Hahaha, hi Ken!

Oh, and as far as the thread topic is concerned, I get IA at the Californians in the "Mexicans mad at food" group I joined on FB who think their cuisine is superior in every way to the cuisine in Texas when Cal-Mex is just as inauthentic and potentially shitty as Tex-Mex, and their rabid support of a problematic fast food chain (In-n-Out) doesn't do them any favors, especially when the Texan equivalent (Whataburger) is a much better corporate citizen. I know it means nothing in the grand scope of thing, meaning it's irrational, but it still irks the shit out of me, so it fits within this thread's parameters.

took me until something like 4 years ago to find out why an aubergine was called an eggplant. The purple version doesn't really show it, plus its a long bulbous veg taht doesn't really appear egg shaped. BUt the Asian variety is white and round.

LIDL have just started selling a version that is that old aubergine shape but has white and purple streaks. can't recall the name.

Stevolende, Saturday, 1 August 2020 07:33 (four years ago) link

Grafitti is the name

Stevolende, Saturday, 1 August 2020 07:57 (four years ago) link

Borrowed from French aubergine, from Catalan albergínia, from Arabic اَلْبَاذِنْجَان‎ (al-bāḏinjān, “the eggplant”), from Persian بادنجان‎ (bâdenjân), from باتنجان‎ (bâtenjân), from Sanskrit वातिगगम (vātiga-gama, “eggplant”, literally “the plant that cures the wind”). Doublet of brinjal.

I was sending an email with "Cuisinart" in the subject. Just as it does here as I type this, "Cuisinart" gets a little squiggly red line under it indicating it is wrong or misspelled or somehow worthy of extra grammatical attention. But in the body of the email I was writing it for some reason *didn't* call attention to Cuisinart, gave it a pass. And yet, in the same email, I accidentally typed "slizing" instead of slicing, but it didn't underline "slizing." What the fuck is a slizing?

i realized constant loud opening and shutting of doors over and over drives me insane. not slamming of doors, but my roommate this morning has opened and shut a door audibly about 10 times in the last 5 minutes.

like why the hell don't you just leave the door open if you are going to keep going in and out of it rather than opening and shutting it each time? (it's not the bathroom!)

this is though also the roommate who has left unflushed turds sitting in the toilet 4 separate times....and this dude's my age!

btw I am moving in January and probably getting a place of my own again maybe a house.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 6 September 2020 19:25 (four years ago) link

two weeks pass...

people who ask me for help with shit (like my mother), then the moment I ask any follow-up questions, they're nowhere to be found for 30 minutes, so I can't move on until they reply, and my time winds up being monopolized.

going on 40 minutes trying to help my mother find her Federal EIN for her company that she somehow knew 3 months ago but doesn't know now, and it could have been done 35 minutes ago if she'd answered any of the questions I asked.

Tire pressure monitoring systems. Is there anything more useless in a vehicle? In theory, of course it would be great to be notified when the air in your tire gets low. In practice, in both cars we've owned with this feature, the light comes on whenever the temperature swings more than 20-30 degrees in 24 hours, particularly when it drops in the fall.

OMG, I have steered clear of these threads during my entire ILX lifetime but mine basically doesn't really work at all at this point, but definitely has that problem.

Is there anything more useless in a vehicle?

Yes. My friend has a car with an altimeter. Also, my car came with a low outdoor temperature alert, which I had to deactivate.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 8 October 2020 20:35 (four years ago) link

they have to be fitted by law in europe and the uk

"Since November 2014, all new passenger vehicles sold in the EU must be equipped with a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS)."

"In the UK on 1 January 2015, legislation came into force stating that for these vehicles, an inoperative or faulty TPMS sensor would result in an MOT failure."

koogs, Thursday, 8 October 2020 20:43 (four years ago) link

Mine has been fixed many times but never gets well.

She Thinks I Will Dare (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 8 October 2020 20:51 (four years ago) link

It makes tires way more expensive to replace. If the sensor is bad, they can just put a normal tire on and advise you to ignore it.

Fortunately, there is an extremely easy fix for the TPMS light being on: place a half-inch strip of electrical tape directly over the TPMS warning light. Voila! You won't see it ever again.

Note: this also works for the "check engine" light, but it is not recommended.

we're ommaway to nowhere (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 8 October 2020 21:11 (four years ago) link

lol

My frustration is that, given the ever fluctuating temps over the course of a Midwestern fall and winter, mine is just constantly on no matter how diligent I am about keeping the tires inflated.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 8 October 2020 21:18 (four years ago) link

they aren't reliable for that cold air reason, but i'd never cover it up or ignore it because i've been saved twice by it from being on the side of a highway with a flat. then i get paranoid if it goes on from cold thinking that i'll be wrong in my assumption about the cause. can't live with em can't live without em i guess

superdeep borehole (harbl), Thursday, 8 October 2020 21:22 (four years ago) link

When it gets cold, tire pressure will go down.

Generally when tire pressure is low enough to be a problem, one can detect that with these things called "eyes." Or by using a normal tire guage.

Fair point, harbl.

we're ommaway to nowhere (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 8 October 2020 21:37 (four years ago) link

Mine has two tiers of lights. One that sort of tells you that something is wrong in general with the balance that is always on and then another one that switches on for a particular tire when the weather changes or when the tire is really flat. And yeah, whenever I have to have it changed it is expensive and takes a long time since I take it to the dealership and they have to send it over to the other dealership or whoever it is the actually still fixes it.
