i watched the first episode of this afew days ago.....does it get better?

at first it just seems like a shitty half-assed parody that does not feature any actual jokes, but as time goes on, the layers of comedy really accrue in an ingenious way

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 18:19 (six years ago)

probably said this in the other thread but Tim's explanation of why he's paying for Ayaka's abortion despite being a staunch pro-lifer is the purest distillation of the right-wing ethos that I've ever heard

frogbs, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 18:20 (six years ago)

he just... he wasn't going to be in that situation

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 18:22 (six years ago)

how come there are no animated gifs of Tim's guitar wanking faces, that shit is comedy gold

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 18:24 (six years ago)

choices have to be on the table

i watched the first episode of this afew days ago.....does it get better? or do you just have to immerse yourself in the voib for a few episodes before you can get into it?

I don't know how to explain this to you but the "Stump the Buff" segment where Tim nails Gregg on the Star Trek/San Francisco trivia question is just as dramatic as the scene in Breaking Bad where Hank figures out who Heisenberg is

frogbs, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 18:34 (six years ago)

you must be talking about Star Trek II

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 18:39 (six years ago)

which as Trekkie and non-Trekkie alike knows, takes place in San Francisco

This playlist seems to comprise the definitive chronology of the On Cinema-verse (countdown to exasperated sic post detailing, at length, what's missing from said hi playlist): https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRT5PdjVF-ipL5SPXbmZXzfBchXVR8JTo

(No idea where that rogue 'hi' came from so that would be sic gripe #1., I'm sure.)

I graciously accept your thanks for my recommending that playlist to you

I completely don’t get this

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 07:13 (six years ago)

Popcorn Classic is a really useful term for a certain kind of movie.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 09:37 (six years ago)

I thank u, sic, although I spent a long while watching a different, much less complete YT playlist (after starting on the even less complete playlist on that one website) so I just wanted to make sure no one else made my stupid mistake. I give this latest playlist five bags of popcorn and a hundred cups of soda.

I Ate Those Food (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 14:28 (six years ago)

The later seasons of Decker aren’t on youtube btw, but iirc they stop interacting directly with On Cinema episodes so it doesn’t stand out badly

(The two Ant-Man movies also don’t appear in the playlist, but do very much affect On Cinema video and twitter content )

forks if you were starting at an early point, try dropping in on a S4 or 5 episode, when the Tim vs Gregg tone is better established & there’s loads of backstory, to see if it pings any better with you

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:16 (six years ago)

eh I think starting in the beginning obscures what a slow build this show is

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:17 (six years ago)

er starting in the MIDDLE

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:17 (six years ago)

the whole of season 9 seems to be an extended satire on how annoying having dinner service at the Alamo Drafthouses is

Todd Rundgren appears in the last episode of Decker...I knew that voice was familiar!!

"Why was he fired, did he forget to wipe down the microwave?"

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:34 (six years ago)

if someone "completely doesn't get" the show at the beginning, pushing on through twenty episodes of more of the same is probably going to bore and annoy them

oh yeah, the full real-time Trial Of Tim Heidecker coverage isn't on youtube either, just 10-15 minutes highlights from each day (iirc that's all I watched, then switched over for the full verdict)

the satire of the kind of fake fancy junk food you get in north america - e.g. everything coming with truffle aoili - was very good

I would say you can watch highlights of the trial until Tim fires his attorney and starts defending himself, then switch to the full thing

a couple of my old acquaintances recently started a video game podcast. I listened to one episode and thought about On Cinema the whole time. one of the guys has probably played 20,000 hours of video games but has absolutely nothing insightful to say about them, it's so spot on that I've almost come to view Tim & Gregg as real people

frogbs, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 22:07 (six years ago)

Has anyone started an On On Cinema at the Cinema podcast yet

What have you watched / listened to so far?

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Monday, 8 July 2019 02:25 (six years ago)

Me, I just bore witness to the cancellation of Decker season 3 this evening, so it's difficult to put myself back in the headspace of several years ago when I watched a handful of On Cinemas and said 'IDGI'. Suffice it say, I'm glad I got over myself.

there was a brief bit where they caught Tim and Gregg genuinely laughing at something, unaware the cameras were on them

frogbs, Monday, 3 March 2025 04:15 (eight months ago)

They were laughing at Toni interviewing G. Amato on the red carpet.

Chris L, Monday, 3 March 2025 14:36 (eight months ago)

Joe Estevez's moment of clarity at the end ("I need to go dry out") before walking off felt like a big pay-off.

Chris L, Monday, 3 March 2025 14:39 (eight months ago)

wonder if Tim made it to Wells Fargo this morning

frogbs, Monday, 3 March 2025 15:40 (eight months ago)

hopefully the replay is up tonight, I can't wait to watch Tim's movie again. this show is usually such a slow burn but that just had me dying from start to finish. it was so good I was starting to worry it was the series finale. in particular: Mark doing Joey Patron as WC Fields, Tim casting the adult film actor to play himself, and all the digs at Corwyn's musical ability, the whole thing felt like fanservice in the best way

only hit me afterwards how messed up the whole thing was, obviously it explains why Joe, Manuel, and Ax were so cagey with Toni as to what the movie was actually about, also the casting of Axiom in particular is deeply fucked up. Tim extending the gunfight scene to like a full minute and then making Toni watch it, holy shit

Tim just did a long AMA about the show, pretty fun read

https://www.reddit.com/r/OnCinemaAtTheCinema/comments/1nck1ky/tim_heidecker_meta_ama_friday_september_19th/

main takeaways for me: Decker is probably done for good, they still want to do OC 'spin off' stuff but the main show takes a lot of cash. no plans to ever end the show though they've discussed what it might look like. no spoilers for S16 though Tim's hinted his new look is gonna be...something

some stuff I did not know - Axiom was cast solely from a headshot, he asked if he could bring his friend Manuel along, and they found them funny enough to make them recurring characters. and Tim really DOES get drunk during the specials.

frogbs, Friday, 19 September 2025 19:14 (one month ago)

I’m pretty sure Tim one said that he met Axiom at Guitar Center but maybe that was a joke

Mr. T's Ballroom (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 19 September 2025 20:26 (one month ago)

that's how they met in-universe

c u (crüt), Friday, 19 September 2025 21:27 (one month ago)

I remember someone claiming that was actually the real story but apparently not

he did wind up answering my question:

CritterJams

Is it an intentional decision to get actors from as diverse a background as possible for the show? I'm thinking in particular of the scenes where it's like...you, Wendy Kirby, Michael Matthews, and Manuel, outside of this show it's impossible to even imagine anything that would bring that particular group of people together. Is this part of a broader strategy to create an environment where a wide variety of funny things can happen, or do you prefer inexperienced actors who maybe don't understand what the show's about to enhance OC's in-universe "amateur hour" vibe? Or are these the same thing? Apologies for the convoluted question, but to me this is the thing that makes OC stand out from everything else I can think of.

ha ha yeah we love thinking about that. Why these people would ever be together if it wasn't for Tim and Gregg. I don't know if it's a question of experience or inexperience but some people just have it and some don't. I think it all comes down to who is delivering the most honest performance, and sometimes that someone who really has a technical approach and a trained background in it or someone who is just naturally comfortable with being themselves.

META: I saw Zac aka Dr. San today at the coffee shop this morning. Not remarkable because he used to live in my neighborhood (he was roommates with Gregg at one point), but notable because this was the first time I've seen him since OCATC. We chatted real quick and i'm gonna take the family to see them tonight.
