Half the Tim & Eric thread is about this show so I think it deserves its own thread

Granted I'm only like 13 hours into this thing but it's possibly one of the best comedic achievements of the 21st century

also this video is wonderful and I watch it every day

Worth looking for: the episode of The Best Show from a couple years back where Tim and Gregg take up about an hour of the show arguing over whether or not Tim actually saw the Tom Cruise remake of The Mummy.

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 15:44 (six years ago)

I never really gave a shit about the Tim & Eric show but I am 100% on board with this as pure genius, Turkington hooking up with him was a godsend.
I'm on season 9.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 16:08 (six years ago)

feel like I'm doing a marathon to catch up but even then I can only watch like a handful of these in a row otherwise I will succumb to severe couchlock hypnosis

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 16:10 (six years ago)

I think the guys using the mailbag to passive aggressively torment/spring surprises on each other is my favorite gag

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 16:11 (six years ago)

best comedy on earth

imago, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 16:27 (six years ago)

when you've got movies like Tom Cruise in them

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 16:29 (six years ago)

i watched the first episode of this afew days ago.....does it get better? or do you just have to immerse yourself in the voib for a few episodes before you can get into it?

. (Michael B), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 17:16 (six years ago)

It’s my favorite television thing. You really need to immerse yourself (similar to the Best Show).

Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 17:18 (six years ago)

Immerse, my friend. Let it wash over you.

Six seasons of uncritical plaudits for every film under the sun was a magnificent setup for Tim's excoriating Ant-Man review.

I Ate Those Food (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 17:19 (six years ago)

I got into it through the spin-off, Decker.

Oh god there are Oscar specials and a 12 hour long youtube clip ;_; I am going to have to watch it, I'm afraid. These guys are unreal.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 17:48 (six years ago)

didn't realize it until I went back but Tim's speech was a lot less garbled pre-brain surgery

frogbs, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 18:03 (six years ago)

for some reason the Oscar Specials are not on the Adult Swim streaming channel

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 18:18 (six years ago)

i watched the first episode of this afew days ago.....does it get better?

at first it just seems like a shitty half-assed parody that does not feature any actual jokes, but as time goes on, the layers of comedy really accrue in an ingenious way

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 18:19 (six years ago)

probably said this in the other thread but Tim's explanation of why he's paying for Ayaka's abortion despite being a staunch pro-lifer is the purest distillation of the right-wing ethos that I've ever heard

frogbs, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 18:20 (six years ago)

he just... he wasn't going to be in that situation

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 18:22 (six years ago)

how come there are no animated gifs of Tim's guitar wanking faces, that shit is comedy gold

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 18:24 (six years ago)

he just... he wasn't going to be in that situation

choices have to be on the table

I don't know how to explain this to you but the "Stump the Buff" segment where Tim nails Gregg on the Star Trek/San Francisco trivia question is just as dramatic as the scene in Breaking Bad where Hank figures out who Heisenberg is

frogbs, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 18:34 (six years ago)

you must be talking about Star Trek II

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 18:39 (six years ago)

which as Trekkie and non-Trekkie alike knows, takes place in San Francisco

This playlist seems to comprise the definitive chronology of the On Cinema-verse (countdown to exasperated sic post detailing, at length, what's missing from said hi playlist): https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRT5PdjVF-ipL5SPXbmZXzfBchXVR8JTo

I graciously accept your thanks for my recommending that playlist to you

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 06:53 (six years ago)

I completely don’t get this

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 07:13 (six years ago)

Popcorn Classic is a really useful term for a certain kind of movie.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 09:37 (six years ago)

I thank u, sic, although I spent a long while watching a different, much less complete YT playlist (after starting on the even less complete playlist on that one website) so I just wanted to make sure no one else made my stupid mistake. I give this latest playlist five bags of popcorn and a hundred cups of soda.

I Ate Those Food (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 14:28 (six years ago)

The later seasons of Decker aren’t on youtube btw, but iirc they stop interacting directly with On Cinema episodes so it doesn’t stand out badly

(The two Ant-Man movies also don’t appear in the playlist, but do very much affect On Cinema video and twitter content )

forks if you were starting at an early point, try dropping in on a S4 or 5 episode, when the Tim vs Gregg tone is better established & there’s loads of backstory, to see if it pings any better with you

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:16 (six years ago)

eh I think starting in the beginning obscures what a slow build this show is

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:17 (six years ago)

er starting in the MIDDLE

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:17 (six years ago)

the whole of season 9 seems to be an extended satire on how annoying having dinner service at the Alamo Drafthouses is

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:24 (six years ago)

"Tastes like a mouthful of dirt."

