My 8th grade was a big improvement on my 7th grade.

faculty w1fe (silby), Wednesday, 26 September 2018 03:01 (six years ago) link

in my limited experience, that is an extremely low bar

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 03:12 (six years ago) link

Dmac TT (darraghmac), Wednesday, 26 September 2018 03:37 (six years ago) link

seriously
8th grade gave me a preview of what i could expect from high school and what i saw was not super great

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 26 September 2018 03:39 (six years ago) link

I can def relate to being scared in 8th grade.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Wednesday, 26 September 2018 03:54 (six years ago) link

I'm sorry La Lechera

I try now to make non sexual versions of it but I can see that those aren't necessarily any better

I'M GONNA TRY POSTING SOMETHING ELSE
A POST THAT WON'T REPEL

thank you :)
that's a charming rhyme -- else/repel is a clever rhyme!

THAT'S A CHARMING RHYME
ELSE/REPEL IS A CLEVER RHYME

Alfred should have an academic sinecure teaching rhetoric at, like, Harvard imho

- de l'asshole (flopson), Saturday, May 28, 2016

Update: this is happened, only not at Harvard.

well, damn if that's not the nicest thing I've heard today. thank you.

A is for (Aimless), Saturday, 15 December 2018 01:11 (five years ago) link

I concur. Most of us have done our part to earn the flak we receive 'round these parts, but I'm always baffled when people take aim at Aimless.

Home Despot (Old Lunch), Saturday, 15 December 2018 01:37 (five years ago) link

Aimless fan here.

valet doberman (Jon not Jon), Saturday, 15 December 2018 01:49 (five years ago) link

sometimes i start reading a post and it has a kind of regular talking plain guy just saying some reasonable stuff tone and i immediately think it's an aimless post and it never disappoints it always is and sometimes this immediate recognition is amusing and sometimes it's annoying bc it makes me feel like i'm being lectured about something i already know. but lots of ppl don't know anything at all about anything so for them it's probably useful material.

Mordy, Saturday, 15 December 2018 01:53 (five years ago) link

like you see sometimes people have different tastes in styles of communication and some people like a more complex idea presented in a more compelling tone and some people like more straight forward homespun wisdom and sometimes people in one group may not understand what the people in the other group are seeing because perspectives are complex and we all see things from our own point of view. a nine to me could look like a six to you. and so it's best to be kind by recognizing our own limitations in seeing another perspective.

Mordy, Saturday, 15 December 2018 01:55 (five years ago) link

Mordy I've really been appreciating your posts on the Amazing News From The Natural World thread, thanks

Dan S, Saturday, 15 December 2018 02:25 (five years ago) link

mordy thank u for that post. ive been thinking about this a ton in my own life lately:

sometimes people in one group may not understand what the people in the other group are seeing because perspectives are complex and we all see things from our own point of view. a nine to me could look like a six to you. and so it's best to be kind by recognizing our own limitations in seeing another perspective”

engendering a kind of fundamental humility, I guess. like what the fuck do i know? someone posted in the masculinity thread something like “it must be nice to feel so sure of things” and it got lost in the thread but it resonated with me.

there are a lot of different kinds of people in the world, and people are complex, difference exists I remind myself all the time and it helps me to be a compassionate person and less concerned with having right or wrong opinions and beliefs

marcos, Saturday, 15 December 2018 03:32 (five years ago) link

great thread today

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 15 December 2018 06:02 (five years ago) link

I'll add my voice to the chorus of Aimless praise.

That said, as a follow-up to what Mordy said, what strikes us as common sense or an attempt at understanding the topic at hand from a reasonable angle may be construed as covert ideology. It goes without saying that I don't believe that to be the case in this instance (or it's an ideology I agree with), but I'm afraid his efforts ultimately did very little to bridge the communication gap, which is somewhat tragic.

Yeah, that was an (unsurprisingly) underrated comment. I think it was FernandoHierro.

pomenitul, Saturday, 15 December 2018 10:02 (five years ago) link

yes it was thank you! I had trouble finding it

marcos, Saturday, 15 December 2018 12:04 (five years ago) link

I don't think there's a poster on here whose tone doesn't rub me wrong at one time or another, but I'm at the top of that list. The flip side of that is that everybody here who isn't a full-time shithead is capable of warmth, insight and lulz. So just like irl people really.

no no I know!

hope Saturday isn't so Blue - certainly what with the Wolves being pleasant upon the eye there's a boon, likewise I am excited for Charlton's home game. wonder if football's inventors knew what they'd be doing for the culture

In a warm pub on a Saturday afternoon with sport on and vile gammony banter all around is one of the great Christmas pleasures

I’m just back from work and just pre-Xmas shopping, having a black ipa by myself in a warm pub. No sport, jazz on the speakers, and if there are racist banter merchants anywhere I don’t want to know about it. I’m much happier shooting the shit with you idiots thanks

Very well said, NV. One can gauge my affection for ILX/ILXors by my assiduous avoidance of most other gatherings of two or more people.

i'm sad about (and probably partly responsible for) what happened to the most recent masculinity thread revive but silby's posts to that thread were super inspiring and have helped me dealing with some of the stuff i'm going through that i don't necessarily know how to talk about

errang (rushomancy), Saturday, 15 December 2018 15:45 (five years ago) link

Yes, I appreciated silby and IO's posts from Thursday. I'm not very articulate on this stuff but a lot of that resonated.
