I just found out that the local LIDL and therefore probably other branches differentiate between a cash register being shown to be open and closed by the same intensity light in the same place showing as either red or green. I hadn't realised they were supposed to be visibly different until the girl on the till of a closed one pointed to a light to show me that it was supposed to be closed today. Not sure if it's down to my eyes or if it is as completely interchangeable looking to other people, especially in the neon light of the supermarket. Would think they might have arrived at so0mething more immediately differentiable. I had to look at the on light and the off light closely to be able to see a difference.
& if i am colourblind i don't think it's in a rare way. Just seems to be a stupid idea to go around doing things that way.
Would think that it would be more noticeable if they switched the light off instead of having a similar shade of a colour that looks pretty similar be the differentiation.bah humbug.

To clarify, this is a recent set up where to tell customers not to join the end of a queue for a checkout till the shop has come up with a system where the change the colour of light on a transparent piece of glass with the till number on. The light shines through this number which is suspended somewhere above the conveyor belt. The colour of light is most visible down the side of the pain of glass i.e. the however many millimetre wide thicjkness between the two sides of the pane of glass/plastic. Difference mainly seems to be in hue since object, brightness etc are all the same. & as a signifier it seems way too close.
I'm wondering if it is my eyes but don't think it could be a thing that I would be alone in differentiating. Found it odd that a checkout girl was pointing to a lit light and expecting me to see it as obviously different to another lit light of a very similar shade.
& would have thought that things like simple colour blindness would be a consideration in designing a thing like this and they would add another element. As it is you are looking at a see through pane with a light somewhere around it so you are seeing straight through it. & it is below whatever other neon light the shop is lit with. None of which helps tell the slight difference between the 2 supposedly distinct options.

ime it appears often not to be taken into consideration. Red/green lights in the same place (LEDs on various devices come to mind) are usually more or less indistinguishable and thus quite useless to me. It does sound like you may have some colour vision deficiency (and red/green is the most garden-variety of them all), except it seems a bit strange that you haven't noticed it in any other context before.
The shades of red/green used for traffic signals most places I've been are an exception; these are not easily confused even to me (plus it probably also helps that the red and green are in different positions).
― anatol_merklich, Monday, 3 September 2018 07:21 (six years ago) link
Here's an online test for colour vision deficiency. It identified me as a "strong deutan", which seems right. ("Deutans are people with deuteranomaly, a type of red-green color blindness in which the green cones do not detect enough green and are too sensitive to yellows, oranges, and reds.")
― anatol_merklich, Monday, 3 September 2018 07:26 (six years ago) link
I think the difference is clearer when you get closer to the sign. But from a distance they look very similar. & the sign is mainly supposed to be read from a distance so that people don't approach the end of the conveyor belt leading to the till.
Not 100% sure but it seems like you need to see the edge of the pane to see the difference. So seems like it's only really visible half way down the line. So doing the job of showing that an aisle is closing doesn't work. & only really shows when there is nobody on the queue whatever. & then they probably close the gate when the checkout girl goes anyway.
Ho hum.

moderate protan here Protans are people with protanomaly, a type of red-green color blindness in which the red cones do not detect enough red and are too sensitive to greens, yellows, and oranges. As a result, greens, yellows, oranges, reds, and browns may appear similar, especially in low light. It can also be difficult to tell the difference between blues and purples, or pinks and grays.feel p accurate, i’ve always felt like my colorblindness was more tonal than just flat out not seeing certain colors.nothing more disappointing than buying a pair of rad brown pants & finding out later from friends that they are green. just ~knowing~ that they were green even if i didn’t see it bummed me out lol

checkstand light should just be green when open & OFF when closed. wasting time illuminating a checkstand light to be red when it’s closed seems dumb. ...also my indignation may be borne of colorblindess solidarity :D

― koogs, Monday, 3 September 2018 21:27 (six years ago) link
with the red/green light thing.I think the main signal is that it is becoming closed (in the process of becoming so, i.e. when the customers that are already in the existing line are served the checkout girl can close the till) so is supposed to indicate that nobody new joins the end of the line. So subsequently I don't think it fits the job.Had somebody else say its visible but people ignore it. Which I would be more inclined to think of as it doesn't work well for enough people. So would assume it isn't a visible sign for a lot of people.
― Stevolende, Monday, 3 September 2018 21:29 (six years ago) link
Hi fellow colour-blindees, I think they designed the shades of traffic lights especially so even strong protans (like me) or deutans can distinguish them easily, I still was barred from driving in China though, so only was able to take my test in the UK this year, aged 38.Weak red lights spelling things out in bright sunlight, though, can anyone see those? This meant all of the buses in one place I lived. I basically just don't notice colour, it isn't memorable and doesn't stand out except horrible neon yellow, so I hate anything colour-coded, and will make all documents greyscale if given the chance. Most annoying thing though is inability to see if bananas are ripe or if meat is cooked.

Another annoyance from the same lidl supermarket yesterday. Somebody had dropped what looked like yoghurt on the floor and people were walking through it. So I looked for a staff member before I went to the checkout till. Couldn't see one which is annoying enough in itself. I had to walk the length of the store to get to the till and didn't see anyone.Told the checkout guy who I thought might relay the message through his headset. Didn't seem to. I asked if he was going to be able to tell anybody about it. So there was probably a growing sticky patch up where carts and feet had gone through this slop.Yuck

My UK supermarket gripe is that the cashiers in Aldi scan things much more quickly than anyone can pack them. I have figured out that the only thing you can do is load them back into the trolley and pack them afterwards, but nobody will tell you this.

Eh, that's what you're supposed to do! The deal with ALDI and LIDL is that they have fewer staff and so longer queues, but between canny line hopping as tills open and close and the amazing speed of the cashiers, you get out much quicker than you'd expect. People who go into these places thinking they can just stand around packing before paying like in other places drive their fellow customers up the wall. You slap all your shopping back into the trolley/basket and take it to the ledge across from the tills to finish off.
― Eyeball Kicks, Tuesday, 4 September 2018 11:46 (six years ago) link
IIRC Lidl forces you to pack them afterwards is by having a very short, almost non-existent extension of the conveyer belt for after your products are scanned. The more expensive the supermarket, the longer the extension of the belt after the till, so you can pack in with ease. This is a luxury you pay for.
