We're in 2009—it's time to take risks, (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 6 December 2018 15:39 (six years ago)

Glad we were able to get the customary misunderstanding-laden tussle between heroes out of the way so quickly.

now let's get on with derailing the captain marvel thread even further

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 6 December 2018 17:51 (six years ago)

Going back to 25 years would also net us Woody Harrelson, Laurence Fishburne, Liam Neeson, Anthony Hopkins, Robert Downey Jr, and Ralph Fiennes, who played Alfred in the Lego Batman Movie.

Obviously there are very very few people in the 'Unaffiliated' who could claim any kind of high moral ground over their position.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 6 December 2018 17:57 (six years ago)

Some of those Unaffiliated folks starrd in some off-brand superhero stuff (e.g. Strathairn in Alphas). Also, Russell Crowe was in one of the nu Supermans, no?

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 18:31 (six years ago)

Sure enough. And I'm sure you could come up with comics-related work for a lot of the people who haven't starred in superhero films per se (Hoffman in Dick Tracy immediately springs to mind).

Hanks in Road to Perdition, Mortensen in History of Violence, Depp in From Hell, etc.

Probably not the point Andrew was making, but still.

Superhero films definitely beneath the dignity of a Roberto Benigni.

Plinka Trinka Banga Tink (Eliza D.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 18:57 (six years ago)

nominated for their comic movie work?

puppy bash (darraghmac), Thursday, 6 December 2018 23:17 (six years ago)

Pretty sure only Olivier has earned that honor thus far.

I've seen the Academy Awards, I've been around (Old Lunch), Thursday, 6 December 2018 23:18 (six years ago)

heath ledger only winner, right

puppy bash (darraghmac), Thursday, 6 December 2018 23:22 (six years ago)

Vincent D'Onofrio won best Supporting for Men In Black iirc

sans lep (sic), Thursday, 6 December 2018 23:46 (six years ago)

actually lol: both Paul Newman and William Hurt have had IRL Oscar Best Supporting noms for comic-book adaptations

sans lep (sic), Thursday, 6 December 2018 23:49 (six years ago)

Brad Pitt had a cameo in Deadpool 2, so move him into the X-Men pile. (xps)

Vernon Locke, Friday, 7 December 2018 00:54 (six years ago)

Good work on Brad Pitt, and of course Russell Crowe, as two-fisted Marlon Brando.

I didn't really have a point, except that I had a spare hour or so.

Best actress for the last 20:

Unaffiliated: 45 (Angelina Jolie, Carey Mulligan, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Charlize Theron, Charlotte Rampling, Diane Keaton, Ellen Burstyn, Emily Watson, Emmanuelle Riva, Felicity Huffman, Fernanda Montenegro, Frances McDormand, Gabourey Sidibe, Helen Mirren, Hilary Swank, Imelda Staunton, Isabelle Huppert, Janet McTeer, Jessica Chastain, Joan Allen, Judi Dench, Julia Roberts, Julianne Moore, Julie Christie, Juliette Binoche, Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Laura Linney, Melissa Leo, Meryl Streep, Naomi Watts, Penélope Cruz, Quvenzhané Wallis, Reese Witherspoon, Renée Zellweger, Rooney Mara, Rosamund Pike, Ruth Negga, Sally Hawkins, Salma Hayek, Samantha Morton, Sandra Bullock, Saoirse Ronan, Sissy Spacek)

Spiderman: 3 (Emma Stone, Felicity Jones, Michelle Williams)

X-Men: 2 (Ellen Page, Jennifer Lawrence)

Marvel MCU: 6 (Annette Bening, Brie Larson, Cate Blanchett, Glenn Close, Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman)

Batman: 3 (Anne Hathaway, Halle Berry, Marion Cotillard)

Other DC: 5 (Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman, Viola Davis)

It's worth pointing out that again, none of the people in the (much larger than the men) Unaffiliated are only doing 'proper' acting - they're just not in the expensive low-brow stuff.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 7 December 2018 23:08 (six years ago)

Another 5 years would just get us Angela Basset and Holly Hunter

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 7 December 2018 23:14 (six years ago)

And again, there's a non-negligible portion of the unaffiliated who've made non-superhero comics movies.

vocabulary is just a way to sound samrter than you actually are (Old Lunch), Friday, 7 December 2018 23:17 (six years ago)

(And perhaps worth noting: Ruth Negga has been featured on both a superhero and a non-superhero comics adaptation tv series.)

vocabulary is just a way to sound samrter than you actually are (Old Lunch), Friday, 7 December 2018 23:20 (six years ago)

Angelina Jolie starred in a Mark Millar adaptation - unless you're discounting that bcz it was supervillains not superheroes, but you've counted Bassett:

Another 5 years would just get us Angela Basset and Holly Hunter

^ also moves Naomi Watts into might-as-well-be-superhero-for-these-purposes

sans lep (sic), Friday, 7 December 2018 23:28 (six years ago)

I'm not really counting indie supers, or the note on Geoffrey Rush would have read "As Casanova Frankenstein in Mystery Men" - or TV by the same mark - this is not hard science.

