She cries to her own songs too, tbh

And to other people’s songs too!

C. Grisso/McCain is super knowledgeable.

Missed this before. Thanks! High praise coming from you, who knows a thing or a thousand!

Couldn’t think of nicer, smarter, funnier, better read, more discerning people than you lot to spend end times with.

Sorry, meant that for one of the second thought threads but there were too many to pick one.

Erdős-szám 69 (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 2 October 2020 18:41 (four years ago) link

Pom has gone from being mysterious to annoying to amusing to a solid fave.

seumas milm (gyac), Friday, 2 October 2020 18:44 (four years ago) link

I was gonna fp pom for incessantly saying “new board description” about any old shite but then he copped to it so I didn’t

Gab B. Nebsit (wins), Friday, 2 October 2020 18:45 (four years ago) link

Not a bad idea, keeps him from getting too much of a big head about it.

Also, I miss poster ogmor.

seumas milm (gyac), Friday, 2 October 2020 18:46 (four years ago) link

Right back atcha, gyac.

We really do need a new board description, though. Do you disagree, wins?!?!?!

pomenitul, Friday, 2 October 2020 18:47 (four years ago) link

Meant to say moderately amusing btw.

seumas milm (gyac), Friday, 2 October 2020 18:49 (four years ago) link

I basically only use zing now so never see the board descriptions

Gab B. Nebsit (wins), Friday, 2 October 2020 18:50 (four years ago) link

Ah, that explains it.

pomenitul, Friday, 2 October 2020 18:51 (four years ago) link

ditto with Flagging, but i do think of them fondly. wish the old ones were collected someplace but, all things must pass.

Keeping in the spirit of this thread, I must say it doesn't get much better on ILM than when Lily and Josh In Chicago get rolling on a Springsteen thread.

Can I just say that this thread occasionally unsettles me on account of its implicit favouritism? This is totally on me, of course, but as a lame corrective I’d like to send out a <3 to all ILXors, past and present.

Josefa has an incredibly detailed knowledge of and sensibility regarding old television culture and the old weird NYC restaurants, among other things.

Thank you, I appreciate having an audience who cares about such material

Josefa, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 22:59 (four years ago) link

Feels particularly germane atm to say that ILX is home to an exceptional group of people. I value this space and pretty much all y'all more than I can say. And perhaps I need to say it more often and with more specificity, because you just never know, do you.

OrificeMax (Old Lunch), Thursday, 22 October 2020 03:11 (four years ago) link

I was going to search for this thread just so that I could post something similar, but you beat me to it. Jerk.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 22 October 2020 03:22 (four years ago) link

for sure. <3 old lunch, and all of you, really. we are just people talking to each other

president of my cat (Karl Malone), Thursday, 22 October 2020 04:37 (four years ago) link

When in a conversation irl I refer to ILX, it is so weird and hard to sum up this place in a short way that captures the outsize impact this place has had on me. "Message board where I learn about everything" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

He was very mean to Mr. Chamillionaire (PBKR), Thursday, 22 October 2020 12:26 (four years ago) link

I tried to find a way to tell my wife that someone I knew, but only in a way, passed away, and it was tougher (in every sense) to convey than I expected. How do you describe ILX? How in the world do you describe Dr. Morbius to someone who has no idea who or what you are taking about?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 22 October 2020 12:45 (four years ago) link

Yeah, i think I learned to be an adult here.

Tough lessons sometimes, but this is probably the closest thing I have to a church fellowship.

rb (soda), Thursday, 22 October 2020 13:04 (four years ago) link

i was going to say, message board isnt really all this is any more. a digital village?

cointelamateur (m bison), Thursday, 22 October 2020 13:10 (four years ago) link

I try to think of ways to describe it or talk about people on it that aren’t defensive-sounding but it’s hard. Then I want to backtrack and to add things like “but I met him several times in real life and used to run into him quite a bit in the city! One of his best friends lives a few blocks from me! She used to date one of my best friends when they were in college, he was in my wedding party. As was my other friend who is a DJ at the station where she is also a DJ, where he was well-known as a volunteer! It’s all connected do you see?” So even more defensive. I have some formulations that I tell myself at least, but I can’t type them into the chat box right now.

Here Comes a Slightly Irregular (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 22 October 2020 13:26 (four years ago) link

thanks to Covid I essentially have no friends right now so yes this community is kind of important to me

frogbs, Thursday, 22 October 2020 13:34 (four years ago) link

definitely didn't see myself posting on and off for 15 years here. closest experience I had was a web magazine I used to write music reviews for between 2000 - 2005. That board, we are all mostly still in contact, but it's not like it is here - the messages are infrequent, and we no longer have a board where we all post to. it's kind of scattered on FB, and some of us have met in real life but not many.

admittedly around 2016 I was frustrated here and only sticking around to read the politics thread until Trump was vanquished so I could skedaddle away, and after that didn't happen, I stuck around to be assuaged, since everybody I knew IRL was utterly freaking out in ways that weren't helpful to me, that I wasn't able to parse.

was only after that where I managed to actually properly connect with people here for the first time due to my hair-trigger anger issues that often make message boards difficult. i'm glad for that as right now, I need a board like this for more cogent, even-handed takes where my friends, great people as they are, tend to be too stressed out to help me parse a lot of what's going on in calm, reasoned tones.

I realize the board began as a community as many of the original posters knew each other IRL, but even as the board moved on from those days and the community tended to be more people who didn't know each other IRL, it was pretty apparent that everybody here gives a shit about each other's offline lives, and (for teh most part) engages with each other as human beings rather than just sentient display names.

have definitely learned a lot here - hell, my earliest posts in 2004 barely appear to be English, and filled with ellipses. a large part of my vocabulary and improved writing style came from absorbing the things I learned and read here.

have definitely needed this place during the pandemic. am grateful for it.

Neanderthal, Thursday, 22 October 2020 13:38 (four years ago) link

I certainly can't speak for Morbz, but I know that for me, knowing that so many of you were rooting for me when I was going through cancer treatments was really touching. Somehow, this place has taught me some essential lessons about what it is to be human, and I'm really grateful for all of you, even if I am sometimes a crabby leftist jerk.