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:27 (six years ago)

Todd Rundgren appears in the last episode of Decker...I knew that voice was familiar!!

frogbs, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:28 (six years ago)

"Why was he fired, did he forget to wipe down the microwave?"

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:34 (six years ago)

if someone "completely doesn't get" the show at the beginning, pushing on through twenty episodes of more of the same is probably going to bore and annoy them

oh yeah, the full real-time Trial Of Tim Heidecker coverage isn't on youtube either, just 10-15 minutes highlights from each day (iirc that's all I watched, then switched over for the full verdict)

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:41 (six years ago)

a couple of my old acquaintances recently started a video game podcast. I listened to one episode and thought about On Cinema the whole time. one of the guys has probably played 20,000 hours of video games but has absolutely nothing insightful to say about them, it's so spot on that I've almost come to view Tim & Gregg as real people

frogbs, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 22:07 (six years ago)

FIFA should totally create a Film Academy to honor the art of biographical documentaries - that was so shamefully overlooked by the fake Hollywood awards - and give the win in all the categories to Melania. The FIFAFA statuettes, which the rules stipulate have to be affectionately nicknamed Giannis by the public, should be 5% taller and more shiny than the Oscars, and they would surely look great in the White House. Imho.

StanM, Monday, 16 March 2026 09:53 (one month ago)

the Totogate segment was classic On Cinema, especially given the meta element of knowing neither of them actually see the movies they're reviewing

frogbs, Monday, 16 March 2026 15:07 (one month ago)

I've always understood it as Greg's character is legitimately seeing all the movies but his taste and focus is so bad due to impenetrable personal delusions / priorities that he often is often flat out wrong about what he's seen.

Evan, Monday, 16 March 2026 15:53 (one month ago)

I have no memory of them ever mentioning Tim had a first marriage and kid

Mollusk, Virginia (Boring, Maryland), Monday, 16 March 2026 16:00 (one month ago)

in the first couple seasons he was married and got divorced

c u (crüt), Monday, 16 March 2026 16:05 (one month ago)

I don't think it was brought up again after Season 2 so I'd assumed it was retconned out of the show, didn't seem like they were thinking too much about the 'plot' of On Cinema back in those days

seemed to be heavily implied that Aidan was emotionally stunted by his Dad leaving him which made the ending particularly dark, especially knowing what tends to happen to Tim's kids

frogbs, Monday, 16 March 2026 16:24 (one month ago)

as for Gregg its kinda hard to say, there have been a lot of moments where he's shown to be a dishonest egomaniac who has no problem lying in order to cover his ass but his central character trait is his inability to understand art on any level, all movies are equally great in his mind

that said I don't think a cameo by Dorothy and Toto would go unnoticed by Gregg, in fact I'd argue that's the *only* thing he would have noticed about the film, I think he just didn't see it because it was a musical

frogbs, Monday, 16 March 2026 16:32 (one month ago)

I don't think it was brought up again after Season 2 so I'd assumed it was retconned out of the show

i'd have to go back and watch it but i think Tim alluded to it during the "wedding" oscar special too

c u (crüt), Monday, 16 March 2026 16:42 (one month ago)

I think Gregg did see Wicked 2 it's just funny that he insists #thewitchstoodup when he could easily say "dorothy and toto are barely in the movie, it's negligible"

c u (crüt), Monday, 16 March 2026 16:43 (one month ago)

gotta say I was a bit disappointed Hank didn't make an appearance, though I heard the guy who plays him literally lives in Germany now

Clare responding to the 1 bag Dootle Dots reviews with "maybe they're all Italians" was hilarious, her mic was off so I'm guessing that was adlibbed

frogbs, Monday, 16 March 2026 16:57 (one month ago)

haha yeah, that was great

anyone else think aidan’s look was pretty charlie kirk?

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Monday, 16 March 2026 17:13 (one month ago)

I think Gregg did see Wicked 2 it's just funny that he insists #thewitchstoodup when he could easily say "dorothy and toto are barely in the movie, it's negligible"

yeah this was my take too. tim does that classic abuser thing where he forces gregg into a situation where he’s defending himself over something totally minor and gregg has too much buff pride to resist the trap and lies when attacked.

