I don't read reddit but I do love that subreddit called Stolen Seats about this very thing.
People suck, don't ever give up your assigned seat. On planes, I always have people trying to sit in my seat because I usually have exit row or aisle. It's amazing how people won't get up. I look nice, but bitch, you don't know me, get the fuck up.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:30 (five years ago) link
Although I once did voluntarily give up my seat once because some 6'7" dude was crammed in the back and making noise and I felt bad and it was a short flight. I was also hoping to get bumped up.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:32 (five years ago) link
the thing about the assigned seats is: if you are the one with an assigned seat asking someone to move you are in the right but feel like an uptight jerk, and if you are the one sitting in someone's assigned seat you are in the wrong but get to feel morally superior about how above it all you are.

The only thing you should do if someone is in your seat is make them pay you in cash for however much you think their ask is worth That usually gets them up.

i relish telling people to get off my seat

Flip side is when we make one of our rare forays to the minor league baseball park, and the usher says "Oh, just sit down there in one of the front rows. Those season-ticket holders never show up, and if they do, you can always move."
And I'm just frozen on the inside, going "Please don't make me do that. Please don't make me do that."

I remember going to Lollapalooza 1992 with a crew of people and between us we had 3 good tickets and 12 lawn ones. We were able to sneak all 15 of us up to the three good seats, but as it got later in the day people kept showing up and kicking us out of their assigned seats and we ended up with five people sitting on top of each other in each of the three seats hoping not to get kicked out until the lights would go down.

Lollapalooza 1995 was the opposite. Hole left the stage and the whole front section emptied out before Sonic Youth.

OMG, thanks for reminding me of this one pet peeve of mine! I try to be above-it-all and not mind when the microwave display is left at a seemingly random amount of seconds, but it still irks.

BTW, I'm very rationally pissed off at Ye Mad Puffin's daughter's former school's PTA for opting for that Hate Chicken outfit for their fundraisers, even though I can honestly say I was one of the people who thought Hate Chicken had given up on their hatred when they said they had back in ca. 2012.

I like Sonic Youth's music but they are tiresome as fuh live. I think I have left 3-4 shows before their set or after 1-2 songs (I was even with ian one time where we both decided it wasn't worth staying a set change for them to come on because we timed it late and missed Dinosaur Jr and oh well.)
― Yerac, Thursday, 2 May 2019 01:38 (five years ago) link
well there's the problem you didn't stay long enough. I do remmeber them closing that Lollapalozza with the face melting Diamond Sea and then encoring w Schizophrenia / White Cross / Teenage Riot. Lotsa cool lights too.
I also sort of remember the whole rest of that lineup sucking except Jesus Lizard

oh, i have never been to a lollapalooza. This was from seeing Sonic Youth so many other times and deciding it wasn't ever worth it again.

Only saw SY once, at a Lollapalooza, and man, it was everything Hadrian mentioned and more.

Also, the people on a recurring meeting's conference call who announce who they are regularly. "This is Mike. I wanted to say..." We work with you, and know your voice, unless you're trying out a Jimmy Stewart imitation.

re: IM, I'll say "Q when you have a moment" to avoid accidentally popping up on their screen and interrupting a (non-statused) presenter. And like Andrew says, to let them answer at their convenience. I work with a number of people whose questions are your immediate #1 priority, and I like to avoid that, if possible.

Re train seats, I always find that "Hi, I hate to be the sort of person who says 'You're sitting in my seat', but..." usually works. On a packed train recently the seat reservations computer display things weren't working, which certain people had interpreted as the reservations being cancelled, that was quite an argument...

I know car stuff deserves its own IR thread, but twice in the last week I've yielded to cars or people who totally have the right of way, but when I'm sitting there waiting for them to move the driver/pedestrian shoots me a look and impatiently waves their arm, like, "aren't you going to go!?" And it pisses me off, because no, I'm wasn't going to go, they have the right of way and I don't want to hurt anyone. So then I'm basically forced to rescind my yield and cut them off, which throws off the rhythm of traffic.
Also, the pedestrian is invariably surprised by you being there to turn at all, because they have headphones on and they're engrossed in their phone and it's a wonder they even look up and notice they're on the curb and about to stride into the street.

anyone who wants to interrupt right-of-way rules to earn themselves a lil karma bell is a dickhead

this x1000
in western MA this is the norm—dummy thinks s/he is being kind to a single driver by stopping to let them in, meanwhile backing traffic up for a dozen cars behind them
― d'ILM for Murder (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 3 May 2019 12:26 (five years ago) link
People who do this annoy me so much! I love the drivers who stop and wave me on when there's traffic coming in the opposite direction as well.
With the amount of time spent trying to figure out what they're doing, it would have been quicker if they hadn't stopped to let me go.

Trousers with fewer than seven belt loops.
― WmC, Saturday, 11 May 2019 03:00 (five years ago) link
Really? I always make mine with 5 which seems to be the right support points. Not really studied it overly but it does seem to work right.front between pocket and fly, side around where the side seams are and centre back.
― Stevolende, Saturday, 11 May 2019 09:38 (five years ago) link
I’m a big fan of six loops, but it’s rare to encounter even that many. For decades I’ve semi-often had to remake the centre back loop on otherwise well-wearing five-loop jeans and trousers bcz it’s so load-bearing that it wears through.I can’t tell if seven seems luxurious or aggressively prophylactic. Three spaced across the back, two by the fly, two perched at the front of the hips?

I prefer one loop, and my belt just hangs from my waist like a coiled bullwhip.

The car thing is otm, it’s so arrogant to think that the road rules are yours to magnanimously dispense with as a favour. Leaves everyone else uncertain as to which rules you’ll be following and which you find optional, i.e. breaks the covenant between road users.
