stop telling them this! they can jump in later when the mythology and interlacing feuds have started to build up, and pick things up from context, and/or go back & fill in once they've got a feel for it.

idk I initially started at season 10 and was like "wtf is this" I had to go back to the beginning

I was super late to the game despite being a fan of both dudes. It seemed like too much of an investment back when I didn't know the magic I was denying myself.

My brother is also a big T+E head but I haven't sold him on On Cinema yet.

He's even seen all of Decker without realizing all the texture and context he was missing.

yeah S10 is way too late, I mean before Decker. S3 or S4 have enough of the rivalry and side-characters established to get the feel for it, without the whole universe being so huge as to be completely confusing.

forks if you were starting at an early point, try dropping in on a S4 or 5 episode, when the Tim vs Gregg tone is better established & there’s loads of backstory, to see if it pings any better with you

you def wanna start 1-2 seasons before "Lucky Season 7" because I think that's where the show goes off the rails for good

this was me for a couple years, I recently rewatched 'em all and they are so much better once you're familiar with On Cinema. it explains so much - why Kington is the "Master of Codes", why Tim is so zonked out during the Hawaii season, the whole "Gregg Turkington's Decker vs. Dracula" thing, and why the budget is so much higher from "Decker: Unclassified" on. like my main complaint about Decker was "there's a lot of weird random things going on" but it all makes sense if you watch On Cinema

Even just those moments when Gregg clearly starts ad-libbing about one of his filmic obsessions and Tim loses his cool just before the scene is abruptly cut in the middle of a word. Or Gregg's reaction when Dr. San shows up.

i can't imagine the twist of port of call hawaii being nearly as hilarious without on cinema

last year it was "Oscars so White", this year it's "Oscars so A through M"

this got one of the biggest laughs from me out of the entire series

ha yeah, same here! loves how he loses it and smashes up the chair etc.

I got several years behind and then stopped downloading them until the Dice one a few weeks ago but my perception was that Best Show Bests always had a much higher ratio of "other stuff" to "just Wurster" than Best Show Gems - and these are just from the current front page
