incredible show, but yeh the 2.0 version playing next after the incident is all time

Little details that made me laugh:

- Tim thinking Adam Driver had something to do with Fast and the Furious franchise, conflating with him with Paul Walker, who Tim declared several seasons ago should be renamed Paul Driver in honor of the series.

- The Heidecker Quartet actually being a trio, and frequently breaking. (I always wonder if these non-acting extras know the full extent of what will happen, or even what On Cinema is.)

I always assumed Axiom and Manuel were just paid lackeys but their "brotherhood" talk seems sincere at this point.

My girlfriend and I were so anxious during the calm at the table before people passed out, when it was all fairly mundane and sullen: we knew something horrible was bound to happen, especially with everyone gathered together, but no idea what. I was bracing myself for some sort of shooting incident, especially when LaRue entered and I thought the fake Mark might get unruly.

I want to watch this forever but simultaneously wonder how much more things can escalate, considering the body count the show has accumulated. In the long stretch before Axiom burst in, I actually thought this might be the series finale, and would have been satisfied.

Axiom & Manuel have true brotherhood - Axiom only comes to the studio due to Manuel’s entreaties, having spurned Tim, and saves Manuel first. (It’s up in the air whether Manuel believes most of what he’s saying or if he’s keeping good with Tim for next time he has money)

Fantastic. Great move. Well done (sic), Monday, 17 February 2020 18:05 (four years ago) link

Oh, another detail I loved: Tim taking the name of Toni's ex-husband, rather than her maiden name.

blatherskite, Monday, 17 February 2020 23:21 (four years ago) link

lol yes

the manuel and ax characters are used to portray the archetypal brotherhood/bro-dom exaggerated to absurdity. despite appearing as guitar center dwelling douchebags and being hired guns, manuel is still willling to give the skin off his ass for tim— and ax his hand! even through all the ups and downs of their relationships, they still say they'd be willing to do anything for tim, which is why i think ax eventually showed up at the end of the oscar special. at this point in their character development, they're that dumb kind of loyal like a dog. and they're some of my favorite characters because of it

IRL Tim claimed he really did meet those two guys at a Guitar Center, I wonder if that's true or not

Still haven't seen more than the first twenty minutes thanks to a variety of other distractions but I do want to point out that Tim appeared very close to breaking when Gregg was slowly pulling his car in and honking incessantly.

Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 18 February 2020 16:50 (four years ago) link

he certainly cracked up more this year, especially the first hour or so

nxd, Tuesday, 18 February 2020 16:53 (four years ago) link

I wouldn't be surprised if he did meet them at Guitar Center: IIRC, Axiom and Manuel are in a real band together (Last Second Chance), and that is their IRL look/style.

Finally watched the Oscar special. Goddamn it they keep topping themselves.

Ok bloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 24 February 2020 11:31 (four years ago) link

wondering what kind of scam Tim is trying to pull on Toni, making her sign the annulment quickly and then changing his last name for some reason

also is it implied that he slept with the pastor? the way he kept looking at her instead of Toni...yeeesh

something I just realized now (which I think was supposed to be obvious all along) is that the name of the character in the new Joker is Arthur, something which somehow goes unremarked upon the entire special

frogbs, Monday, 24 February 2020 14:45 (four years ago) link

Thought it was a nice touch that he called Ayaka the love of his life immediately before getting (re-)married to a different woman.

frogbs, Monday, 24 February 2020 14:56 (four years ago) link

I enjoyed that Gregg did like 20 seconds of actual interviewing and we learnt something about Russell Brand

imago, Monday, 24 February 2020 14:57 (four years ago) link

ok I replayed the annulment scene and Toni mentions something like 'oh we're gonna have to get a new pre-nup'

I *think* Joe suggested during the "debt forgiveness special" that they should close down HEI Inc and reopen under a new name
