Yeah, but he does those movies to pay for stuff like "First Reformed," right? Five for them, and one for me.

Ethan Hawke should try for one of those tons-of-makeup roles, or a CGI animal person or something. Get that Groot money.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:47 (six years ago)

hmm what's D'Onofrio been up to lately

Acting AG, iirc.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:47 (six years ago)

i think he may be great idk tho its the kind of suspicion that would disappear if i looked harder than sideways at it

puppy bash (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:48 (six years ago)

I get the point that movies that have an actual artistic intent and involve more work from the actors in the realm of, say, acting rather than having the patience to sit in a makeup chair for eight hours are preferable work and are subjectively better as art. Reading about how the Coens decided they'd rather pitch to Netflix than try to make a play for traditional studio money for their oddball project is kind of disheartening. But if actors can work on smaller projects and parlay that success into a big paycheck wearing a cape and pretending to punch people, then sure, go for it

mh, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:52 (six years ago)

Ethan Hawke = Maxwell Lord obviously

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 22:10 (six years ago)

Max Lord was and is still Sam Neill

hawke is v interesting is there a marvel for him out there

Speedball ffs, read the thread

Reading about how the Coens decided they'd rather pitch to Netflix than try to make a play for traditional studio money

afaik they pitched and sold it to Annapurna, then Annapurna got it financed by Netflix

sans lep (sic), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 22:21 (six years ago)

If Hawke is passed over for Blaze and Speedball, I'll see if I can pull some strings with the casting director for the upcoming D-Man flick.

Mom's out working, for fulfillment (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 22:25 (six years ago)

he’ll have to get on the steroids

We're in 2009—it's time to take risks, (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 22:41 (six years ago)

Max Lord was and is still Sam Neill

this is of course the correct answer

If Hawke is passed over for Blaze

he directed the solo film iirc so that would be a real snub

|Restore| |Restart| |Quit| (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 22:53 (six years ago)

anyway he should play a middle-aged, battle-weary Cyclops

|Restore| |Restart| |Quit| (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 22:54 (six years ago)

he directed the solo film iirc

the Method Man biopic?

I see what you did there Doc

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 23:33 (six years ago)

Ok fine Ethan Hawke is Major Disaster, Oberon, or all four Challengers of the Unknown in different face prosthetics

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 23:56 (six years ago)

Ethan Hawke is Matter Eater Lad

Scam jam, thank you ma’am (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 00:05 (six years ago)

I still don't know what you're all talking about, but he should do a mo-cap Howard the Duck.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 00:06 (six years ago)

Howard's?

I was reading a review of her new movie and just thinking how Natalie Portman somehow managed to avoid the MCU, but then suddenly remembered she not only was in two of those Thor movies but is really the only actor to have jumped ship from the whole MCU enterprise.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:33 (six years ago)

Ed Norton! (Though really he was pushed out.)

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:36 (six years ago)

Jeremy Renner too (?)

rob, Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:38 (six years ago)

As was Terence Howard. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

Plinka Trinka Banga Tink (Eliza D.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:38 (six years ago)

Yeah, and (Academy Award nominee!) Terrance Howard was sort of pushed out, too, right? But Portman opted out.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:39 (six years ago)

Renner is still involved, isn't he? He just wasn't in the last one.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:39 (six years ago)

xxxxposts (geez guys) Hugo Weaving is another that comes to mind. Zachary Levi opted for Captain Marvel (the other one) over Marvel. Terrence Howard and Edward Norton were some less voluntary émigrés.

Renner is in the forthcoming Avengers fillum.

Remains to be seen if any of the Guardians cast are going to split in the wake of the Gunn mess. Bautista sure seems checked out at this point.

For a superlative chug, only the eggiest nog will do! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:43 (six years ago)

Bautista rules

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:46 (six years ago)

Zachary Levi was in two Thor films. He hardly features in Thor 2 and his character was killed off in seconds in Thor Ragnarok. I don't know that there was much in the way of opting out there.

treefell, Thursday, 6 December 2018 15:21 (six years ago)

a) He was not portraying the character who was killed off in Ragnarok, b) I have a feeling that at least some of the dead Asgardians will be returning.

For a superlative chug, only the eggiest nog will do! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 6 December 2018 15:24 (six years ago)

ehhh the one-time villains bumped off at the end of the film, like bridges and weaving, don't count.

|Restore| |Restart| |Quit| (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 6 December 2018 15:24 (six years ago)

Bruh, no spoilerz but you might wanna watch you some Infinity War is alls I'm sayin'.

okay, fine then!

Glad we were able to get the customary misunderstanding-laden tussle between heroes out of the way so quickly.

now let's get on with derailing the captain marvel thread even further

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 6 December 2018 17:51 (six years ago)

Going back to 25 years would also net us Woody Harrelson, Laurence Fishburne, Liam Neeson, Anthony Hopkins, Robert Downey Jr, and Ralph Fiennes, who played Alfred in the Lego Batman Movie.

Obviously there are very very few people in the 'Unaffiliated' who could claim any kind of high moral ground over their position.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 6 December 2018 17:57 (six years ago)

Some of those Unaffiliated folks starrd in some off-brand superhero stuff (e.g. Strathairn in Alphas). Also, Russell Crowe was in one of the nu Supermans, no?

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 18:31 (six years ago)

Sure enough. And I'm sure you could come up with comics-related work for a lot of the people who haven't starred in superhero films per se (Hoffman in Dick Tracy immediately springs to mind).

Hanks in Road to Perdition, Mortensen in History of Violence, Depp in From Hell, etc.

Probably not the point Andrew was making, but still.

Superhero films definitely beneath the dignity of a Roberto Benigni.
