the multiple references there to slogans coined more than 70 years ago is definitely a healthy sign of a progressive nation well-equipped to deal with the challenges of the future

'street parties' is presumably a euphemism for getting glassed in a mass brawl outside a wetherspoons after nine hours of drinking on match day

hate how afternoon tea has been ruined by association, but I will still persist to take it

opden gnash (imago), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 15:03 (five years ago)

Can't stand tea myself but would fancy a special brew (in a bottle so I look less of a degenerate alcy).

calzino, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 15:06 (five years ago)

With a selection of sandwiches and cakes? Might even work

London Bridge is one ugly as fuck station, can't think of anything worth celebrating about it.

calzino, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 15:10 (five years ago)

or the bridge tbh

Think they mean the bridge itself, which is completely nondescript - weird not to go for Tower Bridge but I guess it doesn't have any nursery rhymes about it. I bet loads of parochial morons think Tower Bridge IS London Bridge tbh

the older Bridge Houses were built by 18th century bounders/cads who used them to live between two jurisdictions and avoid land tax which is at least more interesting than anything you could say about london bridge iirc

calzino, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 15:21 (five years ago)

staring out over the cemetery at Birkbeck, watching the tramline curve away into the gloom, Navyhead on the earphones - here I am, in Brexit Britain

opden gnash (imago), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 15:21 (five years ago)

i believe the pot of money for upkeep of london's bridges is the oldest financial trust in existence

mark s, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 15:30 (five years ago)

i read it on twitter so it must be true

a good thing to do is deliberately confusing real england with made-up cockney london

mark s, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 15:36 (five years ago)

the only real england is the made-up one

love Richard Scarry's cannibal pigs 4eva! And every knows smoking tobacco with a cob of corn pipe is probably safer than vaping!

re: make do and mend. I think it is probably a good thing that small tailoring/alteration businesses (that mostly disappeared in the 90's iirc) seem to be do doing well and making a comeback on the dying high streets in recent years.

Are “beetles” a separate offering from British music? Is that what we’ll be betting on instead of horses when Brexit stops horses crossing the Irish Sea?
