Hey Gregg? Stay out of my movie!!!

can't think of a movie I've more anticipated in years

the inclusion of DKR is killing me

wonder if this movie is gonna make sense to anyone who doesn't know the On Cinema stuff, I'm guessing not really

frogbs, Wednesday, 4 September 2019 18:02 (five years ago) link

On a related note, I'm going to see Gregg do a one off show tonight with Zip Code Redemption (glad to see their edge lordy name left in the past). Although I've seen him
live as Neil a bunch before, I've never even listened to his music before so it should be interesting.

methanietanner, Wednesday, 4 September 2019 18:10 (five years ago) link

I feel like they could pull off a little backstory in a graceful enough way that it could be watchable for someone not familiar. I don't think they'd have to cover everything, but the festival and trial are the main past events the audience should know. I assume cameos by Gregg and other On Cinema people will be used to provide movie review origins / Decker context too.

Evan, Wednesday, 4 September 2019 18:17 (five years ago) link

yeah the festival and trial are really all the backstory required

trailer seems to set it up fine, an unfit narcissist is running for office in between rage fits

feels like America can probably follow that concept

looks like the movie contains even more popcorn eating and vaping of dangerous chemicals for us on cinema-heads

looks like a five bagger.

Vape Store (crüt), Wednesday, 4 September 2019 18:45 (five years ago) link

yeah if this is gonna be screened in theaters I guess it won't rely too much on backstory but it's gonna be hard to explain why Gregg wearing a "Time Machine" hat is so funny

frogbs, Wednesday, 4 September 2019 19:01 (five years ago) link

a 1997 Ford Explorer is an excellent casting choice for Tim's car

del griffith, Wednesday, 4 September 2019 19:03 (five years ago) link

not sure if this was intentional or not but Tim trying to record getting "assaulted" by Rosetti feels like it might be a direct reference to Baked Alaska

If you think the OCatC universe is nuts, back in the early/mid-90s the EasyGoings/Zip Code Rapists/Three Doctors universe was arguably more insane. It started out as Gregg/John as the Easy-Goings, which through the help of many TFUL282 members, morphed into The Zip Code Rapists and then as time went on (let me know if this sounds familiar) the band's live shows became increasingly passive-aggressive->angry->full on on-stage brawls between Gregg & John... which led to the dissolution of the Zip Code Rapists into a competitive feud between The Three Doctors (led by Gregg and his Caroliner bandmate Brandan Kearney) & Therapist John's Zip Code Revue (led by John), where most of each band's shows would devolve into bad mouthing of the other band (often by the other member in (or out of) disguise heckling from the "crowd") and more brawls.

I did a quick google to see if anyone ever documented all of this in the early web, but I'm having trouble finding any completionist summaries of the proto-Amarillo universe.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 4 September 2019 19:53 (five years ago) link

oh wow I have never read that all spelled out so succinctly, having only encountered the ZCR and Caroliner stuff tangentially

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 4 September 2019 19:55 (five years ago) link

all of this makes it much funnier to me that gregg's on cinema character has no interest in or use for music whatsoever except as a score to a great movie

Possibly even a Popcorn Classic!

Conceptualize Wyverns (latebloomer), Wednesday, 4 September 2019 20:41 (five years ago) link

Now that I think of it, these drama/fights/feuds are a common recurrence in Gregg's oeuvre. This is super obscure but even Faxed Head had a nemesis band called Bon Larvis... that was absolutely terrible, I think they were a Pablo Cruise cover band... maybe Milton remembers them?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 4 September 2019 21:19 (five years ago) link

Oh hell yeah there’s a screening in Milwaukee

extended gregg musical universe is a joy to dip into, my favourite subproject is probably The Golding Institute

imago, Wednesday, 4 September 2019 23:45 (five years ago) link

albeit that isn't really music (although it is on Spotify)

imago, Wednesday, 4 September 2019 23:45 (five years ago) link

I thought that there were at least a couple threads devoted to things like the Golding Institute but this one seems like it is missing a bunch of things:

i still have season x and the 6th oscars special to go but i can't see how the trial and the 5th oscars special aren't the peak of the show. the trial of george lucas, 20th anniversary of the hbo movie the rat pack, mark almost dying, the mark RIP video having the same song as the electric sun 20 19 video, mark not dying, the jaws cake, and finally gregg's absolutely pointless theory that close encounters of the third kind is the real jaws 2

xp It’s the last episode where they have the VR equipment; there’s a segment that Gregg does at the VFA, and you get to move the camera around. It contains the best gag of the season.
