No Gregg?!

Οὖτις, Thursday, 12 September 2019 18:36 (five years ago) link

was talking w my wife about this last night and we agreed the only logical endpoint for On Cinema universe is for Gregg and Tim to murder each other

Οὖτις, Thursday, 12 September 2019 18:37 (five years ago) link

Or, alternately, to remain hopelessly intertwined for the rest of their natural lives. Which is, arguably, just a more protracted version of the scenario you posit.

lol yes

Οὖτις, Thursday, 12 September 2019 18:43 (five years ago) link

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 12 September 2019 20:37 (five years ago) link

lol at tim trying to name two films that were nominated this year: "rome" and "green bay playbook"

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 12 September 2019 20:43 (five years ago) link

green bay playbook made me lose it

Non stop chantar (crüt), Friday, 13 September 2019 00:24 (five years ago) link

ok yeah i take it back, the peak of this show is tim eating a raw cup o noodles

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 13 September 2019 03:44 (five years ago) link

speaking of Mark I can't believe I hadn't seen this yet, god this show is the best

frogbs, Friday, 13 September 2019 14:12 (five years ago) link

i really think mark is a genius

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 13 September 2019 14:16 (five years ago) link

the three stooges impersonations, the audition videos where he just reads the script verbatim including the locations and motivations, the two extremely traumatic near-death sequences in both the fifth and sixth oscar specials

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 13 September 2019 14:17 (five years ago) link

WC3P0 is his crowning achievement imo

Οὖτις, Friday, 13 September 2019 14:50 (five years ago) link

Mentioned in the T&E thread, but for those who didn't make the connection (as it took me way too long to do, myself), Mark was the pie-sitter on Better Call Saul.

WHAT

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 13 September 2019 14:59 (five years ago) link

it's certainly become clear just how much the office underused him

imago, Friday, 13 September 2019 15:04 (five years ago) link

not to mention he was K-Strass the Yo-Yo guy, which I still think is one of the funniest things to ever happen to local morning news

frogbs, Friday, 13 September 2019 15:11 (five years ago) link

K-Strass is one of my favorite things ever, complete genius. He had a big part in the What We Do In The Shadows TV series and was pretty funny

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 13 September 2019 17:00 (five years ago) link

lol now that i've finished this i don't know what to do with myself

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 13 September 2019 22:09 (five years ago) link

maybe force someone to rewatch the whole thing with me

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 13 September 2019 22:09 (five years ago) link

it's only three weeks to wait for the movie

now let's play big lunch take little lunch (sic), Friday, 13 September 2019 22:18 (five years ago) link

haha I've tried to make a few converts, not sure I've been at all successful. it's something of a hard sell when you tell people they have to start at the beginning and it's super-slow at first.

xp

Οὖτις, Friday, 13 September 2019 22:19 (five years ago) link

yeah i showed my gf, and before that my ex, the first few eps. both heidecker fans, not stoked on on cinema

Seany's too Dyche to mention (jim in vancouver), Friday, 13 September 2019 22:20 (five years ago) link

when you tell people they have to start at the beginning

stop telling them this! they can jump in later when the mythology and interlacing feuds have started to build up, and pick things up from context, and/or go back & fill in once they've got a feel for it.

now let's play big lunch take little lunch (sic), Friday, 13 September 2019 22:38 (five years ago) link

idk I initially started at season 10 and was like "wtf is this" I had to go back to the beginning

Οὖτις, Friday, 13 September 2019 22:40 (five years ago) link

I was super late to the game despite being a fan of both dudes. It seemed like too much of an investment back when I didn't know the magic I was denying myself.

My brother is also a big T+E head but I haven't sold him on On Cinema yet.

Welcome To My Lifemare (Old Lunch), Friday, 13 September 2019 22:43 (five years ago) link

He's even seen all of Decker without realizing all the texture and context he was missing.

Welcome To My Lifemare (Old Lunch), Friday, 13 September 2019 22:45 (five years ago) link

a good introductory episode of this is when tim vapes and says his thoughts are coming out of his nose

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 13 September 2019 22:54 (five years ago) link

idk I initially started at season 10 and was like "wtf is this" I had to go back to the beginning

yeah S10 is way too late, I mean before Decker. S3 or S4 have enough of the rivalry and side-characters established to get the feel for it, without the whole universe being so huge as to be completely confusing.

now let's play big lunch take little lunch (sic), Friday, 13 September 2019 23:22 (five years ago) link

this guy m/l knows what's up:

forks if you were starting at an early point, try dropping in on a S4 or 5 episode, when the Tim vs Gregg tone is better established & there’s loads of backstory, to see if it pings any better with you

you def wanna start 1-2 seasons before "Lucky Season 7" because I think that's where the show goes off the rails for good

frogbs, Saturday, 14 September 2019 04:10 (five years ago) link

and I mean that in the best possible way, of course

frogbs, Saturday, 14 September 2019 04:10 (five years ago) link

He's even seen all of Decker without realizing all the texture and context he was missing.

this was me for a couple years, I recently rewatched 'em all and they are so much better once you're familiar with On Cinema. it explains so much - why Kington is the "Master of Codes", why Tim is so zonked out during the Hawaii season, the whole "Gregg Turkington's Decker vs. Dracula" thing, and why the budget is so much higher from "Decker: Unclassified" on. like my main complaint about Decker was "there's a lot of weird random things going on" but it all makes sense if you watch On Cinema

frogbs, Wednesday, 18 September 2019 16:10 (five years ago) link

Even just those moments when Gregg clearly starts ad-libbing about one of his filmic obsessions and Tim loses his cool just before the scene is abruptly cut in the middle of a word. Or Gregg's reaction when Dr. San shows up.

"we're not doing that right now"

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 18 September 2019 16:35 (five years ago) link

i can't imagine the twist of port of call hawaii being nearly as hilarious without on cinema

"Your son is in hell Delgado! That was his choice!"

this got one of the biggest laughs from me out of the entire series

ha yeah, same here! loves how he loses it and smashes up the chair etc.

Season 11 next week

frogbs, Thursday, 19 September 2019 17:56 (five years ago) link

Fuck yesss... I finished season 10 today, and felt a pang of sadness, as if two of my best friends had died.
