years ago) link
Makes me sick to the pit of my stomach just thinking about it.
Also, RIP giant glitterball in the ABC. Fair fucks to the Garage for managing to put Saturday night's Belly gig on at very short notice. The ABC, while not as much of a touchstone as the Mackintosh building, is one of the best gig venues in Glasgow, and I have fond memories of it as a cinema where I went on some terrible dates when I first moved down here. There's a great piece on Facebook by the Lost Glasgow guy about its history as a circus and general house of awesome entertainment back in the day.

I'm going up there at the weekend, at least my mum can't moan about the terrible weather for a change - or can she?
― Alan Alba (Tom D.), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 23:39 (six years ago) link
i literally cannae remember it being in the 30s in glasgow ever - though i understand we had similar weather in 1995 - this seems to have slipped my mind - and 1975. the latter summer was the first summer my dad arrived in glasgow from chile. he thought "this weather is no bad, quite like home" and then has complained about shitey summers for 40 plus years hence