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Monday, 16 March 2026 17:18 (one month ago)

looking forward to DHS deporting Axiom and Manuel for violating their visa.

Mollusk, Virginia (Boring, Maryland), Monday, 16 March 2026 18:58 (one month ago)

wonder if a second Trial of Tim Heidecker is in the cards. normally I wouldn't want a show like this to repeat itself but Tim using Grok Amato as his legal counsel against Amato's twin brother would be incredible, especially since this is a case Gregg is directly involved in, plus it's a good way to bring Toni and Joey P back

what are the odds Alex Jones watches the entire Trial of Tim Heidecker in the week and believes it to be 100% real?

frogbs, Friday, 24 April 2026 16:30 (six days ago)

on Office Hours yesterday, Heidecker came out as a committed worshiper of Satan, just throwing gas on this fire

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 24 April 2026 16:35 (six days ago)

that was in response to an article already accusing him of that, but yes

doesn't matter if he believes it, he's trying to create a narrative, so either way that's how he'll portray it

Evan, Friday, 24 April 2026 16:48 (six days ago)

this is extraordinarily funny

The New Blockader (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 24 April 2026 16:55 (six days ago)

The Onion newspaper has been rocked by the discovery

how could they have known what they were getting into with Tim

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 24 April 2026 17:11 (six days ago)

zero effort on Jones' part so far. just describing Tim's actual characters and repertoire

mh, Friday, 24 April 2026 17:21 (six days ago)

incredible that Info Wars is now part of the On Cinema extended universe

mick gagger (diamonddave85), Friday, 24 April 2026 17:30 (six days ago)

feel like I'm gonna have a stroke watching these

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 24 April 2026 17:46 (six days ago)

I think there possibly was a racist, Bircher-influenced Alex Jones that existed and did an exaggerated kayfabe-style act for his show years ago, but I don't think he's anything but the one thing now. All of the attention and god knows what supplements and chronic alcoholism means his brain is just like that 24/7 now. So there's no "game recognize game" here, his brain is as red, nude, and mad as the rest of him

Tim can turn it all off and be a normal guy or a completely different guy at any moment and I would like to think somewhere in Jones' brain there's two neurons firing back and forth that are even angrier about that fact

mh, Friday, 24 April 2026 17:52 (six days ago)

similar to how Andrew Dice Clay and Larry the Cable Guy started as characters that they played for so long that they eventually just became those guys

frogbs, Friday, 24 April 2026 19:16 (six days ago)

I mean, I feel like for most Trump voters it started as kayfabe that became real the more and more they got dragged into the right wing ecosphere, its probably the same for the folks making this shit. the stuff that came out during that divorce/custody battle def seems to imply that its not just a character anymore

frogbs, Friday, 24 April 2026 19:18 (six days ago)

xp the Diceman kinda redeemed himself by being in actual films, I have no idea what Larry is up to and don't really care

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 24 April 2026 19:19 (six days ago)

I should check and see if he survived the pandemic

frogbs, Friday, 24 April 2026 19:25 (six days ago)

Whitney currently works as a radio personality for Sirius XM's Jeff & Larry's Comedy Roundup channel

Larry the Cable Guy being a Nebraska guy gets me every time, but he may have been the harbinger of the many rural midwesterners who didn't have any specific cultural signposts and just started pretending to be southerners. I guess in a different way, that's a bunch of midwestern guys in music, all the way from Ted Nugent to Kid Rock

mh, Friday, 24 April 2026 20:15 (six days ago)

i assume that's where the "pro pedo/child kidnapping" bit comes from

jones did a whole infowars episode yelling over this and a few other sketches the other day

ufo, Friday, 24 April 2026 22:05 (six days ago)

On Cinema references everywhere you look online today

frogbs, Saturday, 25 April 2026 04:52 (five days ago)

I'm pretty sure Alex Jones knows how stupid this all sounds, it doesn't matter why you click and discuss, it just matters that you do so at all

Cattedrale metropolitana di Santa Maria de Episcopio, Saturday, 25 April 2026 05:10 (five days ago)

there's no "game recognize game" here, his brain is as red, nude, and mad as the rest of him

his broadcaster / character-writer’s instinct is probably still vestigially operating, to seize on skits or say the killer of the Electric Sun 20 is a real mugshot, instead of just yelling his real grievances. but yeah there’s probably not a person-Jones behind the kayfabe who knows the gag is for rubes.
