Going back to 25 years would also net us Woody Harrelson, Laurence Fishburne, Liam Neeson, Anthony Hopkins, Robert Downey Jr, and Ralph Fiennes, who played Alfred in the Lego Batman Movie.
Obviously there are very very few people in the 'Unaffiliated' who could claim any kind of high moral ground over their position.
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 6 December 2018 17:57 (five years ago) link
Some of those Unaffiliated folks starrd in some off-brand superhero stuff (e.g. Strathairn in Alphas). Also, Russell Crowe was in one of the nu Supermans, no?
― resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 18:31 (five years ago) link
Sure enough. And I'm sure you could come up with comics-related work for a lot of the people who haven't starred in superhero films per se (Hoffman in Dick Tracy immediately springs to mind).

Hanks in Road to Perdition, Mortensen in History of Violence, Depp in From Hell, etc.
Probably not the point Andrew was making, but still.

Superhero films definitely beneath the dignity of a Roberto Benigni.

Pretty sure only Olivier has earned that honor thus far.

Vincent D'Onofrio won best Supporting for Men In Black iirc

actually lol: both Paul Newman and William Hurt have had IRL Oscar Best Supporting noms for comic-book adaptations

Brad Pitt had a cameo in Deadpool 2, so move him into the X-Men pile. (xps)
― Vernon Locke, Friday, 7 December 2018 00:54 (five years ago) link
Good work on Brad Pitt, and of course Russell Crowe, as two-fisted Marlon Brando.
I didn't really have a point, except that I had a spare hour or so.
Best actress for the last 20:
Unaffiliated: 45 (Angelina Jolie, Carey Mulligan, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Charlize Theron, Charlotte Rampling, Diane Keaton, Ellen Burstyn, Emily Watson, Emmanuelle Riva, Felicity Huffman, Fernanda Montenegro, Frances McDormand, Gabourey Sidibe, Helen Mirren, Hilary Swank, Imelda Staunton, Isabelle Huppert, Janet McTeer, Jessica Chastain, Joan Allen, Judi Dench, Julia Roberts, Julianne Moore, Julie Christie, Juliette Binoche, Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Laura Linney, Melissa Leo, Meryl Streep, Naomi Watts, Penélope Cruz, Quvenzhané Wallis, Reese Witherspoon, Renée Zellweger, Rooney Mara, Rosamund Pike, Ruth Negga, Sally Hawkins, Salma Hayek, Samantha Morton, Sandra Bullock, Saoirse Ronan, Sissy Spacek)

Batman: 3 (Anne Hathaway, Halle Berry, Marion Cotillard)
Other DC: 5 (Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman, Viola Davis)
It's worth pointing out that again, none of the people in the (much larger than the men) Unaffiliated are only doing 'proper' acting - they're just not in the expensive low-brow stuff.

Angelina Jolie starred in a Mark Millar adaptation - unless you're discounting that bcz it was supervillains not superheroes, but you've counted Bassett:
^ also moves Naomi Watts into might-as-well-be-superhero-for-these-purposes

I'm not really counting indie supers, or the note on Geoffrey Rush would have read "As Casanova Frankenstein in Mystery Men" - or TV by the same mark - this is not hard science.
Tank Girl, Divergent or Birdman? :)

Best Supporting Actor, just because I'm amused how much the MCU and Spiderman has raided this category, and also to get Ethan Hawke in:

Spiderman: 10 (Chris Cooper, J. K. Simmons, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jamie Foxx, Mahershala Ali, Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Tom Hardy, Willem Dafoe, Woody Harrelson)
X-Men: 2 (Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellen)
Marvel MCU: 20 (Ben Kingsley, Benicio del Toro, Bradley Cooper, Djimon Hounsou, Edward Norton, Jeff Bridges, Jeremy Renner, John C. Reilly, Josh Brolin, Jude Law, Kenneth Branagh**, Mark Ruffalo, Matt Damon, Michael Clarke Duncan***, Nick Nolte, Robert Downey Jr., Sam Rockwell, Stanley Tucci, Sylvester Stallone, William Hurt)
Batman: 9 (Christian Bale, Christopher Walken, George Clooney, Heath Ledger, Ken Watanabe, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, Tom Wilkinson)
Other DC: 5 (Geoffrey Rush, Jared Leto, Joaquin Phoenix, Michael Shannon, Tim Robbins)
* Though he was the motherfucking Shadow, which has to count for something.** Asgardian Distress Caller in Infinity War, apparently, but also he directed Thor*** Daredevil

Watchmen has been assimilated against its will into the DCU so I think Jackie Earle Haley is technically affiliated.

unless for a comic book role, this is even more pointless than it appears
secondly, road to perdition might be an adaptation of a graphic novel, but a comic-book movie it aint and yes u fuckin know the difference dont start

ah yes, the highbrow literary tone of a Max Allan Collins, filtered through the cinéaste vision of a Sam Mendes, produces something ineffably transformative

Very few comics adaptations adapt particularly hifalutin comics, and even when they (arguably) do, the films themselves don't usually wind up particularly hifalutin (eg From Hell).

Lol at Darraghmac's attempt to argue some comic books are more equal than others.Road to Perdition is actually more of a comic book movie than the MCU ones, because it does actually adapt the story of a comic book into a movie, whereas the Marvel films mostly have original plots that take some story elements from various comics.