^ also moves Naomi Watts into might-as-well-be-superhero-for-these-purposes

Tank Girl, Divergent or Birdman? :)

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 7 December 2018 23:58 (six years ago)

Best Supporting Actor, just because I'm amused how much the MCU and Spiderman has raided this category, and also to get Ethan Hawke in:

Unaffiliated: 33 (Alan Alda, Alan Arkin, Albert Finney, Alec Baldwin*, Barkhad Abdi, Billy Bob Thornton, Casey Affleck, Christoph Waltz, Christopher Plummer, Clive Owen, Dev Patel, Ed Harris, Eddie Murphy, Ethan Hawke, Hal Holbrook, Haley Joel Osment, Jackie Earle Haley, James Coburn, Javier Bardem, Jim Broadbent, John Hawkes, Jon Voight, Jonah Hill, Lucas Hedges, Mark Rylance, Mark Wahlberg, Matt Dillon, Max von Sydow, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Richard Jenkins, Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall, Tom Cruise)

Spiderman: 10 (Chris Cooper, J. K. Simmons, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jamie Foxx, Mahershala Ali, Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Tom Hardy, Willem Dafoe, Woody Harrelson)

X-Men: 2 (Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellen)

Marvel MCU: 20 (Ben Kingsley, Benicio del Toro, Bradley Cooper, Djimon Hounsou, Edward Norton, Jeff Bridges, Jeremy Renner, John C. Reilly, Josh Brolin, Jude Law, Kenneth Branagh**, Mark Ruffalo, Matt Damon, Michael Clarke Duncan***, Nick Nolte, Robert Downey Jr., Sam Rockwell, Stanley Tucci, Sylvester Stallone, William Hurt)

Batman: 9 (Christian Bale, Christopher Walken, George Clooney, Heath Ledger, Ken Watanabe, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, Tom Wilkinson)

Other DC: 5 (Geoffrey Rush, Jared Leto, Joaquin Phoenix, Michael Shannon, Tim Robbins)

* Though he was the motherfucking Shadow, which has to count for something.
** Asgardian Distress Caller in Infinity War, apparently, but also he directed Thor
*** Daredevil

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 7 December 2018 23:59 (six years ago)

Watchmen has been assimilated against its will into the DCU so I think Jackie Earle Haley is technically affiliated.

See, now I want a cumulative list of all thirteen or so of these nominees/winners whose filmographies remain unsullied by any comics-related project.

vocabulary is just a way to sound samrter than you actually are (Old Lunch), Saturday, 8 December 2018 00:27 (six years ago)

Alda was Commissioner Gordon in the first Batman, btw.

How did you do Best Actress and miss Halle Berry?

GDPR vs GAPDY (DJP), Saturday, 8 December 2018 00:31 (six years ago)

(She's listed under Batman.)

vocabulary is just a way to sound samrter than you actually are (Old Lunch), Saturday, 8 December 2018 00:34 (six years ago)

That is just ornery

GDPR vs GAPDY (DJP), Saturday, 8 December 2018 00:36 (six years ago)

Halle Berry and Julianne Moore are in the second Kingsman movie.

Jessica Chastain is in the next X-Men.

The Greta Van Gerwig (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 8 December 2018 00:45 (six years ago)

Casanova Frankenstein

Original to the film! (as are all but two of the characters iirc)

sans lep (sic), Saturday, 8 December 2018 00:46 (six years ago)

AF already said he’s not counting Millar joints (though obv I endorse noting them!)

sans lep (sic), Saturday, 8 December 2018 00:47 (six years ago)

firstly

unless for a comic book role, this is even more pointless than it appears

secondly, road to perdition might be an adaptation of a graphic novel, but a comic-book movie it aint and yes u fuckin know the difference dont start

puppy bash (darraghmac), Saturday, 8 December 2018 01:26 (six years ago)

ah yes, the highbrow literary tone of a Max Allan Collins, filtered through the cinéaste vision of a Sam Mendes, produces something ineffably transformative

sans lep (sic), Saturday, 8 December 2018 01:38 (six years ago)

Graphic novels are comic books

GDPR vs GAPDY (DJP), Saturday, 8 December 2018 03:56 (six years ago)

grats

road to perdition is not a comic book movie

avengers et al are

puppy bash (darraghmac), Saturday, 8 December 2018 12:32 (six years ago)

Gone With the Wind is not a book movie.

Harry Potter et al are.

vocabulary is just a way to sound samrter than you actually are (Old Lunch), Saturday, 8 December 2018 13:27 (six years ago)

Very few comics adaptations adapt particularly hifalutin comics, and even when they (arguably) do, the films themselves don't usually wind up particularly hifalutin (eg From Hell).

I mean, appropriate song use there.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 04:49 (six years ago)

Man, "Connection" is almost 25 years old ... We're nearly as far from that song as, like, Prince's "Sign O the Times" is from "Love Me Do."

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 13:18 (six years ago)

i've said itt before but man i can't stop boggling at how good that de-ageing tech is getting

an erotic picnic with Ming (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 8 January 2019 13:23 (six years ago)

We've only seen it in short bursts though right? It was a little borderline in GOTG2 and Star Wars, and that was only a couple of years ago.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 14:04 (six years ago)

it looked noticeably better in ant-man and the wasp iirc

Lol at Darraghmac's attempt to argue some comic books are more equal than others.

Road to Perdition is actually more of a comic book movie than the MCU ones, because it does actually adapt the story of a comic book into a movie, whereas the Marvel films mostly have original plots that take some story elements from various comics.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 14:09 (six years ago)

fun fact: road to perdition is absolutely fucking terrible

an erotic picnic with Ming (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 8 January 2019 14:14 (six years ago)

the de-aging in Aquaman looked good on Nicole Kidman and bizarre on Temuera Morrison... I don't think anyone has it down to a science yet

the deaging on Kidman was the best I've ever seen. I mean if you didn't know she actually looked older you would not have known anything was done to her at all. Of course she looks kind of unreal in real life these days too.
